Question For Those Who Read Fiction Mags

Most of us read magazines like Cemetery Dance and whatnot. So I have a question. Most of these magazines are quarterly publications that rarely come out quarterly. Usually this doesn't seem to be for lack of quality fiction. It's usually a money issue, printing problems, artwork, something going on in the publisher's personal life (and not to mention some simply lazy, unprofessional sorts behind the wheel).
But my question regards the fiction. If a publication put out that they're going to miss a quarterly deadline due to lack of quality material, would you be more or less forgiving? Or should that publication lower its standards a bit to accommodate open slots.
I'm asking, obviously, because of Shock Totem. Issue one is filled and complete (and it's fantastic). We have two stories for issue two so far. But what if, when October approaches, we're still lacking in the fiction department? Do we hold off or what? I say we hold off. I think publishing stories that we really dig will be best for us and our readers. If we publish things we're less than ecstatic about, our readers will know, and it'll wear on us. I think this is all fairly standard. And I'm talking about as a team. There's one thing in issue one that I don't like at all, but everyone else did. In general, though, no more than one person wasn't on board for every piece, and most got a thumbs-up all around. I like this approach best, but is it the best?
What are your thoughts on this potential issue?
Thanks, Ken

With all the submissions you receive, you are lacking for quality material? How many stories are in every issue?
In my mind, whenever I read one of the mag's you've mentioned it a good bet that I will enjoy less than 50% of the fiction. And this includes stories written by popular authors. I would rather read a story that capture's my imagination, grosses me out, or scares me rather than one that was written perfectly or written by a popular author and bored me to death.
And my feelings on putting it out on time....I am so tired of mag's not delievering when they say they will. If I paid for a subscription and its released quarterly, release the darn thing quarterly! I can understand it being a little late, but if you promise 4 mags a year, then do what you promised.
I know, with small presses I'm dreaming that would ever happen. I love them all, Shroud, C.D., Dark Discoveries, et all, but it would be nice if they came on time and weren't a pleasent surprise when they showed up on my doorstep.
I agree with TT. Release on time. I get so frustrated with CD and their crazy delivery schedule but am a lifetime subscriber so it all works out in the end. That being said, I ordered a year subscription to grave tales about 4-5 years ago (I think) and still have not gotten all of the issues.
I also enjoy less than 50% of material in the magazines.

I also say release it on time. Just remember that taste is subjective. The 50% Tt likes and the 50% Java likes might be a different group of stories. I would maybe broaden yourselves to seriously look at stories that maybe a small group of you don't like, but challenge you as readers.
This also strengthens my resolve to come up with something to submit. Someday...
