Damn you a$$holes! You had to tell me something like that existed, so after 2 days and some Facebook discussion, I'm going to have to have my own novella as well. Grrrr! Mrs. Frat is going to kick my ass for draining the account some more, but this is too good to pass up. We're lucky Jordan has the time at all to do this - he said he'll likely stop taking orders soon because he's getting backed up. Hell, Ed probably doesn't have time to take a dump any more between his current workload (and all those ideas he posted in the other thread!), traveling up to MD so much, and just living in general. I'll let you giuys know how it goes... and thanks, I guess!

Rereading (for the third time) The Shining, also picked up the new Anne Rice novel, The Wolf Gift, and it is actually pretty good...I haven't read any of her novels for years (got kind of burned out on the whiny-whoa-is-me Eurovamps) but couldn't resist a werewolf story...

Finished SOMA. Read Piccirilli's A CHOIR OF ILL CHILDREN for the third or fourth time. It's such a gem. I keep forgetting how much humor is in it. Along with violence, rising forces, and good well-conceived southern culture. Great work, Tom! I loved JOHN DIES AT THE END by David Wong. My son loved it. Cool read. I waited way to long to read it. I had heard so much good about it. ALL TRUE!! Next I will dig into the latest hardcover Dave Barnett just sent me.

I've been mainlining a ton of Lansdale these weeks (THE COMPLETE DRIVE-IN novels, SAVAGE SEASON and MUCHO MOJO as well as short story collections HIGH COTTON and BUMPER CROP) but took a break from those to dig into Jordan Krall's outstanding TENTACLE DEATH TRIP and am now reading through GENITAL GRINDER. The book reminds me a lot of Wrath James White's collection SLOPPY SECONDS, which probably figures since both include numerous entries by the respective authors into the Horror Convention Gross Out Contest. So far none of the stories in GRINDER have hate-fucked my soul like I sort of expected after Ed's introduction but Ryan Harding is definitely one hell of a talent and I'd love a novel from him. Once I'm done with the GRINDER, I'll probably go right back to Lansdale. I still have about half of BUMPER CROP left and just received the gorgeous new hardcover edition (from Subterranean Press) of his ACT OF LOVE in the mail yesterday.

The other night I read The German Student by Washington Irving and realized that it was he who invited the old 'You can have sex with me but only if you promised not to take off my collar" concept. Reading The Oval Portrait now by Nathanial Hawethorn which is so captivating I'm tempted to sequelize it, since it's public domain. Never realized how well Hawthorne managed imagery. Oh, and the other day I was opening old boxes of books and discovered Lansdale's Good, Bad, Indifferent signed hc and Shirley's Really Really, etc Weird stories. I'll be re-readin both of these next.

Ennis is a great writer although the recent issues of THE BOYS are a bit disappointing. But his PREACHER, HELLBLAZER and PUNISHER series are pure genius. Just read THE REVENANT by Michael Punke (it will be made into a movie soon). Good story, based on facts. Shows the other side of the "frontier myths". Now it's time for Straub's LOST BOY, LOST GIRL.

THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE INDIFFERENT reads pretty much like it's title. I think Sub Press told Joe "Hey, those other collections sold well, scrape up some more uncollected crappe." So Joe found anything he wrote he sent it away. The first two stories I read by Joe were STEPPIN OUT SUMMER 1968, and then THE NIGHT THEY MISSED THE HORROR SHOW. I guess I always had unrealistic expectations of him after those two doozies. John Shirley's collection is a gem. Now that's a load of the right stuff. Somebody here got me reading Phil Dick again. Just finished THE THREE STIGMATA OF PALMER ELDRITCH. Great! Next comes UBIK.

Anyone new to Joe Lansdale has plenty of good reading ahead! FREEZER BURN, THE BOTTOMS, THE BOAR, THE BIG BLOW are my favorites. Most Hap and Leonards are a real hoot also!

I realized that I'm a huge idiot for having repeatedly called for more Edward Lee science fiction on this board despite not even having read all the Edward Lee science fiction that already exists in print... So I'm aiming to fix that and currently reading OPERATOR B via the Bedlam Press paperback. It was kind of a hassle to order because the non-American amazons don't stock it (which is probably why it didn't get my attention years ago) but I had it shipped from the US and was surprised by the cute tiny format the book comes in and by the fact that it's actually a signed edition! Even figuring in the shipping cost, that makes it kind of a steal!

Reading my lettered edition of COVEN. Easily Ed's best of those early novels, imo. It is kinda cool to handle the book. Just happy I managed to keep the mother-in-law from setting her glass of water on it!

