Just to keep you posted, it's been a grim couple of days. My mother, yesterday, was transported from the nursing home to the hospital with what turned out to be a blood clot and evidently a burst blood vessel which then lead to a "sepsis" infection. It was my disconsolate job, via her advanced health directive, to give the Do Not Resuscitate order and decline further treatment, initiating instead what they call a Medicate & Comfort order. This means that my mother will be given some manner of morphine derivative until she dies. I'll be back on the board soon. Please know how grateful I am for your prayers, support, and good wishes. Damn Ed, I'm so sorry. It's actually something different you've got going on here; not many authors open up their lives to friends and fans like you do, and it definintely shows who you are and makes you somewhat vunerable. Thanks for sharing, and know that my family will be thinking and praying for you during this time. I had my favorite Great Aunt (only extended family member I not only liked, but loved and never wanted to live without) who had DNR notes all over her condo. I mean EVERYWHERE. Trust me, it made it slightly easier for my mother knowing her wishes, but it was still a REALLY hard decision when the time came to actually make it. Know that you did well for your mother, did excellent AS a son, and take all the time you need. This stuff will always be here waiting. |

I'm so, so sorry to hear this. I can't imagine the weight of that decision; but in light of your dear mother's declining health, I'm sure it was the right one. You're a wonderful son and a wonderful author. I wish your mother safe and painless passage to whatever might come next. I hope you can find some measure of comfort and peace during this transition.
