A.C. Benson Article is up
I have just posted a new article over at the Vintage Horror site. This one focuses on A.C. Benson, the brother of someone I previously wrote about, E.F. Benson. At some point I will do an article on R.H. Benson to round out three of this families four writers. Hope you enjoy it.
I've been on 4 cruises, and I've loved three of them, and only liked the 4th one (that one was on RCL, a dirty ship, and I got that freaking stomach bug on the last day).
We don't have the exact date set yet. We signed up for one of those listen-to-a-time-share-speal-to-get-a-big-cheap-vacation deal and they threw in the cruise. So we will be going to Florida twice this year as a result. The deal was pretty good though so I can sit through a boreing sales pitch for it. I guess it's a Carribian Cruise. I'm looking forward to being on the boat more than anything. I think we are probably going sometime in August. Where is your cruise going to?
Do either of you have any advice for someone new to the cruise thing?
Well, it depends on how long you are gone for and where you are going, but I would advise you to take an early seating for dinner if its not open seating, and to get off at every port and see as much as you can.
And if you are going to buy something expensive like gems, don't, unless you know what you're doing or go with someone who does.
And when you do go to the dining room to eat, get a table with other people if you can, you will meet some great people who could become lifelong friends. And if you want two entree's, ask for them. Don't worry about what they will think, people do it on the cruises all the time.
Never buy drugs on the islands, and never bring them on board. If you bring alcohol on board they will confiscate it for the trip. If you want to bring booze on board, take a colored water bottle with you on the trip, take it with you when you get off the ship, and fill it up with booze before you go back on. Seal it tight as they may make you put it through the x ray machines.
If you smoke cigars, be carefull, there are tons of counterfit cubans out there. Ask your ships purser for a good store to recommend to you. If you do purchase some, there is nothing better than being up on the top decks, very late in the evenings, with a drink, and cuban cigar. It will be deserted up there believe it or not, except for others like you smoking a cigar. I've met some great people that way.
The casino's slots are rigged to pay poorly so don't spend a lot on them.
Go see any show they offer.
Wake up early to see the sun rise.
Bring lots of suntan lotion, spf 95.
Don't expect to get drunk on the mixed drinks they offer. They charge a fortune for them and they do not have a lot of alcohol in them. They taste good, but they outta for $9.00 a glass.
Make sure the deck chair you sit on is clean.
If you are going to buy anything on the ship, wait until your last day. The prices are always lower on the the last day.
Bring a hat.
Have fun Matt! You've got to let us know how it went.
It's a pretty short cruise we're booked on although we may try and upgrade it to get another day or two. For now it's a 3day/2 night cruise. I don't smoke, drink alcohol or do drugs, so I should be good on that count. I actually don't like to gamble either but my wife has said she may to try it a little to see what it's like. I will go with her but I can't bring myself to lose more than a couple dollars on any bet. I know I sound like a load of fun don't I. I appreciate the tips. Particularly in regards to the prices dropping on the last day and viewing the sunrise. What was your favorite cruise?
The first one is always the one you remember because it is so new and exciting. It was a short Carnival Cruise and we went to the Bahama's and another island nearby. We met some nice people there who we still e mail. What's really weird is that a year after this cruse I had to go to Maine for some buisness and when I walked into the hotel resturant, I ran into a guy who we cruised with! He lives in Ohio and I live in N.H.! What a co-incidence that was!
The Best cruise was an Eastern Caribbean cruise where we left from San Juan and went to St. Thomas, St Croix, St Kits, Antigua, St Lucia, and then back to San Jaun. It was 7 nights, and 8 days. It was very relaxing and I made it a point to see as much of the islands as I could. It was also the most romantic cruise I'd ever been on (yes, I was with my wife )
The most memorable cruise I went on was to the Western Caribbean were we left out of New Orleans and went to Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Cozumel, and back to New Orleans. A few of those places are dangerous and the military drove around on trucks toting machine guns while you walked around (no, it wasn't New Orleans). We went into some very poor towns, real poverty, and I will admit to being a bit scared while we walked around them. It was very exciting because it was different from what we were used to, but now that I've been to those countries, I have no desire to go back. This was the cruise I got the stomach virus on, with Royal Caribbean, and the ship was not that clean.
The last cruise we went on we took my son and daughter with us. It was a Carnival cruise for only 4 nights and we went out of Miami and went to the Grand Caymans and Cozumel. It was great being with them, (she was 18, he was 25) and watching their reactions. We'd been to both places before so we didn't feel like we had to do everything so we let our kids pick the places they wanted to go. They wanted to swim with the sting rays really bad so we did that (this was before that actors death).
Have a blast Matt, and let us know what you think. I bet it makes you want to go back for a longer one!
