Create the greatest 'Horror Anthology' ever

I won't be of much help here, I don't read very many short story books and I pass them along when I do. I just don't normally remember them for any lengths of time.

There was one though that I remember vaguely that made an impression on me. Tom Picirrilli told me the name of it but I forgot it already. It was a Ketchum story I think about a woman who was trapped in a basement by her rich husband. When her husband died something like 20 years later, her son took over.

Sorry I can't help you more than that, but I would be interested to see what others write, it might help jog my memory.

Damn, good choice Laurel. I forgot about that one. And the one where they invent something that can transport people, but you have to knocked out for it to work...or else! That was great too.

1.Just Waiting by Ramsey Campbell - This one is a very bizarre tale about these tree-men serving a family a feast in the forest.

2.A Warning to the Curious by M.R. James - A ghostly guardian starts stalking a man who removed an artifact buried to protect England from invaders.

3. The Calamander Box by Joesph Payne Brennan - An empty chest bought for very cheap starts having a ghostly finger appear out of its edge which begins scratching at the lock.

4.Thurnley Abbey by Perceval Landon - The owners of a haunted room in a castle try secretly put up their traveling friend in that room because he claimed that if he ever saw a ghost, he would ask it why it was there.

5.Off The Map by Rex Dolphin - From the old Weird Tales magazine, a traveler finds a small town in England, not on any map, which has a bad curse upon it.

6.The Whistling Room by William Hope Hodgson - The great paranormal investigator Carnacki the Ghost Finder investigates a haunted castle room in Ireland which has a most bizarre form of entity inside it.

7.The People of the Pit by A. Meritt - Travelers in the antartic come across a carwling man who tells the tale of having escaped a pit in a mountain that went downwards on carved stairs for days, and which is inhabited by strange lifeforms that took him captive until he escaped. It has a hollow earth type feel to it.

8.The Music of Erich Zann by H.P. Lovecraft - The mysterious music of an old man seems to summon a great evil.

9.The Ocean Ogre by Dana Carroll - Another Weird Tales story. This one is about a strange man brought aboard a ship who they start to realize isn't human or friendly.

10.Catapillars by E.F. Benson - A man sees thousands of strange catapillar-type things stacked up like a piramid atop a bed where a man died of cancer. When the things notice him they start to advance on him.

What was that Bently Little story about the woman who worshiped Jimmy Dean? That was a great story!

I think I should pick up The Collection again.
