Jack, I am sorry if the digital age has affected your livelihood. I truly mean that. But you saying "back when folks used to read books instead of collecting them for 99c", that's kinda of ridiculous. Even before the amazon or ebay days, I still went to used book stores and bought paperbacks because I read at least an hour or two every day. I read at work. I read on vacation. I read on smoke breaks at parties. You get the point. Why would anyone in their right mind give up reading and wait for collectible special editions and then trash the book at work or at a friends house or even at the local pub with smoke drifting everywhere? I read over a hundred books a year. I've read every single book on my kindle. I've read every single paperback I have. I still buy the expensive editions of my favorites. Edward Lee and Jack Ketchum. I'll buy J.F and Wrath when I have the money. And when guys like you spread the good word and have new stuff for us to buy, I check it out. It's positive, not negative.
You boys are both cool... Ya wanna know why, because your arguing about books. I hear what Jacks saying though, he's saying that ebooks, aside from making things widely available to people who can't look up from their tablets, and iPhones, and couldn't care less about actually walking into a bookstore and checking out some real books, suck balls, and do a story ZERO justice....but I also hear you Splatterhead. By real, I mean the yellowed pages, that old book smell, and some blotches on the inside cover that look like some guy wiped his ass with it while taking a shit. I used to scour those used isles up and down, before I knew about this scene. Those paper backs are still on the shelf, but man, these hardbacks are where it's at now. Im just disappointed that it took me so long to find out about these authors... But I'm going on four years now, and thanks to jizzlefingers and a bunch of other kick ass dudes, I have about seven whole shelves just dripping with Lee, Wrath, Ketchum, Jacob, Gonzalez, Clegg, Piccirilli, Stokoe, Curran and whoever the hell else. I feel so proud that I have these books. They actually fuel my life man, like I can taste these stories in the back of my throat, and in my gut reminding me how lucky I am as I carry on through my day.
I remember I read Off Season, from a used book store in Vancouver, when I was 17, 13 years ago. Then the Girl Next Door. Those books did it for me man, like Stephen Kings IT. After that, aaaaaaallll true crime. I don't don't know what the hell happened... Why didn't I delve deeper? I'll tell you why, I didn't have Internet, and after I finally got hooked up in the shit hole town I lived in, I was already neck deep in classics, reading weird stuff like La Bas, 120 Days of Sodom, and anything to do with ritual killings and satan. Lovecraft kicked ass, but none of it really packed the punch I was looking for, that hard "Gutter Fucking" content. So that stuff got boring too, and I gave up on the fiction reading scene. All crime there after. About six years later, I discovered LEE... And man, that's when the landslide of horror immersed my ass in one amazing story after the other. I was in a little dishevelled motel in Arizona with a copy of Header 2, and I don't think I've ever experienced more joy from reading a goddamn book in my life. I was laying by the pool, rolling with laughter, I couldn't fucking believe what I was holding in my hands. "Whose this Lee guy?" "Why haven't I tapped into this yet, after all this time" "How many books does he have? Like, fifty or sixty? What the hell?" Re reading that book is like re entering a portal into another world for me. That was the day my interest in reading horror was re invigorated.
I appreciate all kinds of books.... Classics, whatever... Shit, I even read Moby Dick, but when it comes down to it, I like to read things of a far more heavy and sinister nature, I like to read about serial killers, and perverts, underground porn rings, mutilation shows, snuff films, cults, twisted backwoods people, etc... and most of all... Rednecks.
But it has to be done right, because in still appreciate good writing, and would re read the The Great Gadsby or Swan Song before I credited some guy for writing about zombies shooting maggots out of their cocks. Every Lee novel I read blows me away, not just by its content, but how amazing the characters are. Not only can I relate to them, I feel like I know them, because their depicted so well. And the various story lines are so effectively woven together. It all links, every time, and I'm just left blown away. His dialogue is the best I've ever seen, hands down. And the shit these characters talk about take the words right out of my mouth. The Horn Cranker, amazing. Best dialogue ever. That scene were their sitting at the bar, oh man, I re read that like.... Three times, or something. And the cops in the car, funniest scenario ever. EVER!!!
Every time I read a book by Lee, I'm confounded with a faint embarrassment, that it was written 10-20 years ago, and I never knew it.
But that's why this small press scene is so kick ass. It does it the way it's meant to be done. No holding back. And for guys like me, it gives us inspiration to pen our own messed up stuff. Moby Dick is alright, but it doesn't make me want to write, or keep my ass in that seat but Succulent Prey, Population Zero, Genital Grinder, Survivor, and anything by Lee does.
And guys like you two, well damn, you'se bad ass as all hell, seein as your into this stuff too, books I mean.
And, yeah. I wish the forums were more lively. I suppose I haven't helped things lately, but maybe the golden age isn't gone, maybe we can all just post more and make this more of a interactive place to go.
I can't wait to hit a convention where Lee, Wrath, Gonzalez and Ketchum are there... Even one, or two of those guys would be amazing for me.
Being in Australia for school kinda sucks in that way... No good cons here. Only two more months though. Maybe I'll even meet you fine lads one day.
Nice scenery though, As I write this I'm sitting on the tip of the opera house landing, with a hardback of Gonzalez's Back From the Dead. Deadly book, makes me think of the Dnepropetrovsk maniacs.

