I just started reading this one and am so far absolutely loving it. It is so odd in both its plot and style, and I don't mean that in a negative way. It is like nothing I've read before, and I am enchanted and intrigued. I'll keep you posted as I read more.

Delighted that FLIGHT pleases you at its outset!

I'm a hundred pages in. I'm actually reading two other books at the same time, which is unusual for me but I couldn't settle on just one. Anyway, Storks and Angels has a real enchanting, magical quality to it. In a way, there's a Bradbury flavor to it. I am enjoying it very much.

Reading has slowed down a bit, but let me just say for anyone who sees this and hasn't read this book, GO GET IT! I was already a fan of yours, as you know, but I am being really pleasantly surprised by this one. The very style and language being used is so lyrical, it weaves this spell over the reader and really transports you into that fictional world. Kudos.

I'm pretty excited and nervous right now about a new short story idea I have. It would be a 911 story, which I know has been done to death; I've never written a story that dealt with 911 and never expected I would, but I got this idea which I think deals with an aspect of the tragedy that I've never seen dealt with before. Not just in fiction but in media coverage of the event. I am very excited by the idea but also terrified that I'm not up to the challenge, that i won't be able to do justice to the idea.

Thanks, Mark. I'm so pleased that FLIGHT is working well for you.

Trust in yourself, trust that you are the only one in the world who can tell this story, and that you'll do it to the best of your ability, and that that's quite "best" enough!

I will definitely give it my best shot. It is what I will work on next right after my current story. I asked permission from a friend to use the worries and fears he confided in me about his wife's uncoming birth of twins. I often steal bits and pieces of my friends' lives for my fiction, but this was such a personal matter I wanted to get his okay. Luckily I did.

I'm sorry I'm talking about me on your board, I just didn't want to abuse your email address and assume you'd be okay with me using it just to babble at you anytime I wanted.

You are officially my favorite straight man. I read the section of this novel where you again deal with homosexuality as something natural and to be as celebrated as heterosexuality. Your inclusion of this kind of thinking can only help, thanks for the positive vibes you send out. We need more like you.

Sorry it took me so long to read this one, life's been a bit hectic, but I have finished it now and just loved it. May have even surpassed Santa Steps Out in my estimation. I thought the prose was beautiful and just really wove a spell around me as I was reading, and the premise was so engaging and the characters so vivid. Then once the TV coverage started and the people started losing their angels, the mob forming, that was just some of the most riveting stuff I've read in quite some time. I also liked that you ended it with just the promise of what was to come instead of showing it to me. A stellar work.

I'm so pleased it worked for you, Mark!

[A few sentences on its Amazon page would be great, whenever you get around to it.]

Thanks for posting your reaction here.

Ciao!

I went to amazon and wrote a review for this book. It's "in process" now; hopefully it'll be posted soon. I've also talked it up on some of the message boards I frequent. The thing that strikes me about everything I've read of yours so far is how startlingly unique it is. It is a shame to me that so much of popular fiction today is really formulaic, just the same thing being fed to the masses time and time again, dressed up in different packages but indentical at the core. Your stuff stands out and I would love to see you start gaining more recognition for your originality of thought and style. I'll do my part to spread the word.

Always my pleasure to do what I can. I'm in talks right now with a little company called Sideshow Press about a chapbook and have an article and a book I'm a part of up for something called the Rondo Hatton Awards, so maybe one day I can ask you to return the favor for me. Right now I'm just trying to get people to vote for those Rondo Hatton awards.

I just found this from John Helfers last spring, as part of a panel of YA editors:

The question posed:
-------------------------
Would you mind naming 10 seminal works of fantasy that an aspiring YA fantasy author should read?

John picks *Flight* as one of the ten, saying:
----------------------------------------------
A Flight of Storks and Angels by Robert Devereaux: One of the first fantasy novels I acquired during my time overseeing the Five Star SF/Fantasy line, and the one acquisition I am the most proud of in that line. Devereaux writes rural fantasy unlike anyone else, with incisive character portraits of both adults and children, keen insight into human nature, and a plot that gradually unfolds until the reader is swept away by it. A work worthy of being reprinted by a major publisher.

Needless to say, it made my day!

Robert
