Does anyone here read Jordan Krall at all? He's a Bizarro-nior-gross-out writer that I think people here would really enjoy. My favorite book of his is Piecemeal June - a story about a man who falls in love with a living sex doll and his tarot-reading cat.
Even Edward Lee likes him (though, he's talking about Krall's other book "Squid Pulp Blues"):
"Krall has quite a flair for outrage as an art form, and with SQUID PULP BLUES, he's created a wholly unique terrascape of Ibsen-like naturalism and morbidity; an extravaganza of white-trash urban/noir horror."

I haven't read PIECEMEAL but I love SQUID PULP. Krall's dynamite!

Yeah, Krall is excellent. As far as the so called "Bizarro" writers go, he's the best of the bunch. Piecemeal June was great, and Squid Pulp looks to be as good or better. If you're into "controlled weirdness", he's your man!!

Post subject:  Re: Jordan Krall?

I just ordered PIECEMEAL JUNE along with Gina Ranalli's latest.
But I gotzt to ask. OK now. Lets see if I got this straight. Edward has this thing with crabs. Jordan, you have this squid thing going. I live in Minnesota. We have 3 ounce crayfish and clams. It is impossible to get worked up about these things.
So, I like eating cabbage. I eat a bunch of cabbage. Do either of you think I should move to a coastal region so I can get obsessed on seafood? Cabbage is pretty cool. I would hate to get a rock lobster thing going and then find out cabbage is still on my mind.

Post subject:  Re: Jordan Krall?

JPOKELA- thanks for ordering PIECEMEAL JUNE.

I know that Ed Lee loves seafood ... but I don't despite my obsession with squid. Don't get me wrong - I WANT to like seafood.. but whenever I try it, I can't get into it. I think my attraction is one of love/hate. It's a fascination. A lot of sea life both fascinates and scares me. Crabs, too. Japanese spider crabs scare the shit out of me. So do vampire squid.

Speaking of which, I'd love to know some seafood recipes that contain squid but don't taste like seafood (squid fritters?) I wonder if Ed has any.. :)

Hey Jordan. Maybe you should find one of those 50 foot long squids and just roll around with it for a while! Squid do seem like they belong to a different life force than the rest of the species on this planet. Alien inhabitants. Outlive us all. Squid and cockroaches will fight it out for possession of the little free space left on the planet. Of course most of Earth will be a giant mushroom mycelium.

Post subject:  Re: Jordan Krall?

JPOLEKA: 3-ounce crayfish and clams? Wow! Yes, such things are worth getting worked up over! (In Seattle they have a clam called a geoduck that wieghs up to 10 pounds! (I ate a 3-pounder.) Jordan: consider the unqiue irony: you write about crabs and squid but don't eat it yourself. H. P. Lovecraft wrote about crabs and squid, but didn't eat it either... Perhaps you're his reincarnation!

Edward Lee

PS--in Seattle I bought a 10-pound live Alaskan King Crab. ($125!) When we got it home we realized we didn't have a pot big enough so, alas, I had to divorce the magnificent beast's legs from its body while still alive. Take heart, though: crustaceans don't have "parasympathetic" nerves; hence they can't feel pain. The crab was delicious, however, and its carapice is immortalized in my shell collection.

Edward, just thinking about having a live 10-pound crab in my house is both fascinating and frightening.

Do you have any pictures of your shell collection?

Hey Jordan. I finished PIECEMEAL JUNE! Had alot of fun reading it! Twisted enough for me! And then some.......
I liked the Captain Beefheart reference. I am a big fan. Got around 20 CDs. Some of the bootlegs are of decent quality. Most have serious audio problems. I like the early stuff before Trout Mask Replica.
Anyway, cool book and you are now on my gotta get em list for new releases. On the other hand Gina Ranalli with SKY TONGUES handed me my first disappointment from her. Flat, non-quirky. I spose all the mues out there will look at it as a brave breakout memoir.......

Post subject:  Re: Jordan Krall?

JPOKELA, thanks so much! I appreciate your reading it. Glad you liked the Beefheart reference. I love that guy. Trout Mask Replica is one of my faves.

If you liked Piecemeal June, you'll love Squid Pulp Blues (the one Edward read). It's darker and grittier.

I think the Edward Lee influence will be clear in SPB. I think reading his stuff over the years has taught me that I don't have to shy away from the gruesome aspects of life (i.e. sex). Reading THE BIGHEAD for the first time really blew my mind.

Post subject:  Re: Jordan Krall?

STRICTLY PERSONAL is my favorite Beefheart album. This is the one that Krassner stole from the record company, ran it through an echo machine to make it "cool" and used it to start his own record company "Blue Thumb Records." It immediately ran into lawsuits and further delayed the Beef's chances of public fame.
Some of the alternative takes were recovered and released about ten years ago as I MAY BE HUNGRY BUT I SURE AIN'T WEIRD.
My favorite Beefheart song is Electricity. That is Ry Cooder on the guitar moving things along asap. He left before the first album was completed.

A couple lines from the song.

"Move into light, find the bright
to hide your shadows deep"
"friends don't mind just how you grow"
I have always found that second quote totally creepy.
THE HORROR!!!!

Post subject:  Re: Jordan Krall?

Yeah! Electricity is the one that pops into my head the most often. That and Abba Zabba.

