Laurel, I saw that yesterday and for the first got a good laugh from that strip.
On the subject of graphic novels, a friend got me the first issue of Dark Delicacies comic. Glossy pages and very solid art, it is based on the long running horror anthology by Del Howison and Jeff Gelb. The first issue had stories by F. Paul Wilson and Joe Lansdale. Wilson's graphic treatment was quite good. The Lansdale story, while the art was very enjoyable, lacked what the written word had to offer and that was blistering suspense and tension. The whole thing was wrapped in a stunning cover. Not a bad little debut and something I'd certainly consider for future issues....
I ordered one by mistake. I didn't realize it was a graphic novel until it came in. It's called Welcome To Hoxford, and while I don't think I would ever intentionally order another one, I did enjoy this one.
My biggest complaint is that you spend $ 15.00 and it only takes you less than 1/2 hour to read it. I'll take Heavy Metal Magazine anyday, it's cheaper and there are more stories in it. I guess I'm just not someone who likes to stare at animation art.

I'm a big fan. Yes, they can be expensive, but often you get a hell of a story that's as solid as a novel but backed up with brilliant artwork and narrative devices specific to the form. Hell, it'll take you a lot longer than a 1/2 hour to read WATCHMEN. Other favorites include Ed Brubakers intense noir/crime series CRIMINAL and SLEEPER, Miller's SIN CITY, Mignola's HELLBOY, and Ellis' PLANETARY.

I first got hooked on the graphic novel format when Clive Barker's works started getting the graphic treatment. Anyone who has seen the stunning Books of Blood series by Epic or Son of Celluloid will understand. And Tony, while Heavy Metal does have more stories, the basic magazine I remember from my youth had far too many serialized stories so it became frustrating if I missed an issue. Heavy metal later wised up and began featuring complete stories in quarterly issues. As a kid, many graphic works I collected eventually made it to film. Watchmen, was a prime example. And for those who think superheroes are just for kids, two graphic novels really stood out. One was Starlin's haunting 'The Death of Captain Marvel'. The other was a spiderman story illustrated by fantasy artist extraordinaire Charles Vess. Even now, the Book Baltimore which I am currently reading has drawings rendered by Mike Mignola.....
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but I think that only applies when you are looking at one picture rather than a hundred of them. I find myself following along with the panels as the story unfolds and not really pausing to look at the art, I guess its the story that interests me more.
Maybe my mind is wired differently than others who enjoy graphic novels. I get more pleasure from reading the words in a story than seeing it rendered graphically. When I read a novel my mind imagines a scene with real people. With real people I can put myself in thier shoes, feel what they are feeling, and be part of the story. With an artistic depiction of a scene, I lose that realism. I may enjoy a character in a graphic story, but I don't imagine what its like to be in that story. Like I said, maybe its me.
When I watch movies, I can put myself into a horror movie with no problem, but I have a hard time imagining myself in a Spiderman movie or a Hulk movie. Now I enjoy comic book movies alot, don't get me wrong. But when they are over, I don't think about what I would have done if I were Spiderman.

Pick up the first volume of Garth Ennis's multi-volume graphic novel, PREACHER, and chew into that.
Read it through.
Try and stop.
Then, once you've chewed through the rest of the series, pick up the first volume of Neil Gaiman's SANDMAN.
Read it through.
Try and stop.
I am a big-time graphic novel fan - but it needs to be the good shit. There is an awful lot of bad shit out there, but take it from me - either of these two graphic novel series are well worth the investment. I have read both series more than several times over.
