I occasionally stop by his board and I just got done reading the posts on a chat he did a week ago (I think). I was amazed. He is talking about taking a job teaching because he needs the money!
I was blown away by that. I just assumed he was one of the top selling authors out there and that he would be pretty comfortable. I guess either sales or down, or he just doesn't make as much money as I thought someone as succesfull as him would be making. Regardless, I wish Brian all the luck in the world, its no fun trying to pay your bills and the money isn't there. The guy is so freaking talented, and thankfully so prolific, his having to teach to pay the bills is just so wrong to me.
He talked about a whole bunch of other stuff that I found interesting also, including e publishing, self publishing, and his future involvement with the small press. He also talked about his Ed Lee homage coming out soon (Castaway's was his Laymon tribute).
Once again that website is: http://www.briankeene.com/forum/index.php or you can look up top of this screen where it says Mass Market Message Boards, click on it, and then click on the Brian Keene site. You do have to be accepted so it might take a day or so for you to be notified.
I read that too. I took 4 semesters worth of writing workshop classes at UMKC (University of Missouri-Kansas City), and while I was lucky enough to have a couple pretty cool professors, it would have been so amazing to get to do one of those classes with Brian. I hope the good folks in that area take advantage of the opportunity.

Not surprising. I imagine his yearly income is relative to most Americans; probably between the $40–$60K range. Seems like enough, but like successful musicians, that success comes at a price. So you can shave a good $10–$20K right off the top of that (conventions, traveling, hotels, promotion, and all those other things publishers don't pay for).
Mid-level success in any art or entertainment field can still be a struggle. Health insurance, for instance, can cost hundreds of dollars a month. Keene is at the top of that mid-level list of authors, but I'd bet he's still living the equivalent of someone living by a week-to-week paycheck.
And it may get tougher, now that e-books are becoming more popular. Sadly, books and stories will slowly become the next MP3. And countless "fans" steal music because they think bands that achieve any measure of success won't miss the money CD sales would generate. Many of those very same people read, I'm sure. So it'll become increasingly tougher for authors to make a living solely off of their writing.

yeah i'm surprised but not shocked by this. i recall reading an article which postulated that writing may return to a man of leisure's occupation with a few trends (death of publishing, rise of print of demand, piracy of ebooks though i don't think this is really a concern until something like the kindle hits mass market prices) and such. it was of course, an idle, but a more serious look at trends may reveal that this won't be that uncommon, especially for writers of "genre" fiction.
Thanks for the concern, TT (and everyone else) but I'm fine. Yes, the economy is hitting me hard, just like it is hitting everyone else I know hard, but the financial concerns have more to do with getting a head start on my one-year old's college fund and all of the usual fears that come with middle age (retirement fund, etc). In this occupation, you don't get a 401K, so you have to plan ahead. Unfortunately, planning ahead requires a good chunk of change.
So, no worries. I'll keep writing them if you'll keep reading them.
