I'm so sorry, Nanci. We've been through it, and it's very painful. It's no different than losing a family member. But you gave her a long life and a lot of love, there's comfort in that.

Terribly sorry, Nanci. I had to put down my 19-year-old Siamese a few years back. It was such a hard thing to do. I'd had him since 1986.
A word of advice. If it gets to the point where putting her down is the only option, if she's suffering, make the sure the vet finds a vein somewhere. If they cannot, and say they have to inject her in the heart, please, for your own good, say your goodbyes and leave the room before they do it.
I know that's probably not something you want to think about, but it's something I went through and was quite possibly the worst experience of my life. I can't think of anything worse, and I imagine it'll haunt me forever. You just do not want to witness it. Trust me.
I am so sorry, though.

Ahhh crap I am so very sorry. Losing a pet is so freaking hard. They are like our children. I am so sorry.
I hope that she passes softly at home.
I have to second the not be in the room thing. The memory will never leave me as long as I live. yet, I guess I would do it again.... I have to they love me and I could do no less. So never mind about my room comment. Do what your heart tells you.

Oh man, I'm really sorry, Nanci.
Although I've only had three awesome cats in my entire life, each one was like a little brother or sister to me when I was growing up. I LOVE all cats, and have always thought them to be the most magical creatures on the face of the earth. Anyone who knows me, knows that I would defend a cat with my life if I had to: they're that special to me.
This may seem like a weird statement, but I know you're a fellow Bradbury lover, and when ever I think about the three cats I had and miss them now, I always think about how Ray Bradbury loves cats so much and I read one of his stories. Sounds weird, but it always makes me feel better.
Just think of all the cool times you guys had and that suffering isn't an option with someone you love.
Hang in there, Nanci.

Nanci, if I may ask, do you get the feeling from your cat that it knows it doesn't have much time left?
I had a Coon cat for almost 17 years and it was the meanest cat I had ever encounted anywhere. He would swipe his paws at you when ever you walked next to him, scare the crap out of my kids, fly from your arms when you held him...he pretty much avoided all contact with people unless he was hungry or wanted you to get out of his way. Needless to say he was king of the yard all the other cats in the neighborhood stayed away from him also.
One evening I was sitting on the couch and to my amazement, he slowly, and I mean slowly, walked up to me, jumped on the couch, and then taking some tiny steps he stood on my legs and made eye contact with me. He looked at me for a minute with half closed eyes, then he circled once and then laid down on my lap. He had NEVER done this in the whole 17 years I had him. He let me pet him and he stayed there for almost an hour until I got up. No one in the house could believe it. I was almost afraid to get up to tell you the truth. After that he wanted to go out for night as he did every evening and we let him out.
The next morning we found him outside near the front door, he had passed away.
I always wondered if he knew what was going to happen, what I mean is, that maybe he had a sense that something was wrong and he didn't know what to do about it. That coming to me and falling asleep on my lap was some kind of reassurence for him. I was almost tempted to think it was his way of saying sorry for all the scratches he gave me over the years and for the terror he caused the kids, but knowing him, I dismissed it.
As mean as that cat was, I loved the heck out of him. You always knew where he stood, you always knew what he wanted, and he was the best mouser I ever had. That cat owned the house and he knew it. I miss him to this day.

Damn, taking a faithful companion to the vets for the last time was one of the hardest experiences I've ever had to endure. My thoughts are with you Nancy.

Tt, I definitely believe animals know when something serious is going on. The first cat I had when I was a kid developed some kind of miserable cancer, and on the way to the vet when we had to have him put to sleep, that cat looked right in my eyes the entire way there, and to this day I'll never forget the look in his eyes.
This cat had human-like eyes anyway, like a person was trapped inside of him, and that look still haunts me, like he was saying, "Why is this happening to me?"

Nanci.. I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I too recently lost a dear friend - my teacup Yorkie who had a rough last few months and finally passed from a "status" seizure. This happened over a year ago and its still a raw subject. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Weirdness - since Sunday I keep thinking I see a white cat out of the corner of my eye. At first I thought it was Mulder because he's a tabby and mostly white. The first time it happened, I thought I saw a cat run by and into the office. I thought Mulder saw something outside and went to calm him down but he wasn't in there. He was asleep on the bed in our room. Twice yesterday I saw the same thing.
I have a bad feeling that it won't be long now. I know this sounds crazy but I wonder if what I'm seeing is a 'spirit guide' for Mutton.
Poor little girl - she's so frail. I really do hope she just goes to sleep and we don't have to take her back to the vet.

Heartfelt condolences, man. We have 3 pets, 2 cats and a dog, who is 13 and just had surgery on her butt to remove a fatty tumor. My wife and I have both had cats that passed away from age or cancer and it is very very tough. Hell, they are like children.
Nanci, sorry to hear. We may not always show it, often taking pets for granted but they are so integral to the cohesive family units we all create. My mother had a cat that looked just like yours and when her time came, my mother could barely function. It is indeed a loss and like any member of the family, their presence will be sorely missed. My condolences.....
