Just about to finish Horror Stories (26 tales) by Jack Kilborn. Really good stuff, some are short and sweet. He kind of reminds me of Ed Lee really, very few guys can make utter gross out and funny work.
Then in the 'to read next' pile are Creekers and Witch Water. Not sure which to go for?

IRON COUNCIL by China Mieville.
It took me years to pick up THE SCAR even though I adored PERDIDO STREET STATION and now it has taken me years again to pick up IRON COUNCIL even though I loved THE SCAR. Weird. Mieville is a writer (like Caitlin R. Kiernan or H.P. Lovecraft, for that matter) that makes you work a bit for your enjoyment. His books aren't something I can read offhandedly on the commute. Extremely rewarding, however, and they tend to stay with me for a long time. Just thinking back to what he pulled off with THE CITY & THE CITY blows my mind all over again.

Took a break from Mieville's IRON COUNCIL when Ed's DUNWICH ROMANCE arrived, finished that over the weekend (it's a lot of fun!) and decided to delay going back to IRON COUNCIL until next weekend because I find Mieville reads best when you can go 150-200 pages a day. That's not something I can swing after 9 hours at work. So I picked Ryu Murakami's novel AUDITION out of my pile of books waiting to be read:
I guess it's not altogether unlikely that a few people here have seen Takashi Miike's film adaptation from 1999. It took surprisingly long for the novel it was based on to get translated even though a number of Murakami's books had already been translated. I'm only halfway through and so far it seems Miike stuck very closely to the structure of the novel. The main difference, I guess, would be that the film set unwary viewers up for one hell of a rude awakening when things go where they go, playing it like standard drama/romance up to that point, whereas the novel includes a few warnings for the reader.
I AGREE THAT CARLTON MELLICKS APESHIT WAS GREAT. BUT IT WAS MY FIRST CARLTON MELLICK BOOK READ , AND HE'S NOT EQUALLED THAT BOOK WITH ANYTHING ELSE HE'S PUT OUT THAT I HAVE READ.APPALACHAN GALLAPAGOS, AND SCARY REDNECK INBRED HORRORS FROM WESTON OCHSE AND DAVID WHITMAN ARE EXCELLENT READS .(ESPECIALLY THE STORY WHERE JUDD AND HIS FRIENDS GO TO THE CIRCUS) JUST LIKE JOE LANSDALE THESE BOOKS HAD MY EYES GLUED TO THE PAGE AND HAD ME LAUGHING OUT LOUD QUITE A FEW TIMES. GETTING READY TO READ THE PKD BOOK "THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE" (ABOUT LIFE IN THE US AFTER GERMANY AND JAPAN HAD WON WORLD WAR 2) SOUNDS INTERESTING.
IF LOOKING TO READ A BOOK UNLIKE ANYTHING ELSE THERE IS ALWAYS "THE TURNER DIARIES"
I DO NOT CARE WHAT ANYONE HAS TO SAY , THAT WAS A FUCKING EXCELLENT READ.
I am a huge Philip Kindred Dick fan. It's pretty cool when you find out what the "high castle" is. One of the funniest parts of this book is when the characters try to figure out what an alternate history would be if the allies won the war.......Hilarious. Aimed squarely at dipshits like Turtledove. I recently took a look at what my first edition Dick hardcovers are worth. Wow. Gaining in price faster than any horror I own! Might take a look at that Jack Kilborn (aka J. A, Konrath) Horror Stories. His novella with Jeff Strand SUCKERS was incredibly funny. Turned me into a Konrath fan. I imported a copy of Kilborn's horror novel from England. Wasn't impressed. However, these shorts sound interesting. He is a hell of a writer. I just can't get into Mellick. There are a number of fun bizarro writers. To my mind, he ain't one of em.
Wetbones: i wasn't aware Audition was first a novel. I'll have to check it out cos I'm dying to see the author's prose mechanics and how they compare to the images in the film. Dutch, if you haven't already, check out Teratologist by me and Wrath; it's available pretty cheap on Kindle now and also trade paperback. His novel Succulent Prey is outstanding, like so much of his stuff. Later!

