This is my first intro to James A. Moore: this guy can spin a good story.
I'm nearing the middle and his little grey demons with red eyes are freaking me out. But the thing I love most about this book so far is the revenge factor in it: I love revenge plots in horror novels.
I was wondering what everyone's favorite revenge novel is on here? I know you guys will list some good titles maybe I haven't read.
I can say this will not be the last book I buy written by James Moore.

Under The Over Tree was my introduction to Moore and it made me a fan for life. One hell of a book. Some horror books have an atmosphere that is so depressing throughout the story it makes the actual horror scenes much more gut wrenching, this was one of those books for me.
As far as revenge goes, try Tom Picirilli's Headstone City and his new one The Cold Spot. But for the best revenge story I've ever read, one that was so brutal and so disgusting it stayed with me for awhile was Tom Picirilli's "F-cking Lie Down Already". Talk about reading a book with a grimmace on your face.....

Thanks, johng, I read Red last month: unbelievable novel, made me admire Ketchum even more.
TT, thanks, I have November Mourns and A Lower Deep on the way; Piccirilli is an author I can no longer put off getting into. I've seen so many killer reviews on his books. If I don't read the guy's stuff right now, I'll start having nightmares about his books attacking me.
James A. Moore's entire list of books will be stapled to my brain as soon as I can buy the rest of them. Under The Overtree is turining out to be a book that will be on my favorite list of horror novels, ever.
I don't care what anyone says: when you blend good horror with characters that are rat bastards getting their payback, it makes for one hell of a read. Reading James Moore for the first time considering this came out in 2002, makes me want to kick myself in the ass for not reading him earlier.

F. Paul Wilson's written quite a few revenge themed short stories. His story in the Dark Delicacies antho is one, and you can find others in his collections Soft and Others, and The Barrens and Others.
A couple of anthologies with several revenge themed stories are Stalkers and Robert Bloch's Psychos.
I haven't read it yet, but I think The Nightrunners by Joe R. lansdale may be a revenge story. I think it also goes under the title, The God of the Razor.

Craig, I have Mr. Hands on the way to me in the mail; if I get it before I finish the new Ketchum I'll read it before Coffin County. From what I've heard and read about Braunbeck, you can't go wrong with anything the guy writes.
The new Ketchum I'm liking and it reminds me of a couple old girlfriends.

James, I know I read through the Serenity Falls trilogy in a few days...same as Blood Red. I eagerly look forward to your novella with Chris Golden. Any other books or characters to be revisited in the near future?
I do remember reading a story about a hit man who encounted a rather strange creature in his line of work that I thought was written by you. Could this be Dear Diary?

Hey, James, between Under The Overtree and the new Ketchum, I'm losing sleep, but it's worth it.
I can sympathize with tt: I try to limit myself to only a certain amount of books a month and then all hell breaks loose in my brain because of great writers like you, and before you know it, I have to decide whether to eat or read.
Oh well, if I die of starvation at least it will be with a killer horror novel in my hands.

Thad was kind enough to remind me that I had wrote and mentioned Dear Diary "over there" and he sent me a copy of the story. I took a trip and couldn't find my post on it but I did find my post on Blood Red. So at the risk of being accused of simply taking up more space here I will post my review of Blood Red below:
If you read the Afterward to James A. Moore’s ‘Blood Red’ you see the following: <<<If you’d asked me even eighteen months ago if I had any desire to write a vampire novel, the answer would have been a resounding “HELL NO!”. It’s not that I have anything against vampires, per se, its just that damn…people…they’ve been done a few times!>>>
He goes to say that others, including himself (his first novel) have written vampire stories in the past and have done a pretty good job of it. He goes on to name check some great writers. Why did he do it then? Because a publisher asked him to and he got to thinking about it... and he wondered how he could do it differently.
I can’t say that Moore’s “Blood Red’ is a different kind of vampire story, it has all the basic elements of the original lore, but he’s added to it and most importantly, he’s made us care about the story. Moore’s writing is terrific. The cast of characters is long and most importantly they are entertaining.
Jason Soulis (get it?) comes to a New England coastal town to set up shop. He is a vampire, but not your average vampire, he considers himself one of the ‘Undead’. An ‘undead’ vampire is smart, can tolerate daylight, and can have have lots of normal human type sex.
Jason needs to experiment though, he wants to make different types of vampires because most of the ones he’s made in the past have a problem; they don't like sunlight, they need to feed all the time, they are usually moron’s, and don’t live past a couple of days.
He’s a pretty responsible vampire though for someone so evil, he knows that too much too soon is a bad thing so he takes his time with his experiments trying to keep the moron vampire count down.
One thing he can do easily is make another person ‘undead’... which only takes a combination of time and lots and lots of sex. Since he’s not a homosexual, he picks out a really hot looking, heart of gold prostitute, and then thats when the fun begins.
The prostitute gets to do a lot of neat things like seduce three different "men of the cloth", have lots of mind blowing sex with Soulis, fall in love with a nerdy school buddy, and eventually kill lots of sorority boys. And in the process of being "undead she also gets to fly, acquire superhuman strength, and take some pretty good revenge on her pimp.
There are a couple of detectives that are right out of an X rated version of Dragnet who are hilarious and soon start to put things together in a Laymon sort of way. In fact, the dialog between these two will bring Laymon’s style of conversation to mind immeadiately. An homage to Stake and Traveling Vampire Show perhaps? Both those novels are mentioned in the Afterword.
Moore does a great job of getting us to know the characters before the action starts and we start to bond with these people before they meet their fates. And though we may think we know what Moore has in mind for these guys, there are many surprises along the way.
There is tons of murder, mayhem, and blood in this novel. There is also a lot of humor. If you can squint your eyes to read the fine font, you are in for a hell of a good ride.
They came out of the fog in droves, some of them wearing the black costumes and some of them wearing the remians of whatever they'd died in. All of them stank of stagnant salt water and darker things, and they were hungry. The worst of it for the baby sitters was being recognized by some of the frat boys. They got creative with where they bit and how long they could make the suffering last.
The children died quickly for the most part.
Jason Soulis watched it all, standing on the top of his roof as the attack took place. he willed the winds to gather stronger and summoned the fog to go further inland, and the elements obeyed.
The night was only just starting and he wanted to savor all of it.
One of the children ran away and he let him. The boy cowered against the side of the house and cried soft muic into Jason's ear.
He loved to hear children cry.

When she aimed, she pushed the barrel into Avery' side and then pulled the trigger.
Avery Tripp was cut clean in half by the shell. Jayce was knocked off of her feet and landed on her ass a couple of yards from where she'd started. None of the Westerns her father liked to watch showed how much kick a 12-gauge delivers and she was completely unprepared.
The upper half of Avery growled and crawled in her direction while she sat on the ground and did a mental repeat of the action to seee where she had gone wrong. He was dragging a heavy collection of organs with him as he went, and Danny stomped on what he thought was a lung as he tried to stop the rabid little fucker from reaching his destination. It was the sound of dead meat popping under his shoe that snapped Jayce out of her daze.

Maggie was feeling a little tender when she got back to her apartment. The Baptist minister apparently liked his women submissive and he liked to fuck like a bunny on Spanish fly. Maggie visited him right after the Presbyterian. She was almost done with the list. Part of her was happy about that, because it was a lot of work with men who apparently weren't getting any regulary. She was also a little saddened because she was having a good time with the whole lot of them.
