How long does it take some of you to get to a finished product? Short Story? Novel? |

Well, it took me five years to write my (unpublished novel), so I kind of gave up on it after the first draft. Short Stories generally take me about 10-12 hours to write a first draft and about another five to six hours going through my various edits (I also have other people do a read through and mark things up for me, which is not included in that time). I used to think that I would only be interested in writing novels and didn't care for short stories. I've completely flipped on that and now I'm not sure that I will ever attempt to write another novel. |

Anywhere from 6 to 12 months to write a novel, then the rewrites take about a month for the first one, then the same again on the third and fourth etc. until I'm part way happy. A short story takes me about a day to write, then another day or two of rewrites. |

I have thirty plus shorts stories I actually worked off and on with for almost fifteen years. A little ridiculous, but I was trying to come into my own voice, too, and trying to perfect them. Nowadays, I can get a finished product after about the third or fourth rewrite. Much nicer on my end now. A novel, I can do in about six months, depending. I managed to write a three hundred page manuscript once in about three weeks. But then, I don't have any friends or a social life, either. |

When I posted before about my revision times I think I seriously underestimated the time. I don't seem to notice how much time it takes until I get ready to start a new one and look at my deadline. For instance, I want to write a story for an anthology that has a deadline of May 1st to submit (slightly less than a month away). I have serious doubts I will be able to write it and go through the ten to fifteen edits and rewrites I always have to go through to get it in shape enough that anybody will even glance at it. I'm going to try though. |

Always comes down to that, of course, but there are other factors. I've gotten good, quick feedback from antho editors, but I wish there were more of them that weren't so specific about what they wanted. But, it's a two way street, because a good anthology concept is so tempting that it makes one want to tool around with it. For example, thanks to one anthology concept, I'm working on a noir epic poem. I don't know if it will work, but they said the format will be fine. |

Anywhere from three months to a year for novels, anywhere from a day to a few weeks for shorts... but revision, now. Revision can go on for infinity if it's not stopped by publication. |
