Just finished reading Brett Savory's The Distance Traveled and absolutely loved it. Just ordered A Slice Of Heaven to continue Stu's journey. Before that I read Clive Barker's The Thief of Always which was brilliant. Next up is Edward Lee's The Sea Slop Thing. Very excited.

Recently read Lee's Terra Insanus- loved The Stickwoman and his new tale the Sea Slop Thing.

Jackpot - collaboration between Shane McKenzie/Kristopher Rufty/Adam Cesare/Dave Bernstien.

And just about to finish Something Terrible by Wrath James White and Son.

Lots to look forward to in the TBR pile.

Can't remember if I mentioned these books which I've read since coming back from Scare that Care Con:
Jonathan Janz, House of Skin
Kris Rufty, Skin Show
Jeff Strand, Dweller
Adam cesare, Tribesmen
Christian Jensen, Lone Survivor
Tim Waggoner, Nekropois Archives

I can say without hesitation that each and everyone one of these books is outstanding and highly recommended!

Tonight gonna read some old Charles Birken

Just read Different Seasons - Trever Palmer.

I have a few in the pile I want to read next and have no ideas. Any thoughts?

Succulent Prey by Wrath James White
The Folks by Ray Garton
Grave robbers Wanted by Jeff Strand
Prank Night by Kristopher Rufty
All Hallows' Dead by Bryan Smith

Last two are right for the time of year.

Every single one of those books is great. Last night, as I always do on Christmas Eve, I read MR James' Story of a disappearance and an appearance," a grisley Christmastime murder tale. Merry Chirstmas!

Yeah, Succulent Prey is epic!!! Now you need to read Prey Drive, I enjoyed that one even more.

Just finished a long line of Edward Lee... Flesh Gothic, Slither, Messenger, and Pages Torn...All blew me away. Loved every one of them.

Before those ones I read Robert Mccammons GONE SOUTH. Not horror, but amazing story.

Just picked up Mccammon's MINE and am on p.56... Why havent I read this one yet?

Oh jeez... audiobooks: Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (yet freaking again), Good Fences (A Scorched Earth Novel) and EMP: Equipping Modern Patriots: The Aftermath Volume 2.

Text/ebook: A Little Magenta Book about a Dollhouse (heh, wonder where I got that idea from...), Creekers (again, heh), Unintended Consequences by John Ross (AGAIN), and Dreadnought by BV Larson.

Hey, I've got diverse tastes and a touch of ADD.

Been listening to audiobooks a lot lately in the car and at work. Some re-read/listens, some new.

A ton of Lovecraft (nearly every story of his I could find on Youtube)
The Haunting of Hill House
The Hellbound Heart
The Great God Pan
The King in Yellow
The Exorcist
The Graveyard Book

It's been fun, as I've never listened to much in the way of audio before.

Post subject:  Re: What are you reading?

Took a break from horror and just read Dave Mustaine's (Megadeth) autobiography. I really enjoyed it.

Back to horror now

Reading the new anthology Christmas Horror Vol.1 featuring McKenzie, Strand, Southard and plenty of others

And Succulent Prey by Wrath James White. This one has sat on the shelf unread for too long.

Bigheadsballsack. Mustaines memoir is a pretty good read. I'm actually listening to the new 'deth right now. Dystopia. WAY better than the god awful super collider. As for horror, I've been reading a lot of Jonathan Janz. His newest Wolf Land is BRUTAL. Also read Michael Mcbrides Subterrestrial and Condemned. Plus, Bentley Littles The Influence and Kelli Owens The Hatch. Next up is Littles The Circle, Shane McKenzies Monsters Don't Cry and Weston Ochses Grunt Life.

I have had the Megadeth album on too. I think they are back on track. I really like the album and have had it on repeat through out the day. I really think Chris Adler (Lamb of God drummer) has added to the Megadeth sound and brought something new to the table.

As for reading I read the first few chapters of Succulent Prey, loved it and then work crept in and stole my reading time. I'll get back on it tonight.

Shane McKenzie's short story collection Wet and Screaming and Header 3 just turned up so might have to have a little look at that tonight.

Shane's work is totally radical, artfully offensive, and brilliant hardcore. Right now I'm reading MOONTOWN by Peter Atkins, screenwriter of several HELLRAISER movies, and a wonderful guy. The book is expertly atmospheric, creepy, and original.

Later!

Read Header 3.

Every Time We Meet At The Dairy Queen Your Whole Fucking Face Explodes - Carlton Mellick III

And Kristopher Rufty's - the Vampire Of Plainfield. Awesome story good mix of old school horror chill and modern gross twists. Ed Gein vs Vampires, what more could you want?

Back to McKenzie now.

