I'm curious what people here would list as their top 5 favorite horror writers/ influences of all time might be and what novels or short stories of theirs had the greatest impact on you selecting them. The following are my choices. 1. Ramsey Campbell - Incarnate, Ancient Images, The Grin of the Dark novel's and countless awesome short stories. 2. M.R. James - "A Warning to the Curious", "The Ash Tree", "Number 13", "The Mezzotint", "Oh Whistle and I’ll Come to You, My Lad", etc. 3. E.F. Benson - "Caterpillars", "The Room in the Tower", “Bagnell Terrace”, “The Witch-Ball” and other great short stories. 4. William Hope Hodgson - "The Whistling Room", "The Derelict","Out of the Storm", and more great short stories. 5. J. Sheridan LeFanu - “Schalken the Painter", “Dickon the Devil”, "An Account of Some Strange Disturbances in Aungier Street", and more great short stories. |

Ray Bradury - The Martian Chronicles Stephen King - Salems Lot Peter Straub - Ghost Story Tom Piccirilli - November Mourns Gary Bruanbeck - Prodigal Blues Each one of these changed the way I viewed horror after reading them. They were all defining moments for me, and as you can see with the last two entries, I can still be quite effected by what I read after reading horror for the last 40 years. |

Thanks! I've had that collection on my to buy list for some time, and I'm snagging a copy in a few days. The only Campbell I've read is The Darkest Part of The Woods, and although I've read some bad reviews for it online, I loved it-I even plan on re-reading it soon. I have Secret Story in a tbr pile waiting to be read also. |
