A Coven of Vampires
One author who does not get much mention here on the good ol' horror board is one of my long time favorites, Brian Lumley. I first discovered him through his Vampire World trilogy and have since gone back and read every title in the Necroscope series. A former military man, Lumley mixes vampires and espionage to make for some damn fine reading.
Well, I purchased last week the trade paperback called a Coven of Vampires by Lumley which reprints an early collection of horror tales (most having nothing to do with vampires) and I have to say, it rocks. Some stories are a good two decades old and they hold the test of time. Well worth reading for anyone who has never tried Lumley to give you a taste of his style.

I always thought Lumley's Necroscopse series was excellent. I had all mine ripped off when I lent them to someone years ago, who then moved without giving me my damned books back.
Anyway, I just started grabbing copies of the Necroscope series not too long ago, and I plan on reading them over again, because it's been a while.
What I really need to do, is grab one of Lumley's short story collections; I've been wanting to read his short stuff for too long now.

I have a lot of his stuff. His short stories are pretty good. If you can find it, grab THE TAINT AND OTHER NOVELLAS (I kid you not, that is the title) it has a couple of stories that are extremely hard to find.
I quit reading the Necroscope stuff after the first book in the E-Branch trilogy. It just got too much!!! Especially with the exclamation points!!! Every! Single! Sentence!

Rick Hautala is another author I remember who's been accused of exploiting the exclamation point. I didn't think much of reading that at the time, then late last year I read Moon Walker, and found that he did use it way too much. Since then I think he came out with a revised edition with a lot of them removed.
I can block errors like that out of my mind if it's a good writer, and a good story, but I can see where it can get to you after awhile.

Lumley is very much an original, bringing a much-needed unique spin on the modern vampire novel. I've read the first 6 Necroscope books and liked them, but haven't read the others. I dunno. Seems to me like he might've been stretching out the whole son of Harry Keogh thing a little bit, but that's just me.
What I noticed was the progression of his writing. The first Necroscope pales in writing quality to his later stuff. Not to say the early works were poorly done, because they were still good, but his style showed tremendous growth and maturity.
...now I must find the Taint. I have bought every Lumley work I have ever found, but it may indeed be time to seek out the rare stuff.