Obviously we have all read books without posting in the last few months but I wanted to get this thread up a little higher. This last month, being somewhat jaded, I went back and read the Bighead again followed by Flesh Gothic. Both are masterpieces! Can't wait for 2017!

Funny you should say that, Splatter - I just finished listening to The Bighead again yesterday. Loved it, as always.

Happy to report that Ketchum and McKee continue their streak. The Secret Life of Souls is a must read. Maybe not for the hardcore scene but it's so well written that I didn't care about the lack of gore or violence, although it does have it's moments (where broken glass will make you cringe). It doesn't start off dark but trust me, it's fucking dark. It's like Old Flames, Red, and parts of The Woman wrapped into one complete book. Best book I've read in 2016.

Agree with you on THE SECRET LIFE OF SOULS. Now reading LOST ECHOES by Lansdale.

Post subject:  Re: What are you reading?

Tonight I shall re-read Lovecraft's "The Festival" which is set during the ancient Tide of Yule, and tomorrow night, as I always do on Christmas, I'll re-read MR James' "Story of a Disappearance and an Appearance" part of which takes place on Christmas day. I'll also watch the great early 70's film adaptation "Legend of Hell House," not a very Christmasy film but I believe it ends on Christmas Eve. Well, and in a few minutes I'm gonna watch Charlie Brown's Christmas. Have a great Christmas, holiday, and new year!

Post subject:  Re: What are you reading?

I've been reading a lot since I don't work much in the winter. I've read all of John Lockes books, he has several series. Yesterday, I re-read Andersen Pruntys Satanic Summer, great book! Recently read the young adult Grandma by JA Konrath and his son Talon. Kimberly A Bettes has a book called Exodus out that was sick as fuck, reminded me of Tim Millers Hell books. Probably the best I've read recently was Rusty Puppy, by Lansdale. I swear he can do no wrong. Bryan Smith just put out Murder Squad and John Everson just put out Redemption. Both are excellent. I'm re-reading Oak Hollow right now by Kristopher Rufty. I love his stuff. Going to follow that with Falling Angel, the book that inspired Angel Heart. Then I'm gonna bounce into Dead Cats: Traveling Circus of Wonders and Miracle Medicine Show. Necro had a sale on that one and I got a Hardcopy for ten bucks signed. Happy reading!

Just finished Header 3, and recently finished up the audiobook of The Damnation Game, by Barker. I think I'll try to scare up an audiobook of Gaiman's Norse Mythology next, or failing that go for some more old-school Barker.

Post subject:  Re: What are you reading?

Books read and recommended for August, 2017.
Hard cover -
1. Black Cat Mojo & Die Dog or Eat the Hatchet by Adam Howe from Thunderstorm Books. Some crazy, fun stories here reminiscent of Ketchum and Lansdale with a hoot or two thrown in.
2. Gateways to Abomination by Matthew M. Bartlett from Thunderstorm Books. More like a collection of sketches than short stories. Dream-like and short with disturbing scenes included.
3. Locke & Key: Heaven and Earth by Joe Hill and Gabrielo Rodriguez from IDW. I love this stuff. Great horror/fantasy.

Paperback -
4. Forgotten by Kelli Owen from Gypsy Press. Eerie story of rape’s effect on a family and self-induced amnesia. This is a page-turner and I really enjoyed it, but the ending was, in my opinion, flawed. SPOILER AHEAD - It works as a shocker but I can’t believe that an amnesia trigger-phrase that could be said by many people on many occasions would be chosen by a doctor and patient. That’s just crazy foolish.
5. Boy’s Night by Wrath James White and Matt Shaw from Matt Shaw Publications. Women get their revenge on men who rape and kill but most everybody is whacko.
6. D.O.A. III edited by Marc Ciccarone & Andrea Dawn from Blood Bound Books. Anthology of sex and death. What a combo. Some good ones here.

Digital -
7. Subhuman by Michael McBride AUP - McBride has outdone himself with this sci-fi/horror tome. Page-turning suspense and action combine with intricate real-life science and alien sci-fi in this masterful thriller. I look forward to more Unit 51 and the mouse.
8. There Were Other Versions of Us by Edward Lorn. Cool short story with many twists and turns.

Other -
9. Screaming Cacti from Thunderstorm Books. Excellent anthology includes author interviews and one with the publisher. Good stuff.

Favorites = #1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8 and 9.

Support Indie Publishers and Enjoy.

On this wonderful Christmas Eve/Christmas Morn, I'll be reading M.R. James' "Story of a Disappearance and an Appearance" (part of which takes place on Christmas) and Lovecraft's "The Festival" set during the Yuletide "which men know as Christmas though they know in their hearts it is older than Bethlehem and Babylon, older than Memphis, and older than mankind." What a great line!

May you all have a merry Christmas, happy holiday, and happy New Year!
