Do you happen to own any HPL signatures? One of these days, I'll HAVE to get one (pricey as they are.) Today I re-read "Colour Out of Space" on the bus on my way to the dentist, and I read it from a 1947 Avon pb. Man, HPL is even better when you're reading him on the old yellow paper and that got that "old book" aroma wafting up!

Best,
Edward Lee

The Transmigration of Timothy Archer by Philip K. Dick.

The guy never wrote a lot of normal stories but he really got deliciously weird after the Jesus Satellite fired that Pink Beam into his noggin!

Hey Wetbones!!!
How about that Vast Array Living Intelligence System!!!!! I love Philip Kindred Dick. He wrote what I want to read. A book would be dark, almost suicidal. Then would come a lightning bolt of light, truth and wisdom. There are not very many people reading Timothy Archer. Those last three novels don't take lightly to just anyone picking them up. I fucking love the end to Archer. Nobody does it better.
Does the name Wetbones come from the John Shirley novel? I think that book is great. A book that needs to get the hardcover treatment is his DRACULA IN LOVE. That's a fun read.

Post subject:  Re: What are you reading?

VALIS is my favorite PKD novel so far and THE DIVINE INVASION is very good as well. I still haven't read even a third of the man's books. Guy was prolific as hell.

My name does indeed com from John Shirley's brilliant horror novel and I'm a big fan of the guy. I've been hanging out on his website's MSG board (under a different name) for a decade now, which sort of blows my mind. It was among the first sites on these interwebs I was visiting regularily. Luckily John has plenty of new books coming out these days (he was talking about retiring from fiction writing a few years ago, out of frustration with the marketplace for midlist writers) but I agree that some of his older paperback originals would deserve reprinting and rediscovery. It's amazing that he wrote DRACULA IN LOVE when he was in his teens and got it published before he turned 20... There's no doubt his writing skills have greatly improved in the decades since but it's interesting how all the thematic elements he uses in his books and stories to this day are already very clearly in DRACULA IN LOVE. And goddamn, you just gotta love that giant vagina monster at the end!!

Right now I'm re-reading Lee's The Backwoods. Before that was Lee's Header from Sex, Drugs, and Power Tools. And before that was Richard Laymon's Beware.

I just recieved Lee's first edition (Necro version) of The Bighead so I'm going to be reading that next I suppose. Out of you here, which do you think has the better ending? Just curious.

Just how different are the endings? If possible, please answer this WITHOUT giving away anything, as I have yet to read the Bighead, though it's on my must read list.

This is totally weird. I have both editions and never thought to read the original Necro edition!!

I just got finished reading Mary Sangiovanni's The Hollower. It was a good read, but a little slow. I saw that there is a sequel to the book called "Found You", (which I had bought without realizing it was a sequel to the Hollower. I bought it cause the cover was cool.) but I'll hold off for now and read something else.

Post subject:  Re: What are you reading?

I recently started on two books after a period of not caring for anything I've read. "Dread in the Beast" by Charlee Jacob is my horror choice. I'm about halfway through it and I'm still not sure where it's going. Despite this I don't care. This book is incredible. Plus Ed Lee does a very nice introduction.

The second book I'm reading is "How to Be Idle: A Loafer's Manifesto" by Tom Hodgkinson. Included are some persuasive arguments on stepping away from our overworked culture for the sake of our sanity. It's helped me gain a different perspective on things and I've also become better at doing nothing.

Just finished reading Shifters, and Brides of the Impaler. It goes without saying that any Lee book is going to be a great read. As for other horror titles you may like, I would highly recommend Cows by Matthew Stokoe. It isn't the easiest book to find, and can be costly if you do find it, but definitely worth it if you can get your hands on it.

I actually just finished "High Life" by Matthew Stokoe. Great read, plus it's plenty disgusting. I'll definately check out "Cows" when I can afford it. Thanks.

Currently reading:

Ghosts/Aliens by Trey Hamburger

It's from the creator of Real Ultimate Power: The Official Ninja Book.

Both are good fun reads.

I re-read a bunch of M.R. James recently (check out "A View From A Hill"), Lovecraft's "The Outsider" and Ketchum OLD FLAMES--all excellent!

Later!

Halfway through Bryan Smith's Soultaker and so far, excellent; it's like a Lee book toned down a few notches (many notches) but a great read nonetheless. The influence of Mr. Lee is evident on every page and well worth picking up.

Finished The Nobody by Tom Piccirilli. Great story. Loved it.

Starting The Damned by WM Ollie.

Finding books to tide me over till The Haunter of the Threshold arrives. Most anticipated book this year by far.

Debating on picking up 2 new books: Hater by David Moody and The Rage Plague by Giangregorio. Before I spend some bucks on the hardcovers of these, has anyone read them to tell me if they're worth the money?

Actually, I read COWS several weeks ago and found it unique, well-done, introspective, and wonderfully grisly. Today I'm going to read, for the first time in YEARS, Fritz Lieber's "Smoke Ghost" and King's "Crouch End," both of which I recall being dynamite.

Hey all! I'm new to this site, and am amazingly happy and relieved to know that there are all these people out there who are into the same hard-core, twisted stuff I am! Bless you all!

Right now I am re-reading my whole book collection as I: a) haven't had the cash to but new ones, and b) am having a hard time finding new stuff by my fav. authors. :? I'm working on it tho! (Currently on Ch.3 of "The Backwoods"... great book btw!)

My fav. authors list is:

Edward Lee
Richard Laymon
Brian Keene
Tim Lebbon
David Moody
and I LOVE the "Hot Blood" series

If there are any suggestions anyone could give me regarding authors who are along the same vein, it would be greatly appreciated!

I am very excited to have found a venue to communicate with people who know what I am talking about when I say that I love hard-core horror! You'd be amazed how many people haven't even heard of any of my fav. authors! A travesty to say the least! And then when I try to explain what the books are about, they give me a very odd look, and I find myself having to explain my devotion. You should've seen it when I brought "The Bighead" to work and was reading it! One of my co-workers asked what it was about... I showed her the back cover... and I got that "look" again.... :roll

So, I say again... yay for all of you!

Just finished Stokoe's High Life. I'm actually amazed at just how much I enjoyed that book. I think I may have liked it better than Cows, but it's been quite a while since I've read it.

About halfway through Starship Troopers...though not quite sure how I feel about it yet.

Post subject:  Re: What are you reading?

I just finished SECRETS OF THE BONES by Teri A. Jacobs and am happy to report that she's grown by leaps and bounds since her debut novel THE VOID for Leisure. This book is some fucked up blasphemous shit and mind-blowingly well written.

I think I'll go back to re-reading Charlee Jacob's HAUNTER by way of SOMA (the joining of the two halves ceremony is one of my favorite parts of that book, even if it has little to do with the main storyline) and sampling more of her vampire fiction through INDIGO PEOPLE.

PS: I've recommended Mathhew Stokoe in the past and I agree that he's an excellent writer. Both COWS and HIGH LIFE are great reads. I wish he'd get cracking on another novel already!
