OK,,,i do no consider myself a "writer" per se,,,once in a while ill write a story,,,,once in a great while,,,,someone will like it,,,

Problem is,,,,it seems like its hard for me to,,,"get going" for lack of a better term,,,,i work 3rd shift mostly every night and i get a bunch of ideas ide like to use (yes im one of those guys who thinks he has a novel in him),,,but then i get home and i cant get motivated to get any ideas down.

Anyone else have this problem,,,seems like if i can just get my frame of mind from work to home i would be set,,,

You have to push yourself. I find once I start writing, I can't stop.

I have this same problem . I also work third shift and while I am at work, I come up with ideas and story plots and seem to keep the imagination flowing but then when I get home I lose it all. Cannot get back the same frame of mind I had at work.
I have started jotting down the things I come up with at work hoping this will help.

Yep, this describe me perfectly. I love to write. I really do. But (there's always a "but" when we are making excuses).......

I work evenings. My wife works days. We have a daughter who will be two later this month. During the day when I watch Emma, it's almost impossible to write. I can't really tell my daughter to go away, it's daddy's writing time. When Kellie gets home, I see her for a bit, we have dinner, and I go to work. After sitting at a computer all night, the last thing I want to do at 1 a.m. is sit at another computer to write. And with our work schedules, every day we have off together I spend with my girls.

Are these just excuses? Maybe. But it is what it is.

Hi Adam-

The good news is that what you describe is not uncommon--not at all. There's not a writer I know who's immune to this problem, myself included. But I'm going to share a little secret with you that a very wise writer taught me a long time ago: lack of motivation comes from inactivity. This is true with almost everything, and it applies to writing as well--especially writing. The fact is, the less you write, the less you want to write. How to overcome this? Make it your goal to write something each and every day, even if it kills you. It doesn't have be a hundred pages--it doesn't even have to be a full page, so long as you write something. Even a paragraph is fine. Even writing about the fact that you don't want to write. Something. If you do this you'll find the writing process becomes much easier and--surprise--even enjoyable. I know it almost sounds too simple to be true, but trust me, it works. It's how I manage to complete my novels in just a year. ) One page per day=365 pages= 1 complete novel!)

Give it a try and see what happens. :t :t

Best of luck,

Andrew E. Kaufman
