It's so cold here, that I'm seriously thinking of freezing myself so I can be thawed out and studied at a much later date in time.
This cold should be charged with crimes against humanity.
Oh well, another night of candles and ball warmers.

Last night we were in bed and heard a WUMP kind of noise and the bedroom door shook. (It was closed) I said what was that and Mark got up and all the closet doors in the hallway were wide open. Oh well, I guess we pissed off our ghost in some way. It has been a while since the doors opened. |

Downing loading books, music or movies that you have not paid for is stealing. I don't care how you want to pretty it up. I'm so tired of dealing with people who think it is OK to download content and not pay for it because "XXX is already rich and they won't miss my $X" I guess it would be OK for me to go into their homes and steal one of their electronic devices because, well hey, they've got more than one. They can stream music on their phones, why do they need an iPod and since they have smart phones do they really need that pesky computer too? |

I got an email last year from the principal of an elementary school in British Columbia, Canada, in which he apologized for one of his teachers stealing an ink drawing I had done for MY kids' school - Guth Elementary School - a cartoon alligator peeking through a big "G" for the Guth Gators. It was printed on all their tee-shirts, hoodies, etc. This Canadian school also began with the letter "G", and their mascot was also a gator, so.... Anyway, my image, copied perfectly, was already painted on their school wall, printed on all the tee-shirts, water bottles, frisbees, you name it, so, what could he do to make it up to me? Send me some swag, I replied, and no hard feelings. I wouldn't want to be in that teacher's shoes, though. And thanks for the kind words, Jazminsdaddy! |

I went my son's school last night. They invite a children's author to read some stories and promote literacy. The author told a story, to a bunch of kids aged 4-8, about how one evening he was at home watching TV when he heard a knock on the door. He opened the door to see a black leather bag. In the black leather bag was the head of a wolf, with the eyes, fur, ears and everything, that someone had apparently left as a practical joke. Rather than be horrified and call the police, the children's author was quite happy with the "gift." He boiled the head in a pot to "get all the meat off," bleached the bones and then proudly displayed his wolf's head to the kids. |

I liked the long rant, you should have left it in. I've always thought (as my Mom and Stepdad taught me) that you should earn your paycheck. Too many people, especially at my job, have this view that they deserve their paycheck because they show up. If you're not going to do your job, get the hell out and let someone who's actually willing to work come in and show what they can do. Lowe's is so top-heavy, both corporate and in-store, that it gets incredibly frustrating, especially when corporate states that they don't want department managers or sales specialists doing actual work. Their jobs are to manage and to sell, respectively. Out of approximately 175 people in our store, that leaves maybe 35-40 people to do all the actual work (excluding cashiers). It feeds into the "too many chiefs, not enough indians" saying. I've got stories, just from my store, that would piss you off to no end. It's incredible the lack of accountability there. The best thing I ever heard from a manager somewhere is when I helped Sportmart open their first Columbus store. (They were based in Chicago.) They sent about five managers from their Chicago stores to work and the very first thing they told us in our orientation--"We will not ask you to do anything we wouldn't do ourselves. And if you run into problems, like angry customers, call us immediately and we'll take care of it. That's what we're paid to do." I've always remembered that. I hate being in retail. Come on, lottery numbers! |

So sorry you're having to go through this, Thad. It's intellectually and emotionally frustrating when you can see what needs to be done and yet no one else is on board. The thing is, after a few years of it, you tend to think it's the norm until that rare occasion when you land a job at a place where everyone is friendly, supportive, and pulls their own weight. And then it's like "OMG, why wasn't it always like this!" and you don't know whether to laugh or cry. Chris! What did the kids think? |
