That is the question.

This is the year of my 10th anniversary as a writer. I've spent the past decade spinning tales for anyone who would read them. As a self published print author of horror and thriller stories, I've enjoyed mild success with the books I've created, and the digital era of self publishing e-books has been kind to me as well.

I've always heard from others writers, to write what you know. So I did, but now I'm wondering if maybe I should add ghosts to my repertoire. With e-books filling digital devices faster than Carter's can make liver pills (if they still make liver pills), I'm finding that ghosts seem to be a more popular topic than others.

I've written three novels, put together 7 short story collections, and written two short stories, that I have for sale as e-books through Amazon's Kindle store, and Barnes & Noble's NOOK store. Two of the short story collections are ghost stories from the state I live in. Popular stories, that have been in existence probably as long as I have.

Those two collections are out selling every other book that I have available. Both have found new readers at an average of 10 to 15 times what my other books are doing. It seems the interest in ghosts has escalated!

So, my dilemma? Should I stick with what I know, or with what is working?

:?

With the amount of ghost related shows on tv and movies like Paranormal Activity doing big business, I think it would be unwise not to capitalize on what people are into at this point. I say keep putting out ghost story collections from your state (I'm assuming these are tellings of local legends and such), but use the success you say this brings you to try and sell what you really want to write. To focus solely on what you want to write or what's working exclusively might bring you contentment (with less money) or more money (with maybe less contentment), but I don't think it'll bring you both. Maybe alternate what you put out, and use the ghost books to try and get new readers to your other books.

Just my two cents.
