Books read and recommended for October, 2014.
Hard cover -
1. Twelve Gauge by Ronald Kelly from Thunderstorm Books. Another fine work from Kelly. Supernatural events make this serial killer novel very intriguing.
2. Black Hat Jack by Joe R. Lansdale from Subterranean Press. Cowboys, pioneers and indians in the old West done as only Lansdale can. It’s a blast.
3. Ghosts of Eden by Keith Deininger from DarkFuse. This was hard to finish. Nothing compelling in plot or characterization. (digital only so far)
4. In the Shadows of Children by Alan Ryker from DarkFuse. The bogeyman is coming. Protect your child from your past. (digital only so far)
5. DarkFuse, Volume 2 edited by Shane Staley from DarkFuse. Six good horror shorts with satisfying endings.
6. Deathbringer by Bryan Smith from Thunderstorm Books. Crazy Smith ride to hell and back. A real blast, action-filled page-turner.
7. Birdbox by Michael Louis Calvillo from Bad Moon Books. A slow build to a page-turner. A family fights for their lives but what is their ancient enemy? One of the best novels of the year.
8. By Insanity of Reason by Lisa Morton and John R. Little from Bad Moon Books. Messes with your mind. Who is the murderer? Good stuff.
9. Angel Board by Kristopher Rufty from Thunderstorm Books. Character-driven novel where a guardian angel may not be what you were counting on.
10. A Shrill Keening by Ronald Malfi from DarkFuse. Godzilla is a wuss. Cthulhu rises or is it only a man’s insanity? (digital only so far)

Paperback -
11. The Family Tree by John Everson. Enthralling family. Felt like I was at the Inn. Predictable but creepy and with enough twists to keep me reading.
12. Like Thunder by Nate Southard fro Thunderstorm Books. Good novella from Southard. Drugs, sex, guns and thugs. You never know who your friends are.
13. Siege of Station 19 by Raegan Butcher from Necro. Non-stop murderous creatures action.

Digital -
14. Mister Glow-Bones and Other Halloween Tales by Ronald Kelly from Macabre Ink. Good collection of scary stories.

Other -
15. No Songs for the Stars by Mary SanGiovanni from White Noise Press. Gorgeous production and a fine story.

Favorites = #1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14 and 15.

Post subject:  Re: What is everyone reading?

I finally finished Blood Paternal : The Origins of Blood today. What a great read. Well done, Janet Joyce Holden. :v

I wanted to keep up reading the Horror World Forum writers, but I believe I've run out of what I have on hand. I bought a copy of Blood Red to go along with my copy of Blood Harvest, and I can never get enough Halloween, so I'll probably start reading it next. and technically James A. Moore has been on here, so....

Post subject:  Re: What is everyone reading?

Books read and recommended for November, 2014.
Hard cover -
1. Reign of Evil: A Seal Team 666 Novel by Weston Ochse from Thomas Dunne. Ochse scores with another supernatural military horror thriller for Seal Team 666 but the characters are what makes this special.
2. Vampirella Archives: Volume Ten from Dark Horse. Good stories and art.
3. The Oak by Shane McKenzie from Sideshow Press. Wouldn’t want to visit this house, not even the neighborhood. Flies, maggots and clowns - oh my.
4. Shifting of Veils by Tim Lebbon from PS Publishing. Conclusion to the Apocalypse Trilogy. Excellent prose with great characterization make a great finish.
5. A Little Orange Book of Ornery Stories by Ed Gorman from Borderlands. Excellent collection of well crafted stories.
6. Creepy Archives: Volume Twenty from Dark Horse. Good stuff.
7. Angel of the Abyss by Ed Kurtz from DarkFuse. Well written. Good characters. A bit weak on thrills and suspense. (digital only so far)
8. Mr. Mercedes by Stephen King from Scribner. Mystery crime serial murderer thriller in King’s great style.
9. Jackpot by Shane McKenzie, Adam Cesare, David Bernstein and Kristopher Rufty from Sinister Grin Press. Page-turning serial killer gore-horror with some great twists and turns and unforgettable characters.
10. Oasis of the Damned by Greg F. Gifune from DarkFuse. Well done survival story of war, creatures and living with loss. (digital only so far)
11. Facial by Jeff Strand from DarkFuse. Funny fantasy horror with Strand at his usual goodness. (digital only so far)
12. Eerie Archives Volume Seventeen from Dark Horse. Another good one.
13. The Halloween Children by Brian James Freeman and Norman Prentiss from Earthling. Well written scary stuff. Halloween is for the children and they are ready.

Paperback -
14. Wolf Hunt 2 by Jeff Strand from Dark Regions Press. One if Strand’s best novels. It’s like a couple of Andrew Mayhem sidekicks, some bad guys and werewolves face off. Cool, horrific and funny. I’m ready for #3.

