Just got on here..Question for Ed Lee, Outlining a novel!!!
Hey everyone...My names Matt, I'm 28. Iv'e been eavesdropping on this board for quite a while, but could never get signed up, due to my email being a generally unaccepted .com...But thats all straightened out now... Glad to finally be able to get in on the conversations... maaaannn...That sucked haha.
Been a horror fanatic since I was born...Was raised on horror films and EC comics. They served as a substitute for a babysitter when I was a kid, as my father, being a single dad in a small hick town in Canada, found it easier to keep me proocupied with 7 movie for 7 dollars for 7 days. Since then Ive bought out all of thoes old mom and pop video stores (VHS) as well as amassed an insane collection of horror DVD's.
Some authors I like... H.P. Lovecraft, Franz Kafka, some Sade, Jack Ketchum, Michael Slade, Ramsey Campbell, Richard Laymon, Wrath James White, Matthew Stokoe, Charles Robert Maturin, Arthur Machen and... of course...EDWARD LEE!!!
Any suggestions of some really well written extreme shit...Shoot em my way!!!
Been an big Edward Lee fan for a while now, have almost everything on hardcover except about four or five books... Still need Header, Splatterpunk, Dunwich Romance and Witch Water. I have a special bond with Creekers...It has a sorta uncanny resemblance to my own life. When I read it I thought, "Holy shit!!! Thats the same shit that happened to me!!!" minus the getting framed for shooting a kid part haha...Oh yeah, and the moving back to my shit hole town part...AS IF!!! I fuckin love that story!!!
So anyways, I first just want to say, now that I am able too... My sincere deepest condolences with regards to your mother Edward Lee.
Now, I have a question...
I've heard you saying alot that you have your novels planned out before you write them...I was wondering to what extent??? Is it chapter by chapter or do you generally let the story unfold and your imagination run with it??? Your advice may help me in my particular situation.
-Matt

If you're looking for more extreme books check out APESHIT and ZOMBIES AND SHIT by Carlton Mellick III. Two of the craziest and strangest splatter novels ever written!

Welcome to the board. So you like extreme shit huh? I see you already know about Ketchum Wrath and Stokoe.
Hows about you try 'Suffer The Flesh' by Monica O'Rourke. Or pick up anything by Charlee Jacob, like Wetbones said, Soma is a real siction shitstorm. 'Survivor' by J. F. Gonzalez. 'The Summer I died' by Ryan C. Thomas. 'Spare Key' by R. Frederick Hamilton is fucking genius. There's a few rare games out there but those should keep you going for now.

I don't mean to blow my own horn but... some of my books are a bit extreme. Or so people say. You might like PIECEMEAL JUNE, SQUID PULP BLUES, KING SCRATCH, or FISTFUL OF FEET.
all of the previously mentioned authors are also very good. Charlee Jacob especially as well as R. Frederick Hamilton.
Yes, welcome to the board! And,man, if Creekers reminded you of aspects of your on life, you must have a VERY interesting life! My outlines vary quite a bit. Header 3 and several others already exist as screenplay (the ultimate outline!) but the rest are a process of ongoing notes, some quite long, others fairly short. I've been doing this so long, I suppose, that I think a lot of the outline process remains in my head, with certain key words in my written notes reminding me of what I'd orgiinally had in mind. Ultimately, everyone has their own way of outlining. In the old day I found the "scrapbooking" process quite useful: a stack of index cards for a particular novel and on each card is a plot point, character, event, image, etc., then before you start the novel you put them all on the floor and then arrange them chronologically. One bit of advice I can give you is thus: always carry a small notepad with you because the best ideas will always occur to you when you're farthest from your computer. Many's the time I jumped out of the shower to scribble something down, or dragged myself up out of bed at some wee hour, to write down a thought, for fear of forgetting it!
Oh man, thanks for getting back to me!!! And Edward lee, thanks for the advice on your process, I humbly appreciate it. I too have been jotting my ideas down on note pads, like you made mention too. I guess the confirmation of others, helps me in knowing that this is an actual method, rather than some sloppy means of organizing my thoughts. Besides, I too have been doing most of it in my head, but taking notes is a good way for me to remember the more technical details (re. Tech or Character elements).
Oh and yeah, the part in Creekers I was reffering too was when I moved back to the shithole town I was from for school (The only place near where this particular program was offered in Canada, go figure...Fuck!!) (Yeah, I was being sarcastic in my last post ha), just to realize that an old girlfreind (before I left), who was ALSO a bombshell (Like Vicky), had now died her hair RED (Like Vicky) and become a drug addicted prostitute (Basically like Vicky). Not a stripper like Vicky, but hey...Kinda similar. Not too sure if she was being pimped out by Creekers or not...Probably; most likely some kind of inbreeders haha... But anyways, she had major brain surgery in my absence, and the last time I saw her she was wearing a wig (NOT like Vicky!!!). But anyway, I love that book.
Serra, I presently live in southern Alberta. Moving to the West Coast oon, but for now, this dump is where I am. All people care about here is oil, its lame. How I'm here, I just dont know...well I do, but it's temporary. Vancouver most likely, but right now my options are open; moving out EAST would give me access to alot of places in the States I want to visit and potentially buy property at some point...Like in VIRGINIA for example!!!
I am very close to the mountains...VERY close!!! I just in fact got back from a work venture in Lake Louise, a place buried DEEP in the Canadian Rockies, surrounded by mountains higher than skyscrapers. The Hotel was immense, and it was snowing the entire time. Actually, we got SNOWED IN!!! Late at night I found myself wandering the hallways, through stairwells, and other such strange areas of the property. The place was really creepy, and as it was soo late, it felt like I was the only one there, dwarfed by it immensity. The whole time I was thinking about how similar of a situation it was to when Stephen King moved into the Stanley Hotel in Colorado and got inspired to write The Shining. Was looking at paintings, imagining them altering from day to day. Huge lake outside (Lake Louise), upper mountain and full of strange happenings. Had a clear view of the ledge the first man to die in recorded history in the Rockies, fell off in the early 1900's. With binoculars you could see his house he built on the very pinacle of a 2000 foot bluff...Impossible to access, unless you are good at climbing, or fly a helicopter...The Strange High House In The Mist you could say.
Came up with a nifty story of my own in the process, though it had nothing to do with the place I was at.
Oh yeah, while I was there I read Ever Nat...Loved it...Fucking HARSH!!! Felt kinda strange reading it while sharing a room with my WORK PARTNER, JESUS!!!
Jordan Krall...I would very much be interested in checking out what you have written, thank you for making me aware of your work...website??
Thank you for the comments, I am excited to be here conversing with like minds like all of you.
and my newest book TENTACLE DEATH TRIP is out. It's Death Race 2000 meets Lovecraft! It's published by Eraserhead Press (who also run Deadite). There's even a small character based on Lee!!!
DecayedFace: here's a case in point. The day after I posted my comments of the importance of having a notebook and pen with you at all times, I was at Tampa airport getting ready to return to MD. What happens? I get a GREAT story idea, but, lo, i didn't have a notepad to write on! So I ran to the gift shop, stood in line, paid, like SIX BUCKS for a pad and pen, immediately after which I forgot the idea.

Lee, at some point I'm gonna send you a copy of the book. Obviously I know you're busy so you might not get to it.. but maybe when things slow down, you can check out the part where Lee Basatan makes a cameo! (I might have to use him in another story!! He's so cool!)
