So what's everybody reading now?
I know there used to be a "What are you reading post but I didn't want to try and find the old one, so what are you reading now?
I'm reading The Doorkeeper's by Graham Masterton. It's pretty interesting so far (about 100 pages in). A guy from American and his lady travel to England to try and figure out how his sister ended up dead and missing her internal organs after disappearing for several months. It turns out the agency she was supposed to be working for hasn't existed for thirty years. There's agood amount of weird mystery going on to keep me going. There's some connection tied to an ancient British nursery ryme, some really strange psychic occurances and it all seems to have something to do with another dimention/ divergent reality.
I loved Masterton's novel Prey which also had another dimention involved, as well as some of Lovecraft's creations involved in it. My only knock is that it seems like he uses the word "that" too much. I think that may just be pet peeve of mine though.
I'm reading Robert B. Parker's Split Image, the new Jesse Stone novel. I usually read a Parker novel in a couple of hours, but my reading time has been severely curtailed of late.
Next up is Horns by Joe Hill (which the woman at the library just told me was was "really bad")
I also just received review copies of How To Make Friends with Demons by Graham Joyce, and The Best Horror of the year Volume Two, edited by Ellen Datlow.
I finished Dean Koontz's BREATHLESS. I really enjoyed it. Like many of Koontz's recent works, this one involves animals. Being an animal lover, I may be more inclined to dig this kind of book than others. But it really worked for me.
I seem to be on a Koontz roll now. I've started his Frankenstein series. I thought I had read the first book when it originally came out, but it's not familiar at all.
Cronin had published a couple of literary novels before he landed a big deal for this three book series of vampire novel. He got advance praise from Stephen King, and when Cronin was on Good Morning America a couple of weeks ago, King surprised him by calling in to show some love.
Matt, if you liked Heart-Shaped Box, Hill's latest novel, Horns, is even better. At least, I thought so.
Just finished Darkness on the Edge of Town by Brian Keene. Short and not-so-sweet, it reminded me of a bleak dive-in movie from the 80s. Now I'm either going to start The Passage or an Edward Lee novel.
I'm still reading The Wizard's First Rule, and probably will be for awhile as it's a pretty hefty book and I read slow. I took a break to read a bunch of Manly Wade Wellman stories for my article but now I'm back to it along with all those Marvel Comics I get each month.
I ended up starting DEPRAVED by Bryan Smith. Smith really knows how to crank up the tension. I'm loving this novel. By the time I finish, I should have James Lee Burke's new novel, THE GLASS RAINBOW. He's my favorite writer, and his stuff immediately moves to the top of the pile.
