Tentacles!!! *steals the critter*
That's the coolest emote I've seen in quite a while.
Thanks for the boards
About the novel...lets see, where to start. Ah the title!
The title is Apparitions and it's due to be released in April/May of 2007 by ArcheBooks. It actually started off as a straight suspense novel and well, since I tend to taint everything I get my paws on it twisted into a mutant version of horror/suspense.
I'm very much a character based writer. So I'll show the gist of the novel via what the main characters are:
In Apparitions the supernatural meets modern reality in the tourist town of White Sands, Michigan. Bailey Khane is a renowned author visited by ghostly guests; murder victims seeking the peace of the grave. Unbeknownst to her, they were all slain by the same man. Caught between the growing shadow of his knife and the unholy fury of the dead he has left in his wake, she is forced to call upon obscure knowledge of the occult, superstition and myth to survive.
…will she succeed?
When Andy Bennett searches for the answers to his sister’s murder he is drawn into a web of horror and shambling corpses. With Bailey high on his list of suspects
Will he draw her from their clutches and risk becoming their prey?
Sheriff Jay Carson and Deputy Raines fight to form a line between their citizens and the creatures that crave to destroy them.
Will they fall and leave their town defenceless in the face of death?
Let me know what you guys think and I'll answer any questions.
Thanks for visiting!

Thanks Matt, to both
I've been lurking here for a while and to finally be able to be active is exciting!
My Dark Fantasy novel, Night Wing was handed to my publisher just last Thursday too. So fingers crossed, prayers, chants...you name it would be appreciated.

Waaaay back in the day I used to play D&D. My brother and I were part of the 'Pale Kids' that sat around a table tossing dice and having a blast while other kids were out playing basket ball.
Now I play Baldur's Gate (it's old but I still love playing it), Icewind Dale and Age of Wonders. I played Neverwinters Night for a bit but unfortunately the dial up connection and old copper lines out here kept getting laggy.
I haven't played D&D or any other PnP RPs for many years. Mostly due to working on our own RPG system in the world of Farath (which is where Night Wing takes place). We RP there and test out new critters, magic, races and such. It takes a lot of time and effort but it's a lot of fun too.
Do you play RPGs?

Yes. I used to play D&D and the Marvel Super Heroes game but our group sort of fell apart. Now I have a new group, and we play various incarnations of GURPS. I'm running a modern horror game that I wrote presently. When mine finishes, someone else will run a game that they wrote, so on and so forth. I have never played any of the online games. I prefer the PnP games myself as they generally seem to be much more story oriented. I actually enjoy solving the mysteries and the whole story aspect alot more than the fighting.

Eeeeeeh those things...I swear it's easier and faster to write and edit an entire chapter than it is to write a one page cover/query letter.
I can offer some advice gleaned from other authors and countless crumples of paper I've fed into the maw of my wood stove.
Short, snappy and use your voice. Voice, voice, voice. It sounds like it wouldn't be necessary in a 'business' letter but it is.
Also, even though you're emailing it - print out a copy and edit it in hard copy. It's amazing what errors you find on paper that manage to elude you on the computer screen.
If I can be of any help, let me know.

Thanks for the advice. I'm not sure I completely understand what you mean by using my "voice' though. I'm having the most trouble trying to describe my story in just a couple of sentences. Do I tell them what is ultimately revealed at the end of the story in the cover letter, or keep it vague. I sort of feel like the story will be weakened if I tell them the ending before they read the whole thing. It's only 3,477 words long, but I know that they get alot of submissions. How do you feel in regards to something like that?

By voice I mean your way of saying things. That tone that makes you a different story teller than anyone else.
From what I've read most editors like it when writers cut through the chase and tell them straight up what the story is and how it ends. Looking at it from their view I can see why. They get so many submissions that shifting through them all is time consuming. If they know up front how things are supposed to flow in your story they'll be able to not only quickly figure out if your story is what they seek or not but also be able to see how well you carried through in the actual story.
So if it were me I'd give them what they want and make their lives easier. I'm sure they'd appreciate it and remember.

BTW, if you aren't already, you should try out Mark Justice and David T. Wilbanks podcast, Pod of Horror. It's great, they interview lots of horror writers (recently they interviewed my favorite writer, Ramsey Campbell), have a contest where you have to guess what novel the last line they read belongs to, read short fiction, and much more. It's alot of fun and informative as well. They have a forum here under Justice and Wilbanks.
Also as far as RPG stuff goes there's a great podcast called Fear the Boot that you might like. They are easy to find on I-Tunes, if your interested.
Thanks for the help, I appreiciate it.
The Fear the Boot podcast is doing a series on game creation at the momment. If you hear the one (40) where they mention a listener named horrorfan, that's me. I like some of their earlier shows better when they weren't focusing on game creation, but that's because I'm never going to create a game. It sounds like you may be in the process of doing that now.

Thanks!
That's about where we're at now. We've got creatures, spells, stats, maps, cities, cultures, races etc. all either on paper or hashed out through RP and just waiting to be written out.
Our magic system is solid all we need now is the 'math' of it. Same with combat.
Hashy is working on re-vamping the web site. Once it's done I'll post here letting everyone know it's complete. If you look under Current Projects we'll have a brief summary of the Farath project. But it's not up yet. We hope to have it done by tonight or tomorrow.

Sounds good, I'd like to read more about it.
I think the Fear the Boot episode that delt with the math part was #28, if your interested. The game they are creating is a post nuclear type thing, as I recall. I think that the creature and magic item creation would be the most fun. I used to want to submit some of my adventures to Dungeon magazine, but they only allowed (at that time, at least) you to introduce like two new monsters or items per submission, and mine were always way over that amount.
Anyway, good luck with the project, it sounds like fun.
P.S.- Thanks for the advice on the cover letter. It really is helping alot. I'm having an easier time writing it the way you sugested.
I finished my cover letter and E-mailed my story to Flesh and Blood magazine last night, and quickly recieved an E-mail back saying that they were suspending publication. There was nothing posted on there website saying that that was the case however. So I guess I will have to revamp my cover letter and send it out to someone else. Thanks for the follow up though.

Hope your story fares well.
And the introduction; this being my first post on these boards.
I'm one of Raven's minions (and fellow author and RP fanatic), learning the tricks of the trade from her while helping her out with her novels and stories... doing pretty much whatever she needs done.
Raven, I was wondering if you could help me with something here? If you are trying to submit a story to a company, who do you address the cover letter of your E-mail to, if they list multipule fiction editors? Do you list the Editor and Chief, the first name on the list, everyone on the list or just a generic to whom it may concern?
I don't want to upset anyone by addressing the wrong person.

Wise decision.
First, are there any job titles listed after the fiction editor's names? Sometimes they'll have one for Fantasy, one for Horror etc. If they do, send it addressed to the editor whose title is most fitting.
Second, if you have Writer's Market check their listing there. Often they'll put in info on who to address certain stories to. If you don't have WD, list the press here and I'll check on it for you.
If that doesn't work, check their web site and see if the info is posted there.
If there is a phone number listed you could call and ask the receptionist which editor handles your sort of story and address it accordingly.
If none of those work then I'd say send it to the Editor and Chief. But first try to make every effort to figure out which one under him/her is the proper one to send it to.

The place I was looking at is a webzine, . They list four fiction editors (but don't specify a particular type), one of them (the first guy on the list) is the Editor in Chief. There is no listing for them in the most recent Writers Market (thanks for offering to look it up for me though). I found no phone number for them, so it sounds like going with the Editor in Chief may be the way to go.
