I am ashamed to admit it, but I don't think I had ever read Lee's THE CHOSEN before. How is that possible? I have the hardcover Britain edition - hard gore press ? - and am reading it now. Anyway, I am really impressed with it thus far! Quite subtle with great characterization. Love it!

On another note, watched 2 movies yesterday that I wanted to express opinions on...

#1 - Happiness

This film has some great actors in it for being one of the most disturbing films I have ever seen. Lara Flynn Boyle, Dylan Baker, Philip Seymour Hoffman are just a few. It contains very intense, shocking language (some from a child actor), and the subject matter is extremely taboo. That being said, I think it is a masterpiece. The writer and director really knew what he was doing when he wrote this characters. The performances were amazing, and it is off the charts with my not being able to take my eyes off the screen. Very intense and I may not watch it again, but I am telling you, you MUST watch this film at least once.

#2 - Human Centipede Part 2

Ugh. I was not a big fan of the first film. I liked the concept, but the execution left a lot to be desired. I didn't feel for the characters, and it was poorly written. Part 2 was even worse. I have been researching reviews, and I am surprised by some critics giving it a favorable review. To me, the acting was atrocious, the story was ridiculous, the characterization was nowhere to be found, and the gore was in place for shock value only. What a horrible film.

I agree with you 100% on both of these films.

Happiness is indeed one of the most disturbing films ever, yet one of the most powerful and well-acted ones too. I think it's kind of a miracle that this film was able to get such top-notch talent on board, considering the subject matter. Todd Solondz is one talented director. I've seen three or four of his films and they're all kind of hypnotically enthralling, yet deeply disturbing in a more profound way than any shocksploitation flick.

I think both Human Centipede movies were pretty terrible. Shocking films with over-the-top gore can be great if there is more to them than that, but with the HC films that's all there is. Boring. Boring. Boring.

I haven't seen Happiness; I'll have to get it on my To Watch List. As for Human Centipede, call it sour grapes, but I think Edward Lee did the excretory-exit-surgically-attached-to-mouth thing much more coherently in "The McCrath Model SS40-C, Series S"! I enjoyed the Doctor character in HC1 very much (Dieter LAser, or something like that, who played Mantred in Lexx) and enjoyed the creepy b&w aridness of HC2, but that's about it. There are some many things the director didn't do in HC2 that I was waylaid. Fine. I'll do em myself! I am curious about HC3, though.

Best

Some of my favorite movies were made by Paul Verhoeven. Dick Mass (sp?) also had a good elevator movie which he remade for English countries. I remember liking both movies. I actually like more foreign films than I do US films. US films are generally lazy unless you come across a great underground indie.

Paul Verhoeven is very famous in the Netherlands.
He made Turkisch delight (Turks Fruit), Soldier of Orange and Spetters (wich was very critized because the sex and violence including a very rough gay rape in an abandoned station).
He also made ofcourse Robocop and the highly underrated Flesh and Blood.

Dick Maas made De Lift wich you mentioned and Amsterdamned wich is in my opinion his best movie.
It has a speedboat chase through the canals of AMsterdam of almost 15 minutes covering every canal.
HE also made another Horrormovie called Sint (Saint).
Very much fun and gore.

Dutchgorelover. I'll have to check out Amsterdamned. As for Paul, I've only seen his american movies like Total Recall, Starship Troopers, Hollow Man, Robocop and of course the most famous NC-17 movie ever released in America, Showgirls.

Believe me, his dutch films are far more controversial than his American movies.
Spetters was the reason he moved to the USA and made Robocop.
Showgirls is nothing compared to the above with all the sex and violence, full frontal nudity male and female and a daring see all gay rape.
Amsterdamned is a supurb thriller action ride.
Ending is a bit lame, but overall 4.5 out of 5 *.
