I'm switching between reading Peaceable Kingdom (Ketchum) and House of Blood (Smyth). What I really want this holiday season is to be eyes deep in Ed! But I have to spread his works out so I don't start jonesing :n

Two Worlds and In Between: The Best of Caitlin R. Kiernan (Volume I)

Image

I've been a fan of Kiernan's books since reading THRESHOLD in 2003. One of the best wordsmiths working in the genre today and a great source for Lovecraftian horror. Stories like HOUSES UNDER THE SEA, TEARS SEVEN TIMES SALT, ANDROMEDA AMONG THE STONES or RIDING THE WHITE BULL would all be worth the price of this volume alone. Never mind that the book has 570 pages worth of them.

The signed/limited of Wolf's Hour by McCammon. Cannot believe I have never read this. It is an epic novel and quite simply amazing. Bob

I just finished The Contortionist's Handbook, by Clevenger. It was quite good, with a little bit of a Palahniuk vibe, but definitely a different author's personality driving it.

I finally read Survivor by JF Gonzalez. Really, really good if you haven't read it yet. I will be starting Laymon's Out Are The Lights tonight, which someone on this board suggested. I think Survivor was mentioned here, too. Lots of great suggestions here and I have not been disappointed once!

Family Tradition by Edward Lee & John Pelan

Image

For some reason Necro only reissued this as an "elyktronerkal" edition for something called a "kin-dayl" so I had to sit my ass down and read it on my 'puter! I would much prefer to read it on my peter but technolergy ain't advanced enough for that yet I guess!

This is how out of the loop I am: I never knew about Wolf's Hour nor the Keirnan collection; I MUST pick them up soon cos they're both outstanding writers. (In fact I just read a terrific Keirnan piece called "In The Water Works" in ST Joshi's American Supernatural Tales. I'm going to MD tomorrow and plan on reading (or I should say re-reading) "The Dunwich Horror." I NEVER get tired of it!

Take care, all of you!

Just started "The Griff" by Christopher Moore. Like breaking up the reading pile with quality graphic novels, and Moore is my favorite comedic author.

SKINZZ by Wrath James White. The man has turned himself into some kind of writing machine in the past few months, with new novels coming out left and right.

Image

Oh yeah, limited to 123 copies. White's books don't sell out as quickly as Ed's but I still expect this to be pretty rare pretty soon.

STARFISH by Peter Watts:

Image

I like to mix things up with a bit of science fiction every now and then and this is good stuff and pretty original, I think. How many science fiction novels are there that are set at the bottom of the ocean as opposed to outer space?

If anybody is curious, the full book (as well as its two sequels) can be downloaded for free on Mr. Watts' website:

Creekers by Ed Lee. Then I'm starting the Andrew Mayhem series.

27: I hope you like Creekers; damn, is that book really 18 years old? Jiminy! Konnie: doesn't matter which you read first 'cos Succubi and Incubi aren't connected. As I recall, I wrote the prologue for Incubi in the Ram's Head Tavern in Annapolis (while pining over a lost love!) and the first "Erik and Duke" scene in Succubi in the same bar. I hope you like it!

Best,
Edward Lee

Finishing Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill. Read the first half a long time ago but didn't finish it for some reason. I remember really liking it, so it was probably just one of those things when something odd came up and distracted me.

Just about to finish Horror Stories (26 tales) by Jack Kilborn. Really good stuff, some are short and sweet. He kind of reminds me of Ed Lee really, very few guys can make utter gross out :x and funny :lol work.

Then in the 'to read next' pile are Creekers and Witch Water. Not sure which to go for? :/

IRON COUNCIL by China Mieville.

Image

It took me years to pick up THE SCAR even though I adored PERDIDO STREET STATION and now it has taken me years again to pick up IRON COUNCIL even though I loved THE SCAR. Weird. Mieville is a writer (like Caitlin R. Kiernan or H.P. Lovecraft, for that matter) that makes you work a bit for your enjoyment. His books aren't something I can read offhandedly on the commute. Extremely rewarding, however, and they tend to stay with me for a long time. Just thinking back to what he pulled off with THE CITY & THE CITY blows my mind all over again.

Author:  Wetbones [ Tue Feb 28, 2012 2:34 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: What are you reading?

Took a break from Mieville's IRON COUNCIL when Ed's DUNWICH ROMANCE arrived, finished that over the weekend (it's a lot of fun!) and decided to delay going back to IRON COUNCIL until next weekend because I find Mieville reads best when you can go 150-200 pages a day. That's not something I can swing after 9 hours at work. So I picked Ryu Murakami's novel AUDITION out of my pile of books waiting to be read:

Image

I guess it's not altogether unlikely that a few people here have seen Takashi Miike's film adaptation from 1999. It took surprisingly long for the novel it was based on to get translated even though a number of Murakami's books had already been translated. I'm only halfway through and so far it seems Miike stuck very closely to the structure of the novel. The main difference, I guess, would be that the film set unwary viewers up for one hell of a rude awakening when things go where they go, playing it like standard drama/romance up to that point, whereas the novel includes a few warnings for the reader.

I AGREE THAT CARLTON MELLICKS APESHIT WAS GREAT. BUT IT WAS MY FIRST CARLTON MELLICK BOOK READ , AND HE'S NOT EQUALLED THAT BOOK WITH ANYTHING ELSE HE'S PUT OUT THAT I HAVE READ.APPALACHAN GALLAPAGOS, AND SCARY REDNECK INBRED HORRORS FROM WESTON OCHSE AND DAVID WHITMAN ARE EXCELLENT READS .(ESPECIALLY THE STORY WHERE JUDD AND HIS FRIENDS GO TO THE CIRCUS) JUST LIKE JOE LANSDALE THESE BOOKS HAD MY EYES GLUED TO THE PAGE AND HAD ME LAUGHING OUT LOUD QUITE A FEW TIMES.
GETTING READY TO READ THE PKD BOOK "THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE" (ABOUT LIFE IN THE US AFTER GERMANY AND JAPAN HAD WON WORLD WAR 2) SOUNDS INTERESTING.

IF LOOKING TO READ A BOOK UNLIKE ANYTHING ELSE THERE IS ALWAYS "THE TURNER DIARIES"

I DO NOT CARE WHAT ANYONE HAS TO SAY , THAT WAS A FUCKING EXCELLENT READ.

Post subject:  Re: What are you reading?

I am a huge Philip Kindred Dick fan. It's pretty cool when you find out what the "high castle" is. One of the funniest parts of this book is when the characters try to figure out what an alternate history would be if the allies won the war.......Hilarious. Aimed squarely at dipshits like Turtledove.
I recently took a look at what my first edition Dick hardcovers are worth. Wow. Gaining in price faster than any horror I own!
Might take a look at that Jack Kilborn (aka J. A, Konrath) Horror Stories. His novella with Jeff Strand SUCKERS was incredibly funny. Turned me into a Konrath fan. I imported a copy of Kilborn's horror novel from England. Wasn't impressed. However, these shorts sound interesting. He is a hell of a writer.
I just can't get into Mellick. There are a number of fun bizarro writers. To my mind, he ain't one of em.
