Post subject:  UPDATES...

Hi Everyone,

Yes, it’s been a while since my last update, so I thought I’d send along word about what’s been going on.

First and foremost, for now I will not be moving forward with my publisher Leisure Books. I’ve published five novels with them: ATMOSPHERE, DEEP IN THE DARKNESS, THE DEMONOLOGIST, DEAD SOULS, and FIRES RISING. I’ve written a sequel to my best selling DEEP IN THE DARKNESS, entitled RETURN TO DARKNESS, or ISOLATION. Not certain which title to use yet. That all depends on the publisher that picks it up. Of course I’d like to see my books in the stores, and really want to get RTD/ISOLATION into your hands. But…I also need to make some money for all my hard work. I’ve been doing this for 15 years now, and it’s no longer simply ‘fun’. It’s a second job, career, and it needs to put food on the table. I’m hoping that soon I’ll have news about a beautiful small press release for RTD/ISOLATION.

In other writing news, I’m currently writing an urban dark-fantasy novel with a Bram Stoker Award winning author, who for now shall remain nameless. It’s a fantastic novel, full of suspense, horror, and a bit of humor. We’re pitching this as a series of novels, and if it gets picked up, it should keep me busy for a few years. This is a project I have a lot of faith in, and look forward to updating you all to its progress.

As well, I’ve begun work on my first non-horror novel. Entitled MISSED CONNECTION, the novel is a thriller with elements of humor. Think Harlan Coben meets James Patterson meets Chuck Palahniuk, and you’ll have missed connection. I am really exciting about this book, and am going to start pitching it to the major publishers soon. Wish me luck.

Want a free magazine mailed to your home? My story SNAKES, which appeared in my collection DARK RIDE, has been published in the November issue of LONG ISLAND PULSE magazine. Go to http://www.lipulse.com, and click on the FREE ISSUE tab. Make sure you request November, 2008. Also…BorderlandsPress.com still has copies of DARK RIDE available. If you do not have a copy, head on over to the Borderlands website and check it out.

Looking for a good horror magazine to read? Check out SHROUD magazine at http://www.shroudmagazine.com.

That’s about it for now. If you have any questions, feel free to fire away!

I wish you luck with your future novels Michael, but I do have a question. Wouldn't you recieve more money from a Leisure release, which I would assume would be in the ten to twenty thousands copies sold range, than a small press release with only up to about 350 - 1,000 copies sold? Are my numbers off?

It seems strange that Leisure wouldn't pay you more and publish the sequel to Deep In The Darkness which I understand is your biggest seller to date, but continue to publish authors like Maynard And Simns who are too "old school" for a lot of readers tastes.

Hi TT,

The bottom line is that Leisure and myself could not come to terms for the next book. I really thought the Deep sequel would be a natural book for them, as DITD has sold very well. But publishing is a business, and they have to run it to suit their own terms, and not mine. I wish I could be more specific, this type of thing is something I have no control over.

Actually, a good small press deal can make me comparable dollars.

I understand your comments much better now after reading on another forum how Leisure operates.

I hope your next novel does extremely well Michael, a lot of us are pullling for you. We've followed and supported Tim Waggoner after he left Leisure am I'm sure we all will do the same with your work.

I will still be following you writing career closely and picking up any books that I can, Michael. I am sure that sooner or later, your name will be attached to a heavy-weight publishing house.

I picked up a copy of the Delirium hardcover The Demonologist this spring. I haven't read it yet. I remember reading your first book, Atmosphere, again from Delirium Books. Atmosphere was a blast! Good luck finding a small press publisher for Return To Darkness / Isolation.
