Hello Mr. Sullivan, I was gushing about you over at the message board, and Nanci told me about your board here at Horror World, so I thought I'd drop by and say thanks directly. I'm a newcomer to your work, having recently discovered you through your inspiring, lively heartfelt essays at Storytellers Unplugged (thanks to both David Niall Wilson and John Skipp for pointing me your way). From there I found your website and signed up for your "Sullygrams" monthly email. I've found such an affinity for your non-fiction, and was drawn in so by the sample first chapter of THE WATER WOLF, that I did something I've never done before. I started shopping the new and used Internet shops for your books, and picked up all seven novels (the ones that were in print I bought new, of course -- the point is to try to put money in your pocket for the work you do). I've started with THE PHASES OF HARRY MOON, and at the halfway point, I couldn't be more excited about my discovery of your work. I'll save myself some typing and copy here part of my Shocklines post: I'm about halfway into his first novel, and I find him to be purely delightful. It's such a cliché to say a writer reminds one of this or that writer, but is in fact a true original. However I will say that I think of John Irving and Kurt Vonnegut as I read this book, which is full of comedy and clever wit, one of a kind characters, outrageous situations and developments, and a subtle narrative thread that is not so much a story being told, as it is characters being revealed. I'm very much looking forward to the rest of the book, and the other six that now sit on my shelf. I've found a very special author, and I cannot recommend him highly enough. Now I've got to tell you, honest to God, when I wrote that about Irving and Vonnegut, I had not seen the Chicago Tribune blurb on your website that makes the same comparison. Apparently, there really is something about your three that makes folks group you together! Anyway, one more thought before I close. With a name like Sullivan, and from the looks of you, I'd guess you have more than a drop of Irish blood in you. Whether that be the case or not, I'd like to wish you a happy St. Patrick's Day! I just realized in my posts here and at Shocklines I referred to THE PHASES OF HARRY MOON as your first book, but DIAPASON predates it by about a decade. Just for the record... Mark |

A long ton of thanks, Mark. Just starting to realize what an eclectic community you are a part of, and how thoroughly well-read it is. You would have to be a major player therein to have discovered DIAPASON! 23 days in the making, that was my protest shout when the world told me to take a hike. (The world was right.) THE PHASES OF HARRY MOON is another dimension entirely, as is THE WATER WOLF. For you to have an interest in all those parameters tells me you are indeed a man vested in writing for its own sake. Wish I had half your knowledge of contemporary lit, and if you don't mind, I might pick your brain sometime to fill in the gaps for me. Guys like you and Nickolas Cook are gold.
