I just finished reading Far Dark Fields and while I enjoyed the book it left me with a number of questions. I was just going to bump the other thread but I figured I might garner a response faster this way so I created a new thread. Thanks for your help.
1: I understand that this is Cedar Hill Vol. 5 (that is I understand it now after the fact :P) What are the previous 4 novels, are they the other 4 Leisure titles? (I know Mr. Hands and Coffin County are)
2: Is Far Dark Fields going to be directly continued starting where it left off? I felt like I was only getting half of a story there.
3. Are the short stories as important in the understanding of FDF as the previous 4 novels? (I ask because I have the novels on my shelf that I can pick up at anytime but I'm poor and probably won't be able to pick up the collections for awhile)
Other than that Gary I really did enjoy Far Dark Fields adequate confusion and all. Your characters are all very intriguing and the scene at The Hangman where they are telling their personal stories was all the inspiration I needed to pick up the other novels and read them. My main concern is really that the story had no ending. Not that it had a bad ending because I really didn't see one at all just what I imagined to be a halfway point of sorts.
I also loved your story in 5 Strokes till Midnight.
Thanks again and keep it up Mr. Braunbeck.

Thanks for the help TT. I read a bunch of the other threads but I didn't read that one I'll go check it out now. Like I said before the other stuff wasn't all that confusing albeit very intriguing. The incomplete story had me a bit thrown off though. I know this probably has nothing to do with Gary's decisions but I find it to be horribly shady when a publisher doesn't let you know that what you're reading is only a small part of a bigger story in order to sell more books. This one could have at least ended with a to be continued in 2010 or something.
Thanks again.

Yes, the order is: In Silent Graves, Keeper, Mr. Hands, Coffin County, and Far Dark Fields. yes, the next novel will begin in exact same spot FDF ended, right there in the tunnel, in the dark.
In one way or another, all of the Cedar Hill short stories are important to the overall cycle, but only a handful are absolutely vital as far as new readers go, which is why Mr. Hands and Coffin County included a few of them, and why FDF has 2 of them integrated into the narrative itself; all the information in the short stories is going to tie into the conclusion of this part of the cycle. (For instance, the bodies buried beneath the Yacht Club on Cholera Island will be waking up to pay the town a visit, and the urn with the ashes on the the Hangman's shelf is also going to be playing a more direct role in things to come.)
I've said this before but it bears repeating: I really, really tried to get Leisure to allow me to put something about FDF being the first book in the concluding novels somewhere on either the cover or in the first pages of the book after the title page. Barring that, I asked to pit a To Be Continued right at the very end. Yes, the central conflict that served as the catalyst for Geoff's trip back to Cedar Hill was resolved, but a lot of threads have been left dangling. Based on some reviews I've read thus far, that fact is at least obvious to readers (though more annoying to some than to others).
As a result, I am going to create a special web page (the URL will be listed in the next novel) to which new readers can go to read a The Story So Far -type of recap.
This decision was based in part on everything that I told you above, but a lot of it was based on the fact that there will be 2, not 1 book to conclude things with. So that grand total for the Leisure books of the Cedar Hill Cycle will be 7, not 6. I refuse to rush things, and I will not leave the major themes unresolved or the minor themes unaddressed.
Does that answer all your questions? If there are more, please do post them here, and I'll be respond asap.

Thank you for your response Gary. First I want to say that I really did enjoy the book and I hope I wasn't being to critical. I only ask because your inconclusive book has intrigued me to dig up everything Cedar Hill that I possibly can. You did answer all the questions that I had asked thanks.
That being said I am looking forward to A Cracked and Broken Path. And if I am to understand you correctly this last Cedar Hill Story will be a trilogy or sorts? Do you have a tentative title for the 7th book?
Thanks again and keep it up.
