I just picked up COFFIN COUNTY and really can't wait to get started. Unfortunately, I haven't read any of the other Cedar Hill novels, and am a little worried that I'll be lost. Do the Cedar Hill novels have to be read in any particular order?
Sorry if this has already been answered in the forums. I wasn't able to find a discussion on it.
COFFIN COUNTY can be read as a stand-alone novel with only minimal confusion
I always recommend that folks read the books in order -- more and more of the previous books are beginning to spill over into the newer ones -- but I knew that COFFIN COUNTY might very well be picked up by folks who've never read any of the Cedar Hill work before, so I took care not to have too many "in" references.
Short answer again: you can read CC by itself. But if at all possible between now and next summer/early fall, if you can read the previous novels, that would be helpful, because the 5th Cedar Hill novel from Leisure, Far Dark Fields will require that the previous 4 books have been read.
Let me know whether or not you like Coffin County, will you? And thanks for buying it, as well!

Thanks. I just discovered that MR HANDS is one of the Cedar Hill novels. I didn't realize this. I read it first, without knowing of Cedar Hill, and didn't make the connection when I further researched the Cedar Hill collection. So, to correct my initial statement -- I am jumping into COFFIN COUNTY having read one of the previous three novels.
Well, there you go, then; you're one up. May I ask whether or not you liked MR. HANDS? (And please be honest; honest reader feedback is something I treasure.)

Thank you. Now that you've jogged my memory, I do remember your kind post about Mr. Hands -- but one can never thank one's readers enough; so, again, thank you!

Gary, can you explain the Cedar Hill books for me? I see one book called Home Before Dark that said it's The Collected Stories. Then I see two other books called Graveyard people, one of which says Vol 1, the other just says The Collected Stories but it has someone named Deena Holland as the author along with you and does not have a volume number.
Does one of these books in fact have all of the stories?
And, they seem to cost a lot of money, are they out of print? Are they hardcover? Will they be issued as a trade paperback soon now that you are getting so famous?
Graveyard People: The Collected Cedar Hill Stories, Volume 1 and
Home Before Dark: The Collected Cedar Hill Stories, Volume 2. Next year will see the release of the third and final collection, The Carnival Within: The Collected Cedar Hill Stories, Volume 3.
Deena Holland (now Deena Warner) is listed as co-author on some booksellers' sites because she did all of the extensive artwork contained in the books -- the covers, the interior illustrations (1 for each story), as well as the Visitors' Guide excerpted pages and the newspaper pages. There's a lot of artwork.
The books are priced as they are because they're hardcover, signed, limited editions from Earthling Publications.
When the 3rd collection comes out early next year, the 3 volumes will have collected a little over half of the total Cedar Hill stories -- but the 3 volumes will have collected the stories that serve as important benchmarks in the overall cycle.

Thank you both so much! I promise you that the books are worth the price, just from the standpoint of physical production alone. They've been a labor of love for Paul, Deena, and me.

Like UndeadGeek I have also recommended your books to my friends, not so much my family (they're more of true crime, but they might have a good time in Coffin County, I sure did) So far I got one person to read The Keepers (which they had to re-read because they skipped the flashbacks)But, overall they said that once they started they could not stop. I am also getting someone to read Mr. Hands, and to tell you the truth Gary, after all the different books by different authors I have read I still find myself going back to that book and believe me when I say that I've opened and read that book so many times it looks ancient. Also, on occations, I find myself going back into In Silent Graves (gotta love Rael).
I finished Coffin County over the weekend. What an amazing book. I love everything by Mr. Braunbeck. I'm especially looking forward to the rest of the story here on Horror World. Thank you Nancy and Gary!
I'm about eighty pages from finishing Coffin County. This is my first Gary Braunbeck novel, having only read We Now Pause for Station Identification prior. I usually read horror stories more for nostalgia because very few actually give me a scare anymore, they just have an atmosphere that I love. This one, though, had the atmosphere and had me totally creeped out a number of times. Not to post spoilers, but the way the old funeral procession near the beginning of the book was drawn, it had the flavor of the old 1800s ghost stories but the atmosphere created just totally blew me away. I really thought I was watching the thing parade through my living room. I won't list anymore, but there have been several other scenes that were that vivid, and I'm very pleased to have found an author that can not only create the atmosphere I love, but give me a couple of good jolts again.
Thank you for your comments about the novel -- and particularly about the funeral procesions. I was going for the feel of the old classic ghost stories from the 1800s, and I'm glad that it succeeded in your eyes!

I'm finishing up the last batch of new material for Paul, and am aiming to have it in his hands before the end of September, which means it will likely be a summer 2010 release. One of the reasons for the delay is that I need to triple-check that the continuity between the new material and the novels is correct. Another reason is that the health problems I've been experiencing this year have put me further behind than I like.

You health is way more important than getting these stories out. While we all are looking forward to more....we can certainly wait. I hope everything works out for you Gary!

Hi Gary,
I hope you're feeling okay these days.
I just wanted to let you know that I just read Coffin County. I read it as a stand alone book and I have to say that I enjoyed it very much. I had to pause for a while in the middle (life gets in the way) and I almost lost track of what was happening, but picked up again quickly. I love how the book unfolds, and I always appreciate how your stories are about MORE than so much else I read out there.
