lee wrote the script for the slob novel with i think t. winter damon.
but it never went anywhere because rex miller didnt like the script.
the villan in miller's slob was a fat grotesque psycho called chaingang.
i always thought that a slasher film with a morbidley obese villan would be an instant cult classic and the guy in human ccentipede 2 completely reminds me of all those descriptions in miller's books about chaingang.
anybody else notice the similartys?

Not really, but I loved Slob and it's sequels. I didn't know Lee wrote a script for it.

I thought the first few pages of SLOB were absolutely perfect. Better than almost anything I had ever read. After that, to my mind, the quality dropped quickly. Hurriedly written, outrageous at times, but forgettable. I am interested in T. Winter-Damon's bio of Rex. Never have gotten a copy..........

read frenzy by rex miller that is also very powerful and over the top.
it dosnt have chaingang/slob in it, but its disturbing as all hell.
lee told me to read it like a year ago and he said the same thing.

I guess I'd never mentioned that before on the board but, yes, Rex did ask Damon and me to do a Slob script and I thought it was pretty good by the time we got to the final draft. But, as CR666 said, Rex didn't dig it overall. He did like the framework, as I recall, and some of the scenes. Damon and I were prefectly cool with the idea of Rex giving our script to someone else to use as an outline but I think Rex started having some health problems aroud that time, and the script died completely. I did, however, send it--through a contact--to someone in Hollywood who was a reader for Ridley Scott and she said it was characterized well but unacceptably violent. (Guess she didn't think the same for Hannibal!). As for Damon's bio of Rex--thanks for reminding me!--I may have several copies in storage. I'll check next time i'm in MD. Later!

I have read FRENZY.........Jack Eichord series. Appalling stuff, but hurriedly written with no resonance. Some authors...........some books by some authors.........strike deep chords. Give rise to feelings. Dread, awe, infinity......For instance I love Joseph Conrad's YOUTH. It gets me from all directions. His well regarded HEART OF DARKNESS does not hit me much at all. So I guess often enough this is a personal issue. What resonates, what doesn't.
I totally love Jim Thompson's last two books, CHILD OF RAGE and KING BLOOD. These two were written by a guy who loves writing and totally doesn't give a shit anymore. He was done with the world outside himself. He could not care less if they ever got published or not. After a pretty fucked up life, he just did what he wanted to. To my mind, this is the real deal. So I have managed to get into "discussions" (actually arguments) with Tom Piccirilli and other notables about relative worth of these books versus the more highly regarded THE KILLER INSIDE ME. Yeah, who knows. I am used to being in a minority.

I'm a big fan of KING BLOOD as well, though, as you know, I hate CHILD OF RAGE. I think it's presumptuous for you to say that Thompson wrote these latter books out of "love" and "didn't give a shit" about being published anymore (a working professional writer ALWAYS wants to be published and seeks success for his books). It's much more likely that the shifting mores of the late 60s/early 70s led him to change from his usually much more subtle (though violent) style to keep up with what he perceived to be a more open, sexually liberated, and racially charged time. And he had difficulty doing so. To this end, I think CoR suffers greatly.

Thompson also starred in the 1975 Robert Mitchum remake of FAREWELL MY LOVELY, so he certainly wasn't "done with the world outside himself." Hell, he was showing up on movie sets, how done could he be? (Though he was elderly and very ill he still showed up). At the time, guys like Robert Redford were trying to option his films and get filming off the ground. I think it's near-sighted to say he didn't care about publishing anymore.

Hey Tom! Glad to see you here! Still a lover, not a fighter!
Passion rules. You care about noir. The best stuff.
I am reading Phil Dick's VALIS again at the moment. Black comedy with a pink lightning bolt of love and grace.
Fight the good fight, Tom. And love the good love.

PKD rules! VALIS is a hell of a read. Really gives you a glimpse inside of PKD's head, to whatever extent that was possible.

Sorry to change the subject, but Tom's been a good friend of mine for years, and I've loved damn near everything I've read by him. One of my favorite's of his is A Lower Deep. He'd sent me a signed copy, and I was reading it on the bus one day, digging the hell out of it (I LOVE occult stuff in particular) but then this guy sees me reading it, says he's read other books by Tom but not A Lower Deep and asks to look at it. So I say sure, give it to him, then the driver announces a detour over the intercom or some such, which makes me realize I need the next stop or I'll miss my connection. So I get off the bus, it drives away, and only then do I realize I forgot to get A Lower Deep back from the dude. To top it all off, it was raining. Anyway, I was so engaged by the book that I blew off whatever errand I'd been on and went to Barnes and Noble to buy a new one. Never saw that guy again, until about a month ago but...what could I say? Anyway, if you haven't read A Lower Deep, check it out at once. It's totally cool!

A LOWER DEEP. That book sure deserves it's title! Waaay deeper than most people want to crawl! The more effort you put into it, the more you get out of it.....

I've mentioned before on here that I haven't been able to get into Pic's work despite a couple of attempts. But discussion here of A Lower Deep has rekindled my interest; I'll be looking out for a copy :D

Oh, I also forgot Hexes and Pentacle. These are work that demonstrate Tom at his supernatural best. Now, of course, he's not really doing much occult stuff anymore. But check out those two books if you get a chance.

Best,
Edward Lee
