Am a big fan of Ed, but have other favorite's 2.

Wrath James White (who i started reading by Jizzlefinger)
Bentley Little (thought he was the grossest until i learned the books from Lee)
James Herbert
Stephen King (his older books like IT (nr 1 favorite) and the Stand).
Mark Morris (really love his books)
CLive Barker
Richard Laymond
Peter Straub (although i consider him more Thriller than Horror).

Have you read Ramsey Campbell? He's my fave overall modern horror writer. It's not gross-out--though a lot of his imagery is so well conceived your own mind fills in the gross out with out Campbell being anything but covert. Especially check out his collection Scared Stiff!

I started with King and Koontz, then found Laymon and Clive Barker and now love Lee, Brian Keene, Bryan Smith, Wrath James White.

Laymon's Beast House stories and King's IT hold special places in my heart. Hope that the eventual remake of IT lives up to the book.

I think these authors helped to pave the way to Edward Lee glory!

Remaking IT? Shit I just hope they don't all hug and pull the giant spiders legs off with love again. That was 3 hours of awesome rounded up with 10 minutes of suck.
