Post subject:  Horrorworld October 2010 Horror Story Exercise

I am really pleased to announce that we have a special guest moderator for this new go around of stories! He is the owner of White Noise Press, a published author, and the illustrator for way too many books to mention by your favorite horror novelists (James Moore, Steve Vernon, etc...), and an all around great guy Keith Minnion! Keith will post here soon what his topic will be.

For those new to this, or want to participate, I will put down some of the rules:

1) The deadline for this exercise is October 8th. Keith will provide his email address and when you send him your submission please put "Horrorworld Story Submission" in the subject line.

2) All stories should be between 1250 and 1500 words. They can be less, but try not to go over. If you do go over, email Keith and explain why. As moderator he will be the only person to wave the rules.

3) The story must include the topic somewhere in the plotting. The story does not have to be about the topic, but must at least include a reference to it. Other than that, your imagination is the only other limit in plotting. Some authors, including myself, love to experiment with different styles with these exercises, so if an author wants to try something new, this would be a good way to do so.

4) Authors names will NOT be published with the story. If an author wishes to reveal which story is his after they are posted they can. But I will say, it's a lot of fun to try and guess who wrote what.

5) Readers will and can comment on the stories after they are posted. The authors would love to read what people think of their work. In fact, commenting is encouraged.

6) Keith has the final word on EVERYTHING. As moderator direct all your questions to him either here or at his email address.

7) If you are new to this, please go to The Writers Den here in Horrorworld in the Board Index pages and you will see the prior four exercises we've done. They are: Moving Day, Ten Penny Nails, First Dates From Hell, and Ala Laymon.

viewforum.php?f=58

Please feel free to ask any questions about the rules I've posted above and myself or past authors will be happy to answer them.

Tt

And thanks Keith for moderating!

Hey, guys, this sounds like fun. Like Tony said, just send me your stories as a .doc or .rtf attachment to an email, or in the body of an email itself. The only thing I will do will be to delete your name so the story can be anonymous. I will send it over here, and then the fun can begin. Email me at: kminnion@gmail.com. Just be patient: I will only be able to do this in the evenings when I get home from work, so if you email me something during the day just wait for it to go up that night, thanks.

As for the horrific element: A story I just sold to CD has an item mentioned in it that I think might lend itself to a horror story: Burying Boards, those thick hardwood planks that newly dead bodies would be strapped/wrapped onto during the Winter months and then stored in the attic or someplace cold, waiting for the Spring thaw so a grave could be dug....

Can we make it October 7, or October 11? From October 8 till the 10th I will be down South visiting with my son, who is doing a chemical engineering internship with Kimberley-Clark at a huge paper mill they have down in Beech Island. I will be spending much of October 8th on puddle-jumpers between Allentown PA and Augusta GA!

Now this is pretty damn cool! Of course, I now feel like I'm going to have to give this story a little extra.

Thanks, Keith!

Hhmmm, Keith explained a Burying Board, and I still have no idea what he's talking about. :(

Post subject:  Re: Horrorworld October 2010 Horror Story Exercise

In the wintertime, in the northern states, the ground freezes so hard it is impossible to dig a grave without using a backhoe. Before there were backhoes, before there was refrigeration, people had to come up with creative solutions to the problem of what to do with old Aunt Martha's body until the Spring, when the ground thawed enough to allow someone to dig her grave and plant her properly. What people did was to place Aunt Martha on a sturdy plank of hardwood and bind her body to it, tightly, then store her on her "burying board" someplace cold and relatively free of varmints, like in an attic, or an empty unheated third floor room. They didn't want her to spoil, you see, and, when it came time to plant her, they didn't want to have to "straighten her out", either. The board was good at keeping corpses flat. If you are lucky, you might find one in an old antique or junk shop in Maine or Minnesota. You can make a good coffee table out of them, I hear, or a cradle for your new baby....

It's an idea for a story: :) :D

I'm very close to finishing mine. When I'm done I will let it sit for a week and then think its the biggest load of crap I ever wrote.

I've got an idea, but it feels like it's too....standard. I'm going to try to think of something else, but if I can't, at least I have something to fall back on.

Yeah, that's the problem with mine, but I'm hoping its still an entertaining read. I finished it last night.

Post subject:  Re: Horrorworld October 2010 Horror Story Exercise

My story came to me in the form of a kind of weird, black & white snapshot of just one scene in my mind, so it's a little ruff building a story around that. I've got about half of it down, though.

I even think the ending for the idea I have feels, I don't know, like everybody else would've done it that way.

No vampires. I think I'm going to have to come up with something to top my zombie story from last time, though.

Post subject:  Re: Horrorworld October 2010 Horror Story Exercise

Ender asked a good question in the email accompanying his story file: his story does not have an actual burying board in it - does that disqualify it? No, not at all! If even thinking about a burying board leads your imagination to a place where a story is waiting, that's enough. The burying board as idea catalyst is just fine.

Ender's story is the first one to the party. Next guy better bring some beer.

H.D., you've got to finish a story sometime! Decide then put it away for a week. Steve Vernon taught me that years ago and it's great advice. I find so many stupid mistakes when I do that.

I know. I remember in one chapter in On Writing, King says you should stash your first draft away so that when you take it back out to edit, it should look like an old relic to you.

But what does that guy know? It's not like he's sold millions of books or anything.

Would it be considered sucking up to the moderator if I were to tell him my favorite painting of his was the cover for The Last Motel by Brett McBean? ;)