I loved Curran's Resurrection. I'm not a huge zombie fan, but this was one of the exceptions. Gave me the willies, so that was nice
I just started The Bighead, by the great Edward Lee. I'm a little ashamed that I haven't read it yet. It's been sitting on my shelf for a while, staring at me and waiting for the perfect time to draw me in. I took it with me to the dentist today. Several times I laughed out loud, and tried to fake cough to cover it up because people were looking at me funny (I'm very shy, and hate being noticed by people). I'm just biding my time now before my girls go to bed so I can dive back into it. Such fun!
I'm reading The Dunwich Romance now. Took a long break from reading but I'm on vacation now and this book will get me back on track again!

Stephen King's Dark Tower V: Wolves of the Calla
After spending the last couple years reading mostly extreme horror, I thought I'd take a break and read something more mainstream again, and also wanted to read my first epic fantasy. I am loving the series so far. Can't wait to see how it ends, even though the general consensus among die-hard King fans seems to be disappointment. I shall reserve judgment until I've read it myself.

Taking another read through King's On Writing, to get the wheels greased for taking a shot at scribbling something the Horrorworld story compilation. Next in line will be Brain Cheese Buffet, when that gets delivered any day now.

Demonizer,
Not to go too far OT, but what is the Horrorworld story compilation? I've written my first few stories recently but haven't submitted any to anyone yet. This sounds intriguing.
Just started to read Skinzz from Wrath James White. I have a feeling that this one is gonna kick some ass.

My girlfriend gave me a complete collection of Poe's fiction and verse; I thought I'd read it all a long time ago, but found a story called The Oval Portrait. Very high creep factor!
JOHN DIES AT THE END. David Wong. Heard about it for year. Had to pick it up. Still reading, but it has dropped off in quality from the fantastic first thirty or so pages.

Stuff I've enjoyed recently:
Zombie apocalypse with a vampire anti-hero escorting survivors in exchange for food.
This guy seems to be new and this was a great fun romp. Ed Lee fans might like it. Features rednecks, a hick town and a great character by the name of Fat Ernst.
I'm loving Jeffrey Thomas now. These were both great books, Monstrocity is a Lovecraftian story.
Pretty much exactly the same as the Hellraiser movie. I was hoping it would be less so.
Disappointed with:
I've been a Curran fan for a couple of years now and after Dead Sea, Biohazard, Hive and Skin Medicine I thought he could hardly do any wrong. Recent releases have had overkill in repetitive descriptions, culminating in Graveworm which is pretty poor stuff, aside from a few pages of classic Curran dialogue. The familiar premise of the protagonist being blackmailed or coerced into criminal or dangerous deeds is promised but barely explored. Instead Curran wastes pages upon pages repetitively describing how the protagonist feels about it and how much various stuff stinks of rot. I was looking forward to Curran's take on this idea as I'd enjoyed it Richard Laymon's In the Dark and Ted Dekker's Thr3e. I'm left wondering if Curran has lost his edge.
Reading right now:
So far this has a brisker pace than The Great and Secret Show, to which it is a sequel.

Just received Christopher Moore's book Sacre Bleu from Amazon. It'll be interesting to see how he builds humor around French painters in Van Gogh's era, but he's done it with nearly every other scenario up to now, so I have faith.

GALACTIC POT-HEALER by Philip K. Dick. I read MARTIAN TIME SLIP before this one and found it to be one of Dick's lesser works. POT-HEALER, however, is a lot of fun. It reminds me of Kurt Vonnegut at times. Also, Philip K. Dick and Edward Lee are the only two writers I am familiar with who can bust out a discussion of Immanuel Kant's theory of perception and the "thing-in-itself" in a genre context.

I've only read A Scanner Darkly by Dick but it was great, especially when perception of reality started to shift. not sure where to go for my next Dick read. Was thinking Ubik.

You can't go wrong with UBIK. That's a classic. If I remember correctly, that was my second PKD novel as well, the first having been DO ANDROIDS DREAM OF ELECTRIC SHEEP.
