Hi Sully, I continue to make my way chronologically through your novels -- THE PHASES OF HARRY MOON in March, BORN BURNING in April, and THE MARTYRING in May (I've skipped over 1978's DIAPSON and am saving it for last, I guess because I got the sense that the Sully I've been discovering really emerged with the Harry Moon book -- I guess time will tell me if that's so). Now just this past weekend I devoured DUST OF EDEN, and after HARRY MOON, it's my favorite of the bunch so far, certainly the best of the supernatural horror oriented lot. I love the concept so much: that some of the highly secret and protected red dust from the Fertile Crescent that may have been that used in the Biblical creation, or in some act of creation older and more mysterious, has found its way into the life of an artist who unwittingly discovers its powers of creation and control under her paintbrush. Here's some of what I posted over at Shocklines about the book: Sully shows enormous range, from domestic-scale impressions of the raw feelings in hurtful and loving human relationships, to evocations of the other side of death, with all its cosmic horror and mystery. This story is as unique and fascinating an account of reclamation of the dead as I’ve yet encountered -- there are more than enough seriously bone-chilling passages, written with more than journeyman-like flair -- Sully is truly one of the masters, and he graces our genre when he writes on these themes. The ways that people hold power over each other, the ways we bargain for love, the ways we wish we can make people feel what we want them to feel – it’s all here, and much more. Gratitude needs more syllables. Three syllables are not enough to prolong my...er, gratitude-dodah. My, my, you are determined to lift me from the ranks of failure, I can see that. And just when I was getting comfortable with anonymity. Well, maybe not anonymity. I am notorious. But that's another story. Anyway, I'm glad you can't tell whether my eyes are a bit weepy this early in the maudlin a.m. We who write all want to be heard, and as I've tried to say before, Mark, you confirm the whole process for me down to the roots of soul-blood poured out on the page. It's just plain gratifying (four syllables) to know that things I try to invest my work with actually matter to readers. Thanks for your astuteness, your discerning insights into life and people, and for taking the time to proliferate my humble efforts in ways I cannot do for myself. -- Thomas "Sully" Sullivan |
