The first chapter is only 5 pages long. But dear baby zombie cheesus is it dry and boring. How can you take such an interesting subject and make it so painfully hard to read?

Just finished reading " Carousel " excellent book. I really enjoyed it and would highly recommend it. Currently reading John Lott's book on gun control.

I'm part way through On The Road, and wow - the first time I read this, it was years and years ago and I had no idea I'd ever be living in California and so the things Kerouac describes about Los Angeles, Hollywood and the central valley and farming country, I just had to take as read. And now I've seen it and lived it and traveled through it... its like someone's papered over everything, but if you scrape away the layers, the So Cal of 1947 is still there - folk scratching a living up in the central valley; the trains; L.A. depicted as a cold, hard, unfriendly place. Nothing's gone. It's still there.
"Black and Blue" a DI Rebus novel, by Ian Rankin. I am in the process of reading all of Rankin's "Rebus" novels, with Ken Stott firmly in my mind's eye as John Rebus.

I re-read Kickers a few years back and, yes, it was shit. DP7 and Psi-Force were my favorites but, really, the entire line holds a special place in my heart and I'm all over anything that has anything to do with the New Universe.
But, reading them now, these old issues . . . holy crap, that's a lot of words. And I had forgotten Marvel's habit of recapping every single past issue all over again in every new issue by having the characters talk about everything that's gone on before, like it's the most natural thing in the world.

I read it about twenty years ago. I remember being haunted by the ending.
I am reading IT now for the first time. It's amazing about 300 pages in.

IT is one of the few books to scare me. Just one small scene, only a particular image, but it's stayed with me. That was the first book I can remember cancelling everything to finish. Skipped school one day and read the last 100 pages.

I agree about IT. I was reading it late last night after everyone had gone to bed and after putting the book down I had the willies. And even if a particular scene doesn't scare me I completely understand the characters being scared shitless. Few authors can write the emotions and actions around being scared like King.

We all float down here... always sticks with me. I remember being frightened of those drains, although I never really 'got' why they could be so scary in reality. Back home, all our drains were set flat in the ground at the side of the road, 18" by 12" or thereabouts, and were covered by a thick metal grid. You could lose you keys, your wallet, I suspect a lot of dead pet hamsters and budgies were dropped down there, but nothing bigger than that.
And damn it all, one of the first things I saw when I came over here - one of those long slit drains, set in the curb. "Drains To The Beach" stenciled alongside it. Easy enough to lose a kid down there, and all I could think of was that freakin' clown. Still do. Every time it rains and I see water pouring down those holes.
Edited to add - awww crap I hope that wasn't a spoiler. I only just spotted 'first time'. Sorry, Chris.

Over the past few months I've been reading the trade paperback collections of DC's New 52 as my library has gotten them. There are a few interesting books but, for the most part, they suck. DC was better off working around it's convoluted history rather than trying this crap. Feel myself swinging firmly back into the Marvel camp again. Rereading Bendis' New Avengers and then maybe Brubaker's Captain America.

John Constantine is a member of....Justice League Dark.
I'll be so happy if they end this charade now and go back to what they were doing before the New 52. It saddens me what they've done to some of these characters.

I'm bouncing back and forth between Keene's Ghost Walk and The Terror by Dan Simmons. They're very different books, but both are proving great reads. With Ghost Walk, it's all about characterization--particularly Levi Stoltzfus, a character I love. With The Terror the star is the atmosphere of dread on and around the ship. At least for me...