Goddamn DecayedFace, what a sterling post. You just smacked the shit out of all types of nails heads there, I love hearing folkses stories about how they first stumbled into the genre. Like you I do step out and read around, but once you read some of that good Ed Lee shit or a nice bit of Wrath, going back to mainstream just ain't the same. I've been trying all sorts of new authors lately and while they are good in their own right if I read a book that ain't filled up with all sorts of sexual degredation and ultra hardcore sick shit I can't help but feel a bit let down, well maybe let down is not the right turn of phrase, maybe unfulfilled is more like it.
As for Splatterhead, I hear what you say and I acknowledge it... but do you know how rare you is? So I'm sticking with what I said because you are an exception to the rule, I told you that you was special and there's some validation on that motherfucker. While I may have made a sweeping statement about the general average Joe public there are a few folks that love the books, and have several different versions of the same books cause they be the rare shining examples of true bibliophiles. But small press is an endangered species. Just before the Ebook 'phenomenom' small press was doing great, there were tons of books coming out all over the fucking place and new presses popping up trying their hand at getting stuff going, but then the economy took a nose dive, leisure books shit the bed, the horrormall cast all their patrons to the four fucking winds and Ebooks came on the scene. All that shit played a factor in small press shrinking like a fat guys penis getting hosed down outside with freezing water on a cold winters fucking day in Nebraska. Then some paperback guys stepped in and started publishing many of the authors straight into paperback and ebook which folks started getting used to, which is great for authors and readers alike cause there's some money floating around, but it's hard for a small press to compete when they are coming late to the party bringing a pretty looking limited edition all dressed up when folks are already sated and she ends up sitting in a corner all alone gathering dust feeling dejected.
Sure guys like you might take her home and give her a spin, but for the most part she's withering like an old crone. See it's ain't even about my livelihood, cause I addapted awhile back and found a few other things to make my ends meet while propping up the horror books I buy in. If all the small presses were to give up the ghost tomorrow I'd get by just fine... but the world would be a darker hollower less shiny place to be. See I have very few facts or figures to throw around and most of the shit I say is based on observation and feelings but I've been right before cause sometimes I see shit that no one else sees or wants folks to ignore, and I'd like nothing better than to be wrong but I seen some fucker writing on the wall and I don't care for what it says.
See bare with me here cause I'm so full of coffee I'm feeling a tad strange so I'll try not to spout shit and keep things coherent. Is small press really that important to the futre of horror? Not really, not anymore I mean lets be honest. Back before Deadite and Ebooks and all that stuff yes it was but now? I don't think it is. See the coolest thing about small press was that it was small, big enough for other folks to take note of it cause it was something all the cool kids were in on and more often than not a fair few of the authors that started out there got picked up and spread around. And while the paperback guys were going through the motions publishing paperbacks of the older books small press was plowing ahead bringing out the new shit, so the cool kids were out there reading the new shit dancing with their prom queen limited edition. Then something happened and the paperback guys caught up and ended up getting ahead. And now we are at a point in time where the Prom queen edition is coming out when the slut and whore editions have already made the rounds. I mean I seen some pre-order limited editions go up for books that were already released and the numbers were horrible.
But turn that fucker around and small press can thrive again. See I got an example, maybe not the best example but it should do. Take 4AM by Keene, sure it was only a $12 chapbook but it's a good example to show that a small press title can sell out when it's not competing with a general release at the same time. Yeah Yeah I know Keene is a sure fire sell out at the best of times, I told you it wasn't the best example but there ain't many others to choose from right now.
So what was I saying? That's right, you are an exception to the rule. Ballsack is another, he appreciates a prom queen even after he's gone with the sluts and whore. And I'm sure there are a few more on the forum as it's a good place for the folks that hang out with prom queens to come and show off their conquests. But for the most part a nut is a nut and the majority of folks would settle for a slut edition or a whore edition and lets not forget the good old torrent rapists edition that ebooks have ushered in.
Shit did I just make a post there with foresight and insight, perspective and vision? I think I did, check me out! Woot!?!
My preferred method is to get prom queen, buy her a nice mylar dress and put her on my shelf. I take her down now and again to smell her pussy, but other than that she stays put. I gutterfuck the slut I bought for pennies and treat her like the dirty cumdumpster she is, get her all banged up so not even the dirtiest low down John, complete with a comb over and dick warts would have an interest in spending his hard earned change on her stinky ass, not even for a quick blow. The prom queen watches this and is quite pleased as I make that dirty county slut eat the corn nibblets off my bibliophilic dick. When I prop that little whore up next to the queen, sopping wet font with big hand prints and a tire sized gaping word processed anus, she laughs. Me and the prom queen laugh together every time I take gutter slut down again and let my buddies have a prod at her tight font. But they ALWAYS get sloppy seconds, and never ever do they get to fuck the queen... Unless they get their own, that is, which they are starting to do more and more.
"Thanks Erik, for the informative review. I've been contemplating picking up this book. Sounds like Edward Lee put some bold finger prints in this one. That being said, I'm sold!"
That's one! My work here is done. Just kidding. I won't stop until Ed and the rest are household names.
Erik