Digital -
15. Bad Apples: Five Slices of Halloween Horror by Edward Lorn, Jason Parent, Evans Light. Adam Light and Gregor Xane from Corpus Press. Lorn = another well done story. Halloween and corn fields will never seem safe again.
16. Cruelty: Episode Six by Edward Lorn. A twisted nightmare family come to life. Another excellent episode. Bring on #7.
17. Tortured Souls by Clive Barker from Subterranean Press. Stiff prose. Not much to recall.
18. Fog Warning by Edward Lorn. Well done serial killers and supernatural fog.
19. Prisoner 489 by Joe R. Lansdale (Black Labyrinth II) from Dark Regions Press. A golem, a prison island and some workers have an adventure as only The Master can detail.
20. No Such Thing by Edward Lorn. Excellent horror story.
21. Ghost Heart by Weston Ochse and Yvonne Navaro from Dark Regions Press. Not my fav Ochse but a good one. Complex novel.
22. DoubleDown V: Secrets by John R. Little and Outcast by Mark Allan Gunnells from JournalStone. Secrets - page-turning heartfelt story of love, death and time that stops for a couple people. Great characters and plot but the ending just killed me. Want more. Outcast - another emotional story of witches, love and loss. Good stuff.
23. Cruelty: Episode Seven by Edward Lorn. A twisted nightmare family come to life. Another excellent episode getting creepier than ever. Bring on #8.

Favorites = #1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 18, 19, 20, 22 and 23.

Stumbled upon a book I'd never seen before at the library - Krampus: The Yule Lord by Brom. Having read and enjoyed all his other books, I immediately checked this one out. About 1/3 of the way through, and I'm really digging it.

I did not start Only the Red is Blood by Janet Joyce Holden as planned. Some stuff happened. I did however have a chance the other day to read a short story from someone here, from his Apathetic Flesh collection, named Darren O' Godfrey. The story I picked was Clam Bake at Opaque Lake. That was a fun little read. I look forward to reading more and I'll get started , soon I hope, on Only the Red is Blood by Janet Joyce Holden. It's been too long for me and a good book to get acquainted.

Post subject:  Re: What is everyone reading?

With my shift from working overnights to days, my reading time has halted to almost nothing. I get up at 4:30 a.m., work from 6:00-2:45, then come home and see my family (which is great, and something i really missed working nights), and by the time all the kids are in bed at 9:30, I'm so exhausted I end up going right to bed as well.

Post subject:  Re: What is everyone reading?

Books read and recommended for December, 2014.
Hard cover -
1. Fear City by F. Paul Wilson from Gauntlet. Wilson is a master. Great finish to the Repairman Jack series.
2. Blockbuster by Lisa von Biela from DarkFuse. Excellent medical horror thriller with good characters and a fine ending. (digital only so far)
3. Apocrypha by Brian Keene from Thunderstorm Books. A fitting end to OF KEENE INTEREST. And it’s a page turner. Especially love all of Brian’s commentary.
4. People are Strange by James Newman from ThunderStorm Books. Newman pulls you in and keeps you there.
5. Hitchers by P. A. Douglas from ThunderStorm Books. Great story and characters with good pacing in this Lovecraft inspired novel.
6. The God Beneath My Garden by Robert Ford from ThunderStorm Books. Emotional, gut-wrenching, heart-felt stories are common here. Very well done collection.

Paperback -
7. DarkNet by John R. Little from Journalstone. A family with dark secrets and the DarkNet. A plot-twisting crime horror mystery that grabs you and won’t let go. One of the best novels of the year.
8. Dastardly Bastard by Edward Lorn from Red Adept. This was a tough read. Seemed to skip around too much and couldn’t figure out what was going on for way too long.
9. The Lost Level by Brian Keene from Apex. What a pulp blast this is. Feels like you are there. Great start to the Labyrinth series.
10. Life After Dane by Edward Lorn from Red Adept Publishing. Begins at the end of a serial killers life and becomes increasingly horrific as there story unfolds. Highly recommended.

Digital -
11. Cruelty: Episode Eight by Edward Lorn. A twisted nightmare family come to life. Another excellent episode getting creepier than ever. Bring on #9.
12. Infernal Night: Michael Quinn vs. Repairman Jack by Heather Graham and F. Paul Wilson. A quick, fun read.

Other -
13. Splatterpunk #6 edited by Jack Bantry. Another fine issue with this one dedicated to J. F. Gonzalez.

Favorites = #1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11 and 13.

You know how with some books, you know they're long and you realize they're going to be a time investment, but because they're good, you don't mind settling in and enjoying the ride?

That's Phil Rickman's CURFEW. I've been reading this for the better part of a month, and though I've been reading and re-reading some other things too, much of my time has been spent on this novel. Some of you have probably read it, but if you haven't, I strongly recommend it. Great stuff.
