I used to go out every Saturday night.

There was always the bitter anticipation, the careful application of mascara and what the hell am I going to wear. Then it was off on the merry-go-round, this pub, that pub and the one around the corner, drinking Heinekin and Stella and chatting up guys who weren't the least bit interested while trying to fight off those who were but whom I didn't like. Total, heartbreaking madness.

Nightclubs after the pubs closed. One was in a rough neighborhood and had guys who knew how to handle themselves on the door. Another was more upmarket but more people kicked off in that one; angry young guys outside with blood streaming down their faces. Broken glass on the floor.

Walking home at 2 a.m. up a steep gradient in the freezing cold; two and a half miles in 5 inch heels, out of town and into the countryside. Cows hunkered down over the other side of the wall in the dark, scaring the living shit out of me when they let out a sigh or moved around.

The very best of nights meant piling into a car and going to a club on the outskirts of another town. Very hip if you liked Roxy/Bowie/Punk. Great times, good music, didn't get home till 3 a.m. I wore a mix of glam/punk clothing and thought I was real swell.

Rare trips into the big city, where on a sartorial and pop culture level, it was a whole new ballgame. Exciting, but way too expensive, and the guys were always weird.

Sometimes I'd come home just after midnight and my brother had just arrived home, too, and we'd both be drunk as mops and we'd sit and watch Christopher Lee Dracula films and try not to wake our parents.

Wow, and all Ethan and I did tonight was take a carload of recyclables to the large bin at Emma's school.

I know, right? I didn't even get out of the house.

Until about 8 years ago we went out every saturday night with our hard core group of friends, and we always got drunk. We decided that it was too much; that we were drinking way too heavily and we stopped going out to the pubs and taverns with them. We rarely go out on Saturday's now, mostly to eat dinner now when we do, and I almost never order a drink. I can't afford to lose my license either.

Saturday night is tantric sex night in my household. My wife and I shuffle the kids off to bed at 6PM then engage in 4-6 hours of mutual physical stimulation ending in half hour long climaxes.

Ok ok, the kids stay up late. Hockey Night in Canada until 9PM then a family movie.

All I do on a Saturday night nowadays is sit in a corner of the house and think up names for werewolves. (And wonder if the reason I write horror is because of those damned cows.)

I need to stumble around in here more often.
Saturday nights for us is usually zombie killing night. A pint, L4D2 and my hubby. It's total bliss for me.