It's surreal talking Beefheart on an Ed Lee board. I think I'll try listening to one of CB's albums while reading CREEKERS again. That'd be quite a trip.

oh, JPOKELA, would you mind posting an honest review of Piecemeal June on amazon? I know some people aren't into posting reviews but if you are, I'd really appreciate it. (Thanks either way!)

I actually do have some pix of my shell collection but I'm so computer illiterate, I don't know how to post them! Plus, I suspect they'd take forever to download 'cos I have dial up. One of these days I'll get a dedicated website and have all the pix. My best pick is of a live Chinese "dragon" lobster that a pilot friend of mine brought me all the way from Hong Kong!

It was delicious...

Later!

Post subject:  Re: Jordan Krall?

Sure Jordan, I will try to ge ta review up there. I have sold books for years at Amazon but never have tried any other features. Bizarro is a breath of fresh air. So much horror is stale and imitative. Reading Ed Lee got me into horror. I have not found much past Necro authors that interest me.
Ed Lee, Tom Piccirilli, Brian Hodge, Charlee Jacob, Dick Laymon, Mike Arnzen. That's pretty much my "A" list. There are of course many individual books that are loads of fun. JIGSAW MAN by Gord Rollo comes to mind.
But to spend my barely earned bux? You, Prunty,Ranalli, probably Donihe, Hansen, CMIII. Gotta look at that Jeff Burk SHATNERQUAKE. Got up to 180 or so on Amazon bestsellers!

HEY ED!!!!! DOWN HERE!!!!!!
How do you get the durned meat out of the shells without ruining them? You are talented. I am happy to get my hamburger out of the wrapper without major incident. Jeez. some people just got it made......
HEY ED!!! DOWN HERE!!!!

Well Jordan I just put up the 19th review of PIECEMEAL JUNE. Do you think WAR AND PEACE has that many reviews?
I mentioned that the only better book I read this year was ALL HANDS ON DICK by Jack Hoff.
(Ed's joke). I also mentioned that there were a couple words longer than 8 letters in it but they didn't take away from the action. I said that I liked all the pictures but with the LSD I took I wasn't sure if they were actually 3D or not. Hope you like my review!!

How would one describe the Bizarro genre? The first thing that comes to mind is something like a Takashi Miike film.

Piecemeal June and Squid Pulp Blues seem totally up my alley. I just queued them up for my next book order.

Post subject:  Re: Jordan Krall?

Bizarro is the literary equivalent of the cult section of your video store. Simple put, it's the weird shit. There are many different authors involved and many different approaches that are taken. I would recommend to people on this board checking out Jordan Krall and Carlton Mellick III, as both of them approach the genre from a horror perspective. Also, check out www.bizarrocentral.com and look through the books and authors sections. That will give you a good idea of the kind of bizarro books out there.

I am fairly new to the Bizarro family of good reading. I remember when Matt at Shocklines announced he was now carrying Bizarro books. I went "huh." Ok. Isn't that bizarre and never payed no never mind.
Last year I started reading. What a blast of fresh air. Fun reads from people with ideas. They ain't all good, let me assure you of that. The genre is still defining itself and there are many authors with many ideas of what bizarro should be.
Have fun!

Post subject:  Re: Jordan Krall?

Another bizarro book people here should check out:

Apeshit by Carlton Mellick III
It's Mellick's slasher-movie tribute but it plays with the idea of the victims being more hardcore and vicious than the villain.
It is also Mellick's most vicious, most graphic, and grossest book. If you're a fan of gross-out or hardcore horror you will love this book.

Post subject:  Re: Jordan Krall?

Because of this thread I went and got myself copies of Krall's two books. Dug JUNE and loved BLUES. Definitely looking forward to more.

My only previous encounter with bizarro fiction was RAZORWIRE PUBIC HAIR by Mellick, which I read years ago. Liked it alright (killer ending) but apparently not enough to make me buy anything else until now.

Wetbones and Vantro: Thanks!

My next novel is FISTFUL OF FEET which is a bizarro Spaghetti Western with horror/giallo elements. Very weird and very violent. Oh, and there's some kinky sex, too. It'll be out in the Fall from the same publisher.

I actually just got back from ordering Squid Pulp Blues. Hopefully I'll have it by the end of the week, as I'm pretty interested in it. I remember hearing about Piecemeal June when it was still forthcoming and wanting to get it, but a bunch of other books came along and it somehow slipped my mind until I read about it on here. If I like SPB, and I'm pretty sure I will, then Piecemeal will be my next order. Also Apeshit sounds interesting. I've liked a few of Carlton's other books, so I might have to get my hands on that one as well.

FISTFULL OF FEET is a goddamn masterpiece! Loved the references to old Italian genre flicks, and not just westerns but also gialli and horror films. Amidst all the great and hilarious things in the book I somehow was particularily pleased by the starfish. It should get its own spin-off novel. I also like that Krall's books are getting longer. I'm about ready for that Stephen King sized tome from him.

Glad you enjoyed it, Wetbones! Thanks for reading.

as for the starfish... In an earlier draft, there was more background about it. Maybe I'll revisit it sometime.

and since you mentioned it, maybe I should get started on that 1000 page giallo novel I've been thinking about.... :)
