I hope this is the right place to post my problem and that it will be noticed by Mr. Lee.

In June 2007 I preordered a signed copy of "Edward Lee's THE ORDER OF THE SCARLET NUNS - LIMITED" directly at the Overlook Connection Press, after they announced its publication in a newsletter. I placed this order with advance payment through paypal.

When I requested the status some months later, Dave Hinchberger from OCP told me the book would take some more time, which was fine by me, as I preordered other books before and was always content with OCP.

But then I received a newsletter from Cemetery Dance announcing "Brides of the Impaler" to be published soon. Of course I was totally confused by this announcement, as the book sounded too similar to Order of the Scarlet Nuns to be a different novel. I immediately contacted OCP to ask whether both book title and publisher had possibly changed, but I received no answer at that time.
Not knowing what to do, as I had already running an open order at OCP, I did not order Brides of the Impaler at Cemetery Dance, which I deeply regret now in hindsight.

Since then, I repeatedly emailed OCP to get an update on my order status or information that the book's publication was cancelled, in which case I kindly asked for a refund of the advance payment. Unfortunately, none of my emails was answered, and I am still waiting for any life sign from OCP. This is really strange, as I had no problems whatsoever with past orders and contacting OCP, Dave always replied very friendly within a couple of days. So my last guess is that in this case they deliberately ignore my requests, as they still send newsletters and the shop is still online, and I am really disappointed now.

My last idea was to make this situation known to Mr. Lee, as it concerns his work and maybe he can help to clarify things. I still hope this is only a large misunderstanding, as I really like(d) OCP and their books.

Thank you for your attention!

Misspider: wow, I'm sorry to hear about the foul up. Yes, Order of Scarlet Nuns was the original title for Brides of the Impaler. (The pb publishers wanted a different title cos they didn't like the "syllabic sequence" of the original, and I'm pretty sure I agree with them.) But, for whatever reason, the hc release of Impaler was plagued by delays. Now, it's out of print. I know Dave H. at Overlook personally and know that he wouldn't rip you off. He did have some personal stuff in his life take a lot of his time from the business.

I happen to have one extra copy of the Brides of the Impaler hc, which I'd be happy to give you for free. Send an email to me through Necro's website: he'll forward it to me. Include your mailing address, and if you want it inscribed, tell me the inscription. Just be patient cos I'm constantly on the move between FL and MD to tend to my mother's health problems, so it might take me a few weeks to get to. I hate it when the vagaries of the business cause fans not to get what they order in advance. In almost every case, I don't have extra copies to correct that problem, but this time, by fluke, I do.

So send that email through Necro, and I'll get the book to you. Thanks very much for your loyalty and suport!

Best,
Edward Lee

This is simply SO awesome, reading this reply really brought happy tears to my eyes :'-)

Honestly, I was not sure whether this post would have any effect (or what). It was kind of a last straw after all that time, and also a way to let off some steam and accept it, maybe get some comfort by other fans. I definitely never would have thought to get a personal reply by Mr. Lee, let alone such a great answer. Thank you so very much Mr. Lee! :-x

Hi

I didn't want to say anything but i preordered every single thing Edward Lee has ever put out, It was all signed to me personally and none of it ever showed up?

Edward Lee could you fix it?

Ha Ha it's worth a try.

It's great that you go to such length for fans. I have met and spoke to a few authors who really couldn't give a monkeys about us plebby readers (no names given).

Keep up the good work. :*

Thanks for the generous words, folks. It really sucks when something like this happens cos typically the author doesn't get many contributor copies. (Most immediately go to friends, agents, reviews, movie people) but this was a wonderful exception because CD gives more contrib hc copies than any other publisher I'm aware of. Plus, it's cool that the book is out of print now even though it came out a couple YEARS after the paperback!

Take care!
Edward Lee
PS--misspider, I mailed your package today. I'd appreciate it if you'd let me know when it has arrived. Thanks!

Take care!

How cool is this guy? Really. To not only resolve a nearly 5 year old standing order, but to also throw in a freebie? Makes me proud to call myself an Edward Lee fan. Wish there were more like you Ed.

Post subject:  Re: "Order of the Scarlet Nuns" at Overlook Connection Press

Back again from christmas holidays and reading the "Brides", which turned out to be both trick AND treat for me.

Good news first: I really enjoyed reading the book. I have read a lot of reviews (before and after reading it myself) saying it istoo incoherent, contains too much explicit sex scenes, and so on. So, before starting to read I was curious, hopeful, sceptic and afraid at the same time, and decided to put all those thoughts aside and simply "jump in" and let the book surprise me, which it really did.

I liked how the story takes its time to develop, giving new hints and details bit by bit without revealing too much, like in a puzzle where you can discover the image only after putting all pieces together. A great story with a very original take on the Dracula theme, definitely recommended.

Now here's the drawback, which is so bizarre it's really funny: after page 288, where Father Rollins and the officer (for some reason, I could never memorize his name) enter the basement room, I turned to the next (right) page and...read about both of them suddenly being in a hospital. Taking a look at the page numbers, I found myself continuing on page 305 - the pages in between were simply missing. At first I could not believe it, then I could not decide whether to laugh or cry. I mean - how likely is such a coincidence?

Fortunately, the book is also available as an ebook, so finally here it is : the happy ending to my odyssey starting 2007 with the intention to just read another book. The Brides will definitely hold a special place of honour on my bookshelf for all times!

Thank you again Mr. Lee for your generosity, but most of all for writing an excellent story!

Glad you finally got sorted.

Thats odd you should say you are pages missing, I remember not too long ago someone on here had the same issue with Going Monstering.

Brides is in my 'to Read pile'. Getting towards the end of Mangled Meat right now. :*

Misspider: oh my Lord! Missing pages? Wow, I'm really sorry, It's something that happens in the business very rarely, but I'm sorry it happened to you. But who knows? Maybe it's the only defective copy in the run and ill be worth big money some day!

Again, very sorry about that; I had no idea. But take care and thanks for your support

Best,
Edward Lee

Header 2 you could get away with reading before reading Header if you get your hands on a copy (either a mega bucks copy or wait for Deadite). The link really is family history and I think the way Ed wrote it, it more or less tells you what happened in Header in one of Header 2 chapters.

If you ain't got it, I would get Header 2, it is pure Redneck/Gangster/Mafia bliss. (If you have read The Pig/The House) there is a link there too.

I can't wait till Header 3 comes out, lord knows what those rednecks will be up this time.

It isn't strictly a Header story but runs that way 'You Are My Everything' is a great short header tale too. Well worth reading, again no order needed. And if you like Lee's Lovecraft work but love Headers too try 'Pages Torn From A Travel Journal'

I hope this helps

and Ed keep those Headers coming!

Misspider: thanks for your interest, and thanks to those who answered her questions. There's more headering on the way! I'm getting some mileage from such "head-abuse!" Wetbones: I WISH they'd do a blu ray; actually I just noticed that Synapse is doing blu rays now. But I suppose it's an expensive process. Next time I'm in contact with them I'll mention it.
