I went trolling this afternoon on a horror board that does not seem to be in operation anymore.

Since I didn't see any mention of In Silent Graves in Gary's forum here, I thought I would dig around at that now non-operating board and see if there were any comments on In Silent Graves. I found the following:

Gary Braunbeck's IN SILENT GRAVES
I am only halfway through with IN SILENT GRAVES, and must say that any of you who have children (I have two) will not be able to put this one down. Braunbeck writes with a true, unique literary style, and has managed in just under 79 pages to create one of the most unforgettable characters in recent memory (Robert Londrigan). This is the kind of high quality horror fiction that puts Leisure Books a step above the rest.

Now off to finish the thing...

Gary is quite simply one of the best writers working in the field today, and IN SILENT GRAVES is a fantastic novel (and he's a helluva mensch to boot!).

Author of Like Death, Pandora Drive, and Darkness Wakes from Leisure Books.

Praise is Deserved!
I cannot praise this book highly enough. I can honestly say this is the best fiction novel I have read in a very long time.

When it arrived and I read the back, I wondered whether to read it then or later. I was in a serious flare up of Fibromyalgia, was very depressed and the nature of death and impermanence was hitting me like a hammer. Could I handle a book where a man's wife and daughter die?

I was totally surprised. Where I thought it would be depressing, graphically disturbing, etc., it was the opposite. It was joyous and life affirming. I couldn't put it down.

Get this - I am on my 4th reading it! It is very rare that I will reread a novel like that, especially so close to having read it the first time.

Thank you, thank you Gary A. Braunbeck!

I finally finished the novel (that small type kills me, but it was worth the effort).

Braunbeck's novel is one of the most intelligent yarns that I've read since Barry Hoffman's BORN BAD. Pure genius. Check out (also) his short story in the 47th issue of CEMETERY DANCE.

I won't be forgetting this one for a long time.

I was reluctant to read it myself because my wife is 35 weeks pregnant and the subject matter obviously hit pretty close to home.

I'm glad I didn't postpone it. Awesome read.

I agree that it looked like it was going to be wholly depressing--and it was at the beginning. But the way it starts off really endears you to the main character. I don't think the rest of the book would have been all that believable unless you really cared about Robert.

I like anything that's offbeat or original, and this book definitely surprised me.

This book was super depressing and tragic, but it was great. Definitely a novel I'd label 'true horror'. The story was really complex on several levels and I enjoyed how it all worked out.

..and Coffin County continues the progression of this mythos. A fine novel that is building up to the finish of this series.

Holy shit, Adam -- I take that compliment with a bowed head and grateful heart -- it's quite something to discover that you've written someone's favorite novel. Humbling as hell. Thank you, kind sir -- and thanks to all the folks who said such lovely things about the novel -- deeply appreciated!

I will never forget when I read this for the first time. My wife was away in Colorado visiting family for over a week, and I was home alone with the kids. Even though the kids were there, at night the house was DEAD SILENT, my wife several states away, so reading a story like that, in a house alone...BRRRR! But so, so awesome.

This was such a powerful book. The scene where he sees his dead daughter on the couch and he sits there holding her about brought tears to my eyes. Amazing stuff indeed.

That book really affected me. Only Gary's Prodigal Blues has caused me more nightmares.

Its been awhile since I've read In Silent Graves. I gotta give that one another go.

I've never read a Braunbeck story I didn't like, but this was my first and is also my favourite novel ever, full-stop. I love it so much, in fact, that I ordered a copy of the original Indifference of Heaven hardcover, even with my paperback still in good condition. The only other book I've ever bought twice was Jack Ketchum's Peaceable Kingdom, and that time it was because I couldn't find my first copy. This is just the collector in me wanting the collector's edition.
