Firbolg Publishing is a small press out of Eugene Oregon. We fill a special niche in the horror world by releasing anthologies featuring not only modern authors, but the great masters as well. The Enter at Your Own Risk series is an ongoing anthology series; each with a specific theme. Our first featured stories from authors such as Stoker, Lovecraft, and Poe and paired them with modern authors who captured the tone, atmosphere, and feel of each of the Gothic classics. Our second was a gay-themed ghost story collection that once again included classics from authors such as Edith Wharton and featured an introduction by Robert Dunbar.

Our third in the series is a challenge for any writer! Over a bottle of wine, we here at Firbolg began contemplating classic stories from the point of view of secondary characters. This lead to Enter at Your Own Risk: Dark Muses, Spoken Silences. Four monster classic tales and the modern authors that will give voice to the 'others' in the story. Lord Ruthven and Miss Aubrey, Cthulhu and the Necronomicon, Katrina van Tassel and Bram Bones, Each will finally tell his or her side of the dark and sinister story.

We are looking for authors up to the challenge of tackling POE! In his infamous story “The Black Cat,” we descend into a madman’s fears and paranoia. But what of the other two characters in the tale? The cat and the narrator’s wife play very significant roles in this story, but we never hear directly from them. We want the stories from the cat and the wife. How did they see these horrific events? How did they feel as they watched the protagonist slip into madness? Choose one of Poe’s other characters and re-tell his terrible tale!

Submission guidelines:

Deadline: 30 April

word count: 2000-7000K

Payment: $35 flat fee

We want the tone, atmosphere, and feel of the Gothic masters. Less gore/ blood and more fear/ suspense.
