I finished To Each Their Darkness, this time without tears in my eyes as when I read its first incarnation. But the only reason for this is because I knew what to expect and I was prepared. I can say, like the advice Gary gives in the book, that reading a piece of work a second time often draws the curtain open wider, and then there is so much more to see. Thank you Gary, for sharing your thoughts and your life story. Tt |

Mine finally showed up yesterday (I don't blame Apex for the delay), and I finished the entire thing in the span between getting home from work monday evening and leaving for work tuesday morning. Great stuff, even if I already have Fear in a Handful of Dust. A nice volume, great work. Can't wait for the forthcoming novel, but I sincerely hope it comes in some kind of deluxe, signed edition for Gary fanatics like me. |

I've been reading To Each Their Darkness, and had to go listen to "The Rock" off the Quadrophenia album by The Who. What an amazing song! And this book is already gutwrenching. Man, I know saying I'm sorry doesn't help with the things you've described so far in this book, but nevertheless, I'm sorry. I almost feel bad about getting so much pleasure reading your books now, when I see the things that transpired to create those books. |

Craig: No need to apologize. None of the personal information offered was a ploy for sympathy. I was simply trying to illustrate how it's possible for a writer in any genre to re-shape something from their own lives and use it to add a richer layer of authenticity to their fiction. I'm actually quite flattered that you "enjoyed" reading about some of the not-nicer moments, and then were able to see how these events informed my fiction. Thank you for the kind words!

I've said elsewhere that I wished more authors wrote as well as Gary, but then I read Fear in a Handful of Dust. I realized that if that's what it takes to make a writer strike such powerful chords, maybe it's best everyone isn't that good. |

I read the last half of this book tonight; it was impossible for to put down. Some great advice, more heartwrenching moments, and of course, THE CHAIR. Oh my goodness, I was laughing so hard I was crying during that portion of farting the opening riff of Smoke on the Water.  And I have sort of an odd question, Gary. Is there a way to reach you to ask some questions or discuss a portion of this book that may not be suitable for the message board? |
