I am shocked at the news of Rick Hautala's death. He died today of a heart attack. Man, I can't even write straight right now so I wont even try. All I wanted to do was make everyone aware of this news. Please go to his website www.rickhautala.com for more information. I miss ya, Rick, and thanks for all the advice and friendship.
I just heard last night about Rick Hautala. He was one of the cornerstones of mass market horror since way back when (early 80s) when I was just getting my feet wet in this business. I didn't know Rick very well personally; I'd met him years ago at an HWA con and then had the wonderful opportunity of talking with him at length at Necon a while back. (We both traded some great Zebra stories!) It a nutshell, he was a great guy, a high-caliber, high character dude, and the genre is truly at a loss. I remember the first book of his I read (Moon-Bog, I believe the title was) and it was so well-laid out and so rich with atmosphere that I was floored by it. I'll pray for his eternal soul. All this death in the genre lately (Rick, David Silva, and James Herbert) really puts thing into perspective. May Rick rest in peace, and may God bless his loved ones.
