Richard Laymon
Hey guys and gals, I need some help. I've read a few Laymon books but I'm ashamed to say I'm not very familiar with his work but I want that to change. I wanted to know what are his best books. I've read the Beast House books and enjoyed them. I've also read some of the later Leisure Horror books of his (The Woods Are Dark and Beware) I love short stories so I'm thinking of buying his Dreadful Tales collection. But what books do you think I should start with and maybe what are a few I should avoid?

Love Richard Laymon. Read a ton of his books and feel like I still haven't made a dent in his bibliography.
Some that I loved:
One Rainy Night - Black rain is turning people into raving psychotic killers! Fast paced, fun, gorey book.
Resurrection Dreams - The nerd that everyone picks on tries to bring a corpse back to life with a car battery for science fair! Years later he actually succeeds! Really fun story. Lots of black humor.
Bite - A guys ex girlfriend shows up and asks him to kill a vampire thats been coming to her at night and feeding on her. He does to find the vampire has fake metal fangs. The story then follows them on their road trip to dispose of the body as they are stalked by another psycho. Super fast paced thrill ride. Has a similar feel to the movie The Hitcher.
Night In The Lonesome October - Follows a college kid as he goes out on middle of the night walks and all the strangeness he encounters. This book oozes atmosphere.
After Midnight - A girl accidentally kills what she thoughts was an intruder with a sword. As she tries to cover he tracks things get worse. A bloody comedy of errors.
And I didn't like:
Come Out Tonight - Girls boyfriend leaves to go get condoms and doesn't return. She goes to find him and things get weird. The first third of the book was excellent. The second part was terrible. The story shifts focus and I really hated where the whole second half went.
Among The Missing - All I remember is that it felt like a soap opera with who was sleeping with who with a couple murders thrown in.
So thats just my opinion on a few books. Happy reading!
Thank you! This is exactly what I was looking for, very helpful!

Laymon is a joy to discover. He was a true master of horror. That said, he wrote some clunkers, for sure. Stuff I loved: The Stake (his best book, in my opinion) Endless Night (2nd best, IMO) One Rainy Night Flesh In The Dark Quake
Stuff I didn't like: Come Out Tonight (terrible rape fantasy) The Lake (unfinished novel pieced together and sold after his death) Darkness, Tell Us Body Rides (great premise, bad novel) All Hallow's Eve Into The Fire (same as the lake) Night In The Lonesome October (gets alot of praise because it was published right after his death, but I thought it stunk)
I've read almost ever book he wrote and I've never read a Laymon book I didn't like. Even the ones that weren't up to his usual standards (Friday night in the beast house, Among the Missing, The Lake) were still enjoyable. Savage is really, really good and probably his most adventurous book. Before Leisure started reissuing his books, I was buying them from Headline in the U.K. . There are a few that had different names when they first came out that Leisure changed. Triage is a collectible as Ketchum and Lee also contributed stories. Cuts is also very collectible if you can snag an original. The two versions of In the Woods are a blast to read back to back because the original published version I have from Headline is drastically different than Leisures re-issue of what Laymon originally wrote. In fact, his daughter Kelly spent a lot of time finding all of the original pages to make the book complete. That book is fucking demented! Fiends is another collection that proceeds Leisures collection. Happy reading!
