Loved the book. And I loved the character of Jack. The dialogue was hilarious, but that's actually one of my favourite elements of your books. Especially in stories like The Horn Cranker and The Chosen. The Horn Cranker had me saying things like "fuck YES, that's what I'm talking about" the whole time.
The Aorists...
Are they real, or did you make up that whole mythology? Was there possibly a group that they were based on? Either way, it was super cool. I looked up Aorists online and only found the term related to the denoting of verbs in certain languages, Greek being one.
I liked the book a lot. Man you nail it with all of the police procedural stuff, like in Portrait and Dahmers, which I read a few months ago. That must have been tough to do back when there was no Internet like there is now, but it makes me think that you knew some people working in law enforcement who gave you some of the low down on the tools and procedures... Elizabeth Steffen I'm sure was a help as well.
What a great question! However, the answer will likely be a disappointment: I made the whole thing up! I dimly recall needing a name for my cult; I looked down at my open dictionary and saw the word "aorist", which I'd never heard of. but the word looked cool so I read the definition and, if I rememebr right, it had its roots in Sanskrit and had something to do with imperative verb modes that described past actions that went on continuously i.e. without end. I liked the "without end" part, denoting the aorists' ancient past continuing into the future "without end." It sounded good enough to me so I used it. In Succubi, the Ur-Locs, my next invented cult, were made up as well but there was some kindship to the letters I used and some pre-druidic tribe I'd read about somewhere. Can't remember the tribe's name but asI recall, it had a lousy ring to it. It's great to be a novelist--you can make up any B.S. you want!
Wow, that's supercool Ed. Thanks for the info. I loved the idea of that group, and I like it even more knowing that it was completely made up. It was pretty freaking hardcore to think there was a group doing the shit you described in that book, though I'm sure somewhere such a group has existed, or does exist, somewhere.
