Thanks
This is all so exciting! As I see my publisher's production schedule moving closer...and closer to release...I'm stuck between being totally giddy and terrified...wanting to celebrate and wanting to vomit...
Odd...

We're going to be recording the reading here and sending it over to Greg by April 2nd. (I'm so not sending anything important on April 1st...call me supersticious...)
He's supposed to be getting back with me on the day and time that we'll do the interview. That should be sometime early in April.
I'm excited. He seems like such an interesting guy that the interview is probably going to be a ton of fun!

Apparitions will be going into editing as soon as Star Commandos 04 (or another title) is released. Once a title 'goes red' he said it's then about 60 days from release.
If I had to guess, I'd say late May or early June unless things somehow speed up.

It depends on the publishing company. A lot of them don't. The writer is pretty much given a date and then left in the dark until the publisher contacts them with the edits they want done or the galleys.
That would drive me insane - I'm so not one for waiting
What topics about publishing would you want to see? I'll put up some threads on them.

Yup!
One of my characters in Windigo is a wildlife biologist. So I have to brush up on my wildlife knowledge.
Her career actually changed like...oh...3 time
At first I created her as a writer...then found out through plotting that she really didn't have a role in the novel if she was a writer...
So I changed her to a DNR Officer only to do a few interviews with real officers and found out that what I had thought the field was like really wasn't what I wanted from her.
So, after an interview with a wildlife biologist I'm finally set on what my main female will be.

First I make sure I have a list of questions ready. Some of them will want to do the interview right then over the phone - so be prepared just in case!
Try to call because it's more personal than an email but either would work. Introduce yourself as a local author working on a book. Then tell them what information you're seeking for your novel and if they'd be willing to do an interview with you. Be upfront and honest with them with what you're looking for.
When I query professionals for interviews because one of my characters will be say, a DNR officer, I make that clear - "I'd like to know what it's really like out there so I can portray them correctly."
If I'm asking for an interview to get facts I make that clear too. "I'd like to know how you do <insert variable stuff here> so that I can portray the process realistically."
Usually you'll get a positive response and they'll accept an interview. Make a time and place convienent for them.
If you do this, here are a few tips:
1. Have your questions ready at the call - just in case they want to answer right then.
2. Since we're horror writers make that clear too - they'll usually ask what you write anyway. Why? For some odd reason people think we're wackos and there's always the strident anti-horror/supernatural/magic type out there that really won't want to talk to you. They're out there - believe me. Give them the chance to opt out over the phone so you don't waste your time and theirs later.
3. At some point during the interview or right after make sure you make it clear that you're writing fiction and that some things that are a 'reality' will have to be changed to fit your world and story. That you try to make everything as 'real' as possible but you're confined by word count, plot flow, character stuff etc. etc. etc. That way they don't read your book later and do the ... ... "I TOLD her it took months to get results back from the lab!"
4. Keep track of who you talked to and their titles. Make sure to give them thanks in the novel that they helped you with. Usually the 'Thanks to..." page comes before the story starts - sometimes after at the publisher's choice.
In all the interviews I've done I only had one bad one.
If you're polite and friendly they'll be the same and it'll be a great time. I spent hours with one of mine and we had a ball. Windigo will be all the better for his insights and suggestions.

After ensuring that this one guy knew who I was, what I was and what I wrote about - I asked for an interview. Also, since he was a PI and a PI figures heavily into Apparitions I thought it'd be neat to have a blurb from a PI. I made certain he realized what Apparitions was about. Everything was clear and he said he was interested in reading it and providing blurb about the PI part of the novel.
Great! (So I thought...)
I got to his office and shortly into the convo found out that he was...one of those. You know the type - so 'rational' that their mind is slammed and painted shut with multiple coats of Isn'ts, Can'ts and a final gloss of Uber Serious. The type that doesn't want Harry Potter being played because it'll lead people to magic use and the devil! If they haven't personally seen or experienced it - it doesn't cannot possibly exist.
Which is fine - he can believe what he wants. I'm content to let people like that go blissfully on their way - blinders intact. Until they start attacking me and what I do. Which is what he did. I kept it polite though, in so far as I could because rudeness rarely helps. But oooooh how tempting...
I ended up fuming on the way home...and then he called...which made me more irritated...and led to rants...

The road to hell is paved with good intentions dear Raven...
Honestly though, what I find most amazing about the PI and his actions that he actually read Apparitions; knew ahead what it is was and what it was about, but waited until you were in his office to unleash the Critism torpedoes.
Some people confuse me.
Thanks for it info though. I'm sure it'll come handy one day...
That would suck to have to listen to someone lectureing you like that. Sounds like you handled pretty well though. I'm not sure I would have been able to have the same amount of tact that you did. Thanks for the advice.
