Books read and recommended for September, 2016. Hard cover - 1. Savages by Greg F. Gifune from Sinister Grin Press. Page-turning horrific thriller set on an island. Who will survive this war-created horror. Good one. 2. Man With No Name by Laird Barron from JournalStone. Another impeccably constructed Barron horror story. Go get some. 3. Unsafe Spaces by Brian Keene from Thunderstorm Books. A heart-warming, heart-rending compendium of life and wisdom from a very good writer. 4. Borderlands 6 edited by Olivia F. & Thomas F. Monteleone from Borderlands Press. Excellent anthology. 5. Bully by J. F. Gonzalez from Thunderstorm Books. I love Jesus writing. Get down dirty and gritty and realistic enough to have the horror and love stick with you. 6. Back From the Dead by J. F. Gonzalez from Thunderstorm Books. Another fine addition to the Gonzalez legacy. 7. Eerie Volume 21 from Dark Horse. Another fine anthology. Love these reprints. 8. Castle of Sorrows by Jonathan Janz. Serial killers, an island with a monster, a castle, love, death, and tons of horrific thrills are found here. Could have used some more suspense and maybe a couple fewer characters but this is a good read. 9. M. I. A. Hunter by Joe R. Lansdale from Subterranean Press. Three short novels of M. I. A./P.O.W. rescues in Viet Nam. Great action and good characters. 10. Corpse Rider by Tim Curran from DarkFuse. Curran knows how to gross you out and yet feel for the poor souls he ruins. Paperback - 11. Peel Back the Skin edited by Anthony Rivera and Sharon Lawson from Grey Matter Press. Consistently good anthology with many monsters but not what you may expect. 12. The Scent of Hope by Ryan C. Thomas from Grand Mal Press. If you like dogs…. Good survival story. Digital - 13. Cult of Kill, #1 by Patrick Kill from DarkFuse. I like this gross horror. 14. What Lives in the Trees by Tim Curran from DarkFuse. Fun big-foot type hunt in your own yard. Ended a bit abruptly though. 15. Eat the Night by Tim Waggoner from DarkFuse. This sci-fi/horror mishmash doesn’t hold up. Too many unanswered/unexplained entities and things. Not much suspense and really didn’t care what happened to the characters. Favorites = #1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13. Support Indie Publishers and Enjoy. |

Recently finished Needful Things by Stephen King. I enjoyed this novel far more than I thought I would. Absolutely had a blast reading it. Now reading The Obsidian Chamber, the newest Pendergast novel from Preston & Child. |
