- A Message From Don D'Auria at Dorchester Publishing
All I did was express my opinion, which I am allowed to do, whether anyone finds it justified or not. Most others have done the same on this thread. I haven't agreed with everything said, as some haven't agreed with me. That's why they're opinions.
Leisure did several wonderful things. They gave us two horror novels a month. They made me a fan of Brian, Gord, John Everson and James Moore. They made many of us Richard Laymon fans by reprinting his novels in an affordable package. And, most importantly to me, I met several of the people here on the old Leisure board, and they became my friends.
Because of these things, I am greatly saddened at what's happened. But I will continue to support, to the best of my ability, the works of the authors who are affected by these events.
I, too, am dismayed that Don and Leah, among many others at Dorchester, have lost their jobs. I hope they all are able to find new employment. I hope Don and Leah are able to bring us quality horror novels wherever they land.
I think it was Funland by Richard Laymon and Valley of the Scarecrow that we were supposed to get. Damn them. I was so looking forward to both.
The funny thing is, is that when I paid my invoice, I had asked about future books, and the lady said over the phone that "The August books are still scheduled for the book club, as well as normal publication. It's afterwards that they'll restructure everything."
I think Brian is one of the smartest guys in the industry. Very, very rarely have I seen any of his predictions not come to pass. What really sucks about this decision is that only has Leisure lost good writers and two awesome staff members (according to the authors), but they're going to lose customers left and right. If I had the money to start a press, I would hire Don in a heartbeat because in doing so I know I would have a dozen writers (if not more) who would follow. I've rarely heard of an editor who has such a fan base.

Let me add my best wishes for Don, who was/is a joy to work with and who brought SANTA STEPS OUT, unchanged mind you, into mass market in 2000. Eternal gratitude, Don! As you regroup, please find an eventual way to keep in touch with all of us.

Goddamn...I was away for three weeks and I came back to this. I don't even know what to say except there is this empty pit in my stomach and I feel like screaming.

After digesting it for a bit and reading all the strings of posts, I have come to the conclusion that there really is no reason for me to continue to be a Book Club Member. I am not sure if there even still is one, given the dismissal of Don and Leah. I am assuming in judging from their communications (which seem quite shady), there is going to be no horror line from Leisure any longer. Regardless, I am still calling them after work and cancelling my membership. I will likely keep getting voice mails, but I am still going to try.
I own a kindle, so if the releases remain constant, I will just be purchasing digital copies online. The advantages of me being in the Club, was that even with shipping costs, the price was equal to buying them from a chain bookstore. However, I received them much earlier which was a big plus. With the heavyweight authors busting out quicker than flies on a log of shit that is about to be stepped on, and being able to get them just as quickly online, au revoir Leisure Club.
Foremost, I must say that Don D’Auria was the best editor I’ve ever had in 28 years of professional writing; he was also a terrific friend. I couldn’t be more disheartened by his separation from Leisure, nor could I be more grateful to Don for all he did for me. In general, I feel that he provided more opportunities for more horror writers than any other editor in recent times, if not ever. It is impossible for me to render sufficient thanks for all of his efforts and confidence that contributed so much to my well-being and creative jubilation. Don, more than any other person in the field, made my occupational comes true.
Don--and Leah, too--of course, have always been formidable entities in the publishing world. Their competence, insight, and creativity is well-known (not to mention that they’re purely and simply GREAT folks.) I have every confidence that they will both land solidly elsewhere in the business, and to them I offer my most sincere best wishes.
Wow, I haven't been on the boards for awhile. Looks like all hell's been breaking loose. Glad Leah got a job but I was bummed when I clicked on the link and read, "She specialized in acquiring and editing romance fiction, westerns, and other mass market originals" while at Dorchester. Will Horror ever NOT be considered a dirty word? Anyways, hope that Don and all the authors he's helped find a paycheck else where. I have a free kindle on my macbook that I've never used so maybe I'll have to figure out how to use it. Oh, does anyone know why Amazon is still listing Lucifer's Lottery as a paperback back release for this month? From everything I've read here, it's not gonna happen.
Funland, Lucifer's Lottery, Valley of the Scarecrow, etc. are still listed on Amazon as "to be published". Even Richard Laymon's "Quake" was scheduled for a March 2011 release. I guess that's out of the question as well. I went ahead and ordered previous editions of Funland and Quake, since I was looking forward to those releases. The others, I guess we have to wait and see what happens.
It usually takes awhile for the Amazon database to come up to speed with changes to publishing schedules. Sometimes it never does, frankly. Last time I checked, one of my titles was "Out of Print", and had been since the day of publication.
Always trust the dates on the publishers' site if they don't correspond with Amazon's.
