Hey, H: Thanks for the generous reaction to JADE, you're one of the first to read it I think. I'm glad the ending wasn't too hokey for you--years ago I had that ending image of a quasimodo even before Jade came to mind. I have plans for it and all the Cal Wild stuff--so JADE will live again in the future, I hope. Btw, I know you have some interest in basketball--something I played in college and occasionally write about, including in the upcoming DEATHFLASH. Thanks again, my friend, Gene
John: I appreciate your support of my work--of course you are my number one fan. Glad you liked JADE--you didn't mention anything about Walter in the story. Ha. I've made that *dig* up THE HUNGRY SKULL, which you will enjoy more, I'm sure. Thanks for reading and appreciating my stuff, Gene

I did catch "Walter the gravediggers son", Gene. And it did cross my mine as to whether or not you used the name with me in mind. To have your name mentioned in a story, and on top of that, a Cal Wild story, if definitely the coolest thing.
So I'm assuming that I can repeat this as a correct assumption.
"Ghosts, Spirits, Computers and World Machines" was processed, so I should be seeing it soon. It seems this has been released as a limited hard cover first.
John: Correct. And Uncle Walter is back in THE HUNGRY SKULL (Gord thinks it's my best Cal Wild long piece). The character plays a significant role in the development of the perky narrator, Spark. This is into the future of Cal Wild, some time after THE GREAT NORTHERN SWEET WATER RAID. Yes, GHOST, SPIRITS, COMPUTERS & WORLD MACHINES appeared first in hard back from Steve Savile's short-lived imprint in Sweden, Imaginary Worlds. Not many copies as I recall, and way too many typos. Later Prime Books brought it out in a trade paperback with a nifty wrap-around cover. Some of my early favorite work in it. Gene

Just finished "Awaken, Dragon" Good story. I really did enjoy it, but did I miss something at the end? Ken uses the dragon against his boss, then is picked up in the morning. He decides they're not going to hold him and uses the dragon again. The dragon is only for evil, so I'm guessing he was right about his boss or he would of went to the land of the pale sun. Then he uses it the final time while confined. If he use it against the police how did he plan on getting out of his confinement?
He didn't; but he wasn't going to stay in that cell was he? One of my favorite stories--I've actually been in the White Horse Bar in the Wan Chai, many years ago on R n R.
John: Yes, quite a few small changes, terminology, etc. from the short story to the novel.
A quetzal is a big bird in Costa Rica, exceptionally colorful (so a white one is an aberration). Kay and I hiked the Monteverde Cloud Forest, quetzal country, but never saw one, although we heard a bong bird, which sounds like a deep mission bell. Also quetzalcoatl is the famed snake/bird god of the Aztecs. And finally quetzals are what you spend in Honduras. Anyhow, the important point in the story are aberrations. Hope you like it.
John: Usually my stories are the result of several things simmering. But this one started when my in-laws came back from a long trip to Africa (they are both from North Dakota). My story contains some reversals of common stereotypes of Africa. The car bit is just an exaggeration of the love affair we have with cars in this country. Let's see... That's all I can remember about it. Written a long time ago by some other writer. Although I like this one a lot. Gene
John: Apparently a number of readers liked "Undercover." It appeared in Science Fiction Age--a well-paying, first class production (I eventually placed 4 or 5 stories there). They used to have a top ten list of favorites at years end. "Undercover" made the list the first year of publication, and there was some good fiction in every issue that year. Gene
John: glad you liked "Shadow of the Mountain." The place in the story, Mt. George, appears again in an upcoming story. "Sacred Mountain" will be published in a forthcoming anthology, stories all dealing with lightning. Btw, the marine boot camp stuff was as accurate as my memory of it. Gene
I've just signed and returned the tip sheets for my two story chapbook, FIONA & GRAMS. It will be put up for pre-order by Sideshow Press in the next few weeks. Fans of "The legend of Sleepy Hallow" might enjoy the first story which takes place at the same time, same background. The other story is kind of a funny dark mystery--if that's really possible. Both stories had been accepted by other venues before we decided to do them together, so I think with some confidence that they are both good reads. Gene
BMB is preparing "Nostalgia" as the bonus story for the lettered edition of DOC GOOD'S TRAVELING SHOW. The story is a Cal Wild tale, but takes place exclusively inside San Fran Shield. It is a kind of bridge story between THE GREAT NORTHERN SWEET WATER RAID and the more futuristic tales that will appear in a Sideshow press chapbook after the first of the year. But I've also planned a pretty cool add-in for all the lettered buyers. My idea requires a little bio info on the buyer. So, if you're interested in another good Cal Wild tale and getting your name included in the text in an interesting, maybe unique, way, watch for the upcoming pre-order period. I think everyone will be pleased--and after all DOC GOOD'S TRAVELING SHOW was itself a Stoker finalist in long fiction. Thanks for your continuing support, Gene
BMB is having a 30% off sale for the next three weeks. The discount applies to a number of my books including SHADOW OF THE DARK ANGEL (only 2 left), DOC GOOD'S TRAVELING SHOW, and JADE. If you don't have a copy of any of these plus any of the other good titles, get over to BMB pronto. Thanks for the support, Gene
Another review of JADE at Bookgasm. I'll try to get an update of upcoming release dates on books and future projects soon. Thanks for the support, Gene
Thanks John and Tony for your support and positive reactions. I thought I would update what I have coming out, when(approximately), and a word or two about what I'm working on. Coming up: Out from BMB is JADE, another Cal Wild novella. Up for pre-order from Sideshow Press a chapbook with two stories: FIONA & GRAMS. Out 9-11 will be a novel from BMB, DEATHFLASH. Out soon the lettered from BMB of DOC GOOD'S TRAVELING SHOW. Out soon thereafter the three boxed lettered set of SHADOW, DOUBLE JACK & DEATHFLASH from BMB. Out around the first of the year the lettered for JADE from BMB. Out just after the first of the year a tpb of DOUBLE JACK by SSP, followed by a Cal Wild chapbook from SSP, CHRONICLES OF THE DOUBLE SPARROW. Out first quarter of 2011, a collection from BMB, DANCE OF THE BLUE LADY & Other Stories. Shortly after that a limited edition novel from BMB, NOT FADE AWAY. Around the end of 2011/beginning 2012 BMB will be bringing out in limited HB the CAL WILD Series, which will include THE BURDEN OF INDIGO, a prequel, THE CONFESSIONS OF ST. ZACH, and a sequel, CAL WILD-- all the stories, novelettes, and novellas in chronological order and linked with short narratives. I'm working on THE CONFESSIONS OF ST. ZACH (half done) which will lead in nicely, I think, to CAL WILD. Oh, I still have four or five short stories coming out the end of this year and first of next. Future plans: *Maybe* working on a pair of novellas, collaborating with two excellent writers after the first of the year--we'll see. So it goes, Gene
