I've taken to watching horror movies on Sunday mornings when Nancy goes to church. I've caught a few of the After Dark Horrorfest movies: The Deaths of Ian Stone, Reincarnation, and Crazy Eights. My overall impression: meh. Reincarnation was the best of the three. The Deaths of Ian Stone was visually creepy, but there came a point where the film jumped the shark and went from intriguing to Are you kidding me? Crazy Eights I saw this morning. Standard trope premise with average characters (why did there need to be a minister?) and a creepy location, but the ending was lackluster. This is another horror movie set in a rundown asylum-like building with a supernatural force taking out the characters. What I don't understand is why any of these movies are "banned from public viewing" or "too extreme for the public to see" when movies like Saw and Hostel are right out there. I've decided that when a new horror movie comes out, I find out if it has an Asian original and see that. Case in point: Shutter. I liked the original but was told by a fellow video-store patron not to waste my time with the remake. Was it that one or The Eye? No, it was One Missed Call. Either way, I enjoy the Asian originals much better than the American remakes. That's all I'm saying. I did like The Messengers, The Gathering, and The Others. All three were well done and though they may've been full of standard horror tropes, the twists were worth it. I'm not much into the overly bloody but the more psychological and creepy flicks so if anyone has any suggestions, let me know. Peace out, Gary . . . |