Books read and recommended for May, 2012. Hardcover NEW = 1. The Triumvirate by Mary SanGiovanni from Thunderstorm Books. Very good ending to this trilogy. 2. Queen of Blood by Bryan Smith from Thunderstorm Books. Love it. 3. After the Fade by Ronald Malfi from Delirium Books. Malfi is consistently very good. 4. The Croning by Laird Barron from Night Shade Books. Disappointing. Uninteresting characters. I love everything he's written but this one. 5 Reign of Blood by Sandy DeLuca from Delirium Books. Sandy scored one with this. 6. After the Fade by Ronald Malfi from Delirium Books. Good stuff. 7. Lambs by Michael Louis Calvillo from DarkFuse. My least fav Calvillo to date but worth the read. 8. Westlake Soul by Rio Youers from ChiZine. One of the best novels of the past few years. 9. Shadows West by Joe R. Lansdale and John L. Lansdale from Subterranean Press. I don't like reading screenplays. 10. Red Town Lost by John Shupeck, Jr. from Necro Publications. Rough start but ended well. Paperback NEW = 11. Sisters by Brian Knight from Gallows Press. Great stuff. 12. Faint of Heart by Jeff Strand from Gallows Press. Exciting addition to Strands bibliography. 13. The Creek by Chris Hedges from Gallows Press. Emotional coming-of-age heavy hitter. Want more. 14. The Auctioneer by Joan Samson from Avon. Very creepy good read. 15. Infinity House by Shane McKenzie from Gallows Press. Will watch for more from him. 16. Stories for the End of the World by Eric Shapiro from Permuted Press. A must read. 17. Powerlines by Kurt Newton from Gallows Press. Intense and interesting story and characters. A page turner. Kurt is great. Digital 18. Death Moon by Sandy DeLuca from Darkside Digital. Good short story. Other Favorites = #1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17. Wow, kresby, that's some support! God bless ya! Last night I reread "The Hound" by Lovecraft and remembered why I've always considered it the ULTIMATE pulp horror story. Gonna read a story or two by William Hope Hodgeson tonight. Pretty cool old days stuff.

I finished two collections of Jeffrey Thomas last weekend: VOICES FROM PUNKTOWN and VOICES FROM HADES. Both had some outstanding stories but my absolute favorite was "The Dance of Ugghiutu" from VOICES FROM PUNKTOWN. Thomas has written some great Lovecraftian stuff (UNHOLY DIMENSIONS collects a bunch of it) and this ranks among the best. Now I've moved on to THE NIGHTRUNNERS by Lansdale. Great read so far (I wish Lansdale would do more supernatural horror, seeing how ridiculously good he is at it) but can somebody enlighten me what that is supposed to be on the paperback cover?

I finally read GAST!!! Killer!!! Awesome book!!! I loved it because it reminded me of all the road trips me and my dad used to take across Canada and the US. He's a big civil was buff so we used to hit all these cool civil war towns, and go through museums and things. As a result i pretty big interest in it too. I always wondereed what life would be like to live in one shut hole town to the next. Also while we were doing it, my young mind was always thinking about meeting some babes in all these small towns and layin some pipe. That bit about the Palanse Face... That's what I'm talkin about!!! Also read The Minotauress!!! This was badass!!! Ed, you GOTTA write some more Dicky and Balls. That stuff is just too good. I was reading it thinking, fuck man, this guys sayin all the cool shit I think about when im all bent about life but have never composed into a written work... Or wait, that was the Horn Cranker... I love the guy who shits on him for being married... I love that fucking guy!!! Read Haunter!!! Killer!!! I need to meet a chick like that lol Now I'm finishing Charlee Jacobs STILL. Who else has read this book, I'd like to get some thoughts on it...

I've been reading a lot of Laird Barron recently. One of the best of the New Lovecraftians and my favorite discovery this year so far. THE IMAGO SEQUENCE used to be out of print until about two weeks ago, with even the paperback release being sold for $1000+ on amazon. Not sure if anybody bought it for that much, I certainly went for the $7 kindle release and bid my time... While many of Barron's stories are great in and of themselves, it's fascinating to really dig into the lot of them and to realize he's building a mythos of his own. I'm almost ready to offer myself as provender to Old Leech! Other than that I've recently completed NEW CTHULHU: THE RECENT WEIRD, an anthology of Lovecraftian fiction written in the 21st century. The book as been criticised as being just a bunch of reprints from other anthologies but since this was my first anthology of this kind of fiction, it was almost all new material for me. A great way to discover new writers. And then there was Sarah Monette's THE BONE KEY, written as an homage to Lovecraft and M.R. James and detailing the encounters of an introverted museum archivist with the supernatural.

Currently reading Bentley Little's THE HAUNTED and Lee's WITCH WATER. Took me awhile to get to them once purchasing, but they've both been well worth the wait! Probably rereading THE RUNNING MAN after these. --Ryan H.
