Just wondering what everyone's favorite Ed Lee book is and more importantly; why?

I would have to go with the majority of readers i'm assuming and pick any of the infernal series. The mephistopolis is by far the most incredible environment i've ever read in any literature. I feel as though i've actually been to the city and can picture everything that takes place there as if i've visited the wonderous vacation spot!

How do you narrow it down to one???
Ever Nat was my first and i thought was hilarious. I love the Bighead. Also Goon was ace, made me laugh out loud!!!

Mine is easy. Old school. Succubi. The first Lee novel I ever read, way back when. Instant fan since.

Why? It was bold and nasty and unlike anything I'd ever read in the horror genre, except for maybe early Clive Barker.

It does become difficult to narrow it down, but I would have to say City Infernal. It was my first introduction to Ed Lee and i could not get over how amazing the descriptions were. Absolutely loved it. Another one I loved that I don't think gets talked about enough is his chapbook entitled edward lee's quest for sex, truth and reality. I absolutely loved that one.

My intro to Lee was THE BIGHEAD. I just couldn't avoid looking at that Overlook Connection edition cover in my local bookstore. Had to give it a try after Roy Robbins of Bad Moon Books told me that Ed was the real deal.
Favorite? Impossible. Totally impossible.
THE DRITIPHILIST hits me the hardest. COVEN is a blast. SPLATTERSPUNK makes me lose my lunch. PORTRAIT OF THE PSYCHOPATH AS A YOUNG WOMAN is as tough as it gets.
SHITHOUSE is off the charts. Impossible. Just impossible.
THE PIG? HEADER? GOON?
THE DEATHS OF THE COLD WAR KINGS? Only Kennedy death probe that makes sense.
Impossible. Just impossible.

Wow. Believe it or not, I have never considered my 'favorite' Ed Lee novel, novella, or short story. I guess I would have to list both 'The Stickmen' and 'Operator B' as favs. However, I truly love them all. Bob

Among the Leisure titles it's a toss up between FLESH GOTHIC and SLITHER. With the small press hardcore stuff I'd probably pick THE PIG.

I agree. It's very difficult picking my favorite Ed Lee novel. The Infernal series was excellent, Gast was excellent, The Messenger was excellent, and Brides of The Impaler was excellent. Flesh Gothic was good, but probably my least favorite so far.

From Leisure, it would probably be Flesh Gothic or Infernal Angel.

Small Press, it would be The Minotauress.

Post subject:  Re: Favorite Lee book?

Folks: not to be too pretentious, but my favorite mass-market book of mine is still probably Infernal Angel; as for the small-press, hardcore stuff? It just might be one of my not-yet-published HPL ventures, HAUNTER OF THE THRESHOLD or TROLLEY No. 1852.

But thanks, all, for your continued support and kind words!

Best,
Edward Lee

My first Lee books were Family Tradition and Bighead, so I'd have to count them among my favorites. Favorite Leisure, probably City Infernal. Kinda difficult picking out a favorite though, especially when you haven't read anything that you've disliked!

Ok but I have so many I can't seem to get enough Lee. I have pretty much read them all except for Header. But these a few of my favorites.

Monstrosity
Slither
Big Head
Flesh Gothic
Goon
Teratologist with/Wrath
Creekers
Coven
Incubi

Lilith666: then you'll like HEADER 2. I think I almost passed out yesterday writing more of it!

JPOLEKA: now that you mention it, a long time ago Overlook inquired about doing a massive reprint of the stuff I cowrote with John Pelan, and it would of course include SPLATTERSPUNK. I'll have to inquire.

Splatterspunk is definitely a book on which I'd like to get my hands. I'm about to read Header as soon as I'm finished The Golem. I can't wait!

Post subject:  Re: Favorite Lee book?

I think your first introduction into an Edward Lee book is going to be one of your favorites if not your favorite (granted you have to actually like the demented worlds Mr. Lee writes about). Having said that my first introduction was The Bighead and I literally couldn't put it down. First let me start off saying that I was introduced to the worlds of Edward Lee while working at the State Mental Hospital on third shift. So my world had already been warped by the state of our mental patients and the bullshit I saw there, but then the best thing to ever come out of that forsaken place was my friend was reading The Bighead and I found the cover a little interesting and read the first two pages, after that I begged him to finish the book so I could read it. I started at 11:15 (I know this cause it was when I had to sit with a patient for the next two hours) and I didn't stop until I left work that night and got to my car to drive home. If I could have read while I drove I would've finished it then. So it took me about a total of 10 hours to finish The Bighead.

To this day that is by far my favorite Edward Lee book, but after reading the 3 Infernal books they come in as a very close second.

Sorry to be so long winded on this post but thanks to The Bighead my limited reading at the time had been expanded greatly and to me nobody can beat Edward Lee for the pure excitement he has gifted me with in writing the works he does and renewed my love of reading.

Peace Out Cub Scouts!

P.S. Teralogist (having only read half so far) is starting to look like it might make a run for the second place title, but Mephistopolis is a very hard place to beat.

Flesh Gothic is the first Lee book I read and it is still my favorite. It was my first taste of all the Lee elements: the ars diavoli, the funky (paranormal) sex and twisted violence, the fully-fleshed and actually interesting characters, the Twilight Zone-esque twist ending. I've read it several times now and think it is still a great read.

My favorite small press tome so far is The Bighead; my first reaction was: this book is one big bowl full of badass. The priest is one of favorite Lee characters of all time and I love how he goes out at the end. Another great ending.

Favorite novella: In the Year of Our Lord: 2202. Great story, great read, even better ending. I mean who lets you write a book with an ending like that...if you don't know Lovecraft you won't get it...which could be a lot of potential readers. Crazy!

My favorite Lee story not yet read: Trolley No. 1852. I really dig the Lovecraft fragment and have high frickin' hopes for Lee's novella.

WOW.

After reading 30 some ed lee books, I have to say that I can not wait to read the reactions to Haunter of the Threshold. It has easily moved in as one of my top favorites (I am a fan of the "harder" stuff).

Fans of the Bighead have a great surprise around the corner.

Well done again.

Hey I was just looking over some old posts and saw this one. I thought it would be good to start it up again as it was started in 2009, some great stuff has come out since and Deadite have made some harder stuff easier to get hold of.

I must say Fav is hard to pin down, I love 'the Pig' iI think as this was my first encounter with Mr Lee nothing has ever seemed as shocking, even though the content is it still didn't have that first punch impact that the Pig had.

some of my top reads are Family Traditions, Bighead, Header/Header 2, Goon and Brain Cheese collection.

as lots of new stuff has been release i wondered if people have changed their favs?

THE PIG is real cool. It is so easy to feel in tune with the "director." Jeez, one or three minor mis-steps and this is what happens to a guy! He hits a common chord with me. And the two gals. A couple of troopers they are. Fun story top to bottom. And even the pig was appalled!
TROLLEY 1852 shot to the top of my Ed Lee list. I loved the careful attention to language. Great stuff. WITCH WATER also had a great clarity about it.
No favorite. Just a bunch of favorites.

I would have to say my favorite books (I just cannot pick one) are The Pig and The Bighead. I also loved Black Train. Would love to read Gast someday, though.

I've only read 10 or so so far, my favorite of which was probably Flesh Gothic, followed closely by Brain Cheese and Infernal Angel.
